New Delhi, May 10, 2026 — Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, currently serving as Vice Chief of Naval Staff, has been appointed as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Western Naval Command, headquartered in Mumbai. The appointment positions him at the helm of one of the Indian Navy’s most strategically significant commands, responsible for safeguarding India’s western maritime frontier and critical sea lanes in the Arabian Sea.
The decision, announced on May 10, 2026, reflects the Navy’s emphasis on placing seasoned operational leaders in key maritime commands amid evolving regional security dynamics.
Distinguished Career and Expertise
Vice Admiral Vatsayan is a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems with a naval career spanning more than 38 years. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988, and is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy in Pune. Over the course of his service, he has held a wide range of operational, command, and staff appointments that have equipped him with deep expertise in both frontline operations and strategic planning.
Operational and Command Experience
Vice Admiral Vatsayan has served onboard several frontline warships, including as part of the commissioning crew of INS Mysore and INS Nishank. He has commanded multiple naval platforms with distinction, including the missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, the missile corvette INS Kuthar, and the guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri, where he served as the commissioning commanding officer.
In February 2020, he assumed command as Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet. During this tenure, he directed several operational deployments and exercises at a time of heightened maritime activity following the Galwan crisis.

Strategic and Staff Contributions
At Naval Headquarters, Vice Admiral Vatsayan has held pivotal policy and planning roles, including Director Naval Plans (Perspective Planning) and Principal Director Naval Plans. Following his promotion to Flag Rank in 2018, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans). He subsequently held the positions of Deputy Commandant of the National Defence Academy and Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command.
Before assuming the role of Vice Chief of Naval Staff in August 2025, he served at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff in senior operational and policy capacities. In these roles, he contributed to the coordination of operations, force development, and policies advancing indigenisation across the armed forces.
In recognition of his distinguished service, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021.
