Meet Lt Colonel Neelam Chand: From Army Kid to Military Nursing Officer

Growing up as an Army kid, Lt Col Neelam Chand’s life was steeped in discipline, service, and sacrifice. Watching her father serve in the Army Medical Corps planted the seed of a dream — to dedicate her own life to those who dedicate theirs to the nation. That early exposure to the armed forces gave her not just admiration for the uniform, but a zeal to wear it herself.

Her childhood was marked by determination. A sharp shooter at the district level in Lucknow, she proved her focus and precision early on. Her achievements in the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where she earned awards for excellence in drill ,parade and shooting, further strengthened her resolve to join the services. Yet, her path was not without obstacles. As one of three sisters, she faced societal challenges and the weight of expectations. Life tested her with struggles and failures, but her strong mind and unyielding spirit carried her forward.

Joining the Military Nursing Service was both a personal victory and a professional calling. In uniform, Lt Col Chand has become a symbol of resilience and dedication. Her exemplary service was recognized with a Commendation in 2022 by the South Western Command, and during the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, she was honored with the Award of Excellence for her tireless contributions.

Behind her achievements stands a strong support system. Her husband, an Air Force officer, has been her steadfast companion, encouraging her through every challenge. Together, they are raising two daughters, instilling in them the same values of resilience, discipline, and compassion that define their own lives.

A Soldier, A Scholar, A Storyteller

Her research on caregiver burden and psychological wellbeing reflects her dual identity: a soldier of science and a healer at heart. She has mastered the art of academic writing, ensuring her manuscripts meet the highest standards of originality and clarity, while her ability to design e-posters and present data visually makes her work accessible and impactful.

The Spirit of Service

Colleagues describe her as diligent, detail-oriented, and deeply committed to excellence. Her leadership style blends firmness with empathy, inspiring juniors and peers alike. She embodies the ethos of the armed forces — service before self — while reminding everyone that compassion is the true strength of a caregiver.
