New Delhi, January 25, 2026 โ Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force, who made history as the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS), is set to receive the Ashoka Chakra, Indiaโs highest peacetime gallantry award. The announcement was made on the occasion of Republic Day 2026, recognizing his exceptional contribution to space exploration and national pride.
The Ashoka Chakra is awarded for the most conspicuous bravery or some act of daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice otherwise than in the face of the enemy. Group Captain Shuklaโs honour marks a rare instance where the award has been conferred for achievements in the domain of space research and international scientific collaboration.

In June 2025, Group Captain Shukla participated in the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a private spaceflight organized by Axiom Space in partnership with NASA and SpaceX. As the mission pilot, he spent approximately 18 days aboard the ISS, conducting scientific experiments and representing India on a global stage. This mission made him the second Indian citizen to travel to spaceโfollowing Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984โand the first to board the International Space Station.

His journey, covering millions of kilometers and involving numerous orbits, has been hailed as a landmark achievement for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Gaganyaan programme. The mission provided valuable data and experience that will support Indiaโs future human spaceflight endeavours.
The Presidentโs approval for the gallantry awards, including the Ashoka Chakra to Group Captain Shukla, was announced alongside honours for other armed forces personnel. This recognition underscores Indiaโs growing stature in space exploration and the valor displayed by its service members in diverse fields.

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shuklaโs distinguished career includes over 2,000 hours of flying experience as a test pilot in the Indian Air Force. His selection for the Ax-4 mission further highlights his expertise and dedication. The award will be formally conferred during the Republic Day celebrations.
