The supply order was formally handed over to Tata Advanced Systems in a ceremony held in the national capital. Under the agreement, the company will support the Indian Army’s 510 Advance Base Workshop (ABW) in upgrading in-service Pinaka systems to ensure sustained availability, reliability, and peak battlefield performance.

Phased Overhaul Programme

In the initial phase, Tata Advanced Systems and 510 ABW will jointly undertake a pilot overhaul of select Pinaka MLRS and BCPs. Based on the outcomes of this phase, the remaining systems will be overhauled by 510 ABW of the Corps of EME, with Tata Advanced Systems providing critical spares, quality assurance, and technical support.

The programme will leverage Tata Advanced Systems’ deep technical expertise, access to certified spares, and close coordination with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), ensuring minimal downtime and enhanced lifecycle support for the Pinaka fleet.

Indigenous Artillery Backbone

The Pinaka MLRS has been designed and developed in partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and has emerged as a cornerstone of India’s rocket artillery capability. Tata Advanced Systems stated that the system now features nearly 80% indigenous content, reflecting a high degree of self-reliance and strategic autonomy under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

A significant number of Pinaka launchers supplied by Tata Advanced Systems are already operationally deployed with the Indian Army, reinforcing the company’s growing footprint in land combat systems.

Combat-Proven Capabilities

The Pinaka MLRS is an all-weather, indirect-fire artillery weapon capable of delivering high-volume, precision firepower against critical targets. Mounted on an 8×8 high-mobility vehicle, it features automated shoot-and-scoot capability for rapid deployment, enhanced survivability, and effective operations across varied and challenging terrain.

Strategic Significance

The overhaul and upgradation programme is expected to extend the service life, improve reliability, and maintain combat effectiveness of first-generation Pinaka systems, ensuring they remain mission-ready amid evolving operational requirements. The order further underscores the Indian Army’s confidence in domestic industry and highlights Tata Advanced Systems’ role as a key partner in India’s artillery modernisation and indigenisation drive.
