The honour was conferred upon him by President Droupadi Murmu during the Defence Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 8 June 2026. The award recognises his exceptional courage, sharp tactical judgement, and unwavering devotion to duty during counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Captain Sailo’s story is not just about a gallantry medal. It is the journey of a young officer from the hills of Aizawl who chose one of the toughest paths in military service and proved his mettle in some of the most dangerous operational environments.

Born in March 1999 in Chanmari Veng, Aizawl, Captain Lalrinawma Sailo grew up in Mizoram in a family that valued discipline, humility, and service. He is the youngest of three siblings and the son of Shri Saihmingliana Sailo. From a young age, he showed the determination and focus required to pursue a career in the armed forces.

His military journey began with his selection to the prestigious Rashtriya Indian Military College in Dehradun, an institution known for grooming future leaders of the Indian Armed Forces. He later joined the National Defence Academy in 2018, where cadets undergo rigorous academic, physical, and military training before moving on to their respective service academies.

Captain Sailo was commissioned into the Indian Army from the Indian Military Academy in 2021. His path from RIMC to NDA and then to IMA reflects the classic journey of many distinguished Indian military officers. However, what made his career even more remarkable was his selection into 4 PARA (Special Forces), one of the most elite and operationally demanding units of the Indian Army.

Serving in the Special Forces requires extraordinary levels of physical fitness, mental toughness, endurance, and courage. Officers and soldiers of PARA SF are trained for high-risk missions, including counter-terrorism, special reconnaissance, direct action, and operations in hostile environments. Captain Sailo’s presence in 4 PARA speaks of his exceptional capabilities as a soldier and leader.

As an Assault Team Commander, Captain Sailo has operated in challenging terrain and hostile conditions in Jammu and Kashmir. Special Forces operations in such areas demand quick decision-making, calmness under fire, and the ability to lead men in situations where the margin for error is extremely small.

The Kirti Chakra awarded to Captain Sailo recognises his conspicuous gallantry during Operation Sindoor, a major counter-terrorism operation. While many operational details remain restricted due to security reasons, available accounts describe his role as one of outstanding bravery and battlefield leadership.

During the operation, Captain Sailo led his assault team in a highly dangerous mission against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation reportedly involved close-quarter combat against heavily armed terrorists. Under his leadership, the team successfully achieved its objective and neutralised key terrorist elements.

Captain Sailo displayed exceptional courage by leading from the front. In a high-pressure combat situation, he showed presence of mind, tactical clarity, and personal bravery. His ability to identify and engage a high-value terrorist target proved crucial during the mission. He also continued to engage the remaining terrorists at close range, ensuring the success of the operation and the safety of his team.

Publicly available details also mention that his team had earlier played an important role in operations against terrorist infrastructure and networks. Such missions require not only physical courage but also intelligence-based planning, coordination, and precise execution. Captain Sailo’s actions reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army’s Special Forces.

His gallantry award was approved by President Droupadi Murmu on the eve of Independence Day 2025. Captain Sailo was among the select few personnel named for the Kirti Chakra that year. The formal presentation of the award took place on 8 June 2026 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the President honoured him for his dauntless courage and devotion to duty.

With this honour, Captain Lalrinawma Sailo became the first commissioned officer from Mizoram to receive the Kirti Chakra. He is also regarded as only the second Mizo recipient of the award overall, after Subedar Chalhnuna Lushai of the Assam Rifles, who had received the honour in 1968.

The achievement has generated widespread pride in Mizoram. The Government of Mizoram announced a cash award of ₹10 lakh in recognition of Captain Sailo’s bravery and service to the nation. Leaders across the state, including the Governor of Mizoram, General V. K. Singh (Retd), and Chief Minister Lalduhoma, extended their congratulations to the young officer.

For the people of Mizoram, Captain Sailo’s achievement is a historic moment. It highlights the contribution of the state and the wider Northeast region to India’s defence forces. The Northeast has produced many brave soldiers, officers, and gallantry award winners, and Captain Sailo’s recognition adds another proud chapter to that legacy.

His father, Shri Saihmingliana Sailo, expressed deep pride in his son’s achievement. At the same time, he noted that Captain Sailo remained committed to his duties in forward areas, reflecting the quiet professionalism of soldiers who continue to serve even after receiving national recognition.

Captain Sailo’s story is especially inspiring for young defence aspirants from Mizoram and the Northeast. His journey proves that with discipline, preparation, and courage, young Indians from any part of the country can reach the highest levels of military excellence.

For aspirants preparing for NDA, CDS, AFCAT, SSB interviews, and other defence entries, his life offers an important lesson. Success in the armed forces is not achieved overnight. It demands years of preparation, sacrifice, physical fitness, mental strength, and a deep sense of purpose.

Captain Sailo’s rise from Aizawl to the ranks of 4 PARA (Special Forces) shows what focused ambition can achieve. His achievements also underline the importance of institutions like RIMC, NDA, and IMA in shaping young cadets into military leaders capable of handling the toughest responsibilities.

The Kirti Chakra is not merely a decoration; it is a symbol of courage in the face of grave danger. For Captain Sailo, it represents the trust placed in him by his men, his unit, and the nation. For Mizoram, it is a moment of collective pride. For India, it is a reminder of the bravery displayed by soldiers serving far from public attention.

In the demanding world of counter-terrorism operations, officers like Captain Lalrinawma Sailo stand as examples of leadership, courage, and commitment. Their work often remains behind the scenes, but their actions have a direct impact on national security.

Captain Lalrinawma Sailo’s journey from the peaceful hills of Chanmari Veng to the battlefield challenges of Jammu and Kashmir reflects the true spirit of the Indian Army. His courage under fire, his leadership as a Special Forces officer, and his historic Kirti Chakra honour have made him an inspiration for an entire generation.

As a proud son of Mizoram and a decorated officer of 4 PARA (Special Forces), Captain Sailo has already carved a special place in India’s military history. His story will continue to inspire young Indians to serve the nation with courage, discipline, and honour.
