In a bizarre case that has raised serious concerns about the misuse of military identity, a 21-year-old man from Shahjahanpur was detained on Friday after allegedly impersonating a Brigadier in the Indian Army for several weeks. The accused, identified as Aryan Verma, was caught during a sting operation at the Shaheed Sangrahalaya (Martyrs’ Museum) inside the Shahjahanpur Cantonment area.
According to officials, Aryan Verma had been moving around the city and nearby areas in a private Tata Harrier SUV fitted with a Brigadier’s one-star plate and the Army Headquarters flag. He was accompanied by two hired bouncers, whom he reportedly introduced as National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, while projecting himself as a serving senior Army officer.
Background of the Accused
Aryan Verma, a resident of Durga Enclave Colony in Roza, Shahjahanpur, had been staying in Delhi while preparing for competitive examinations. After failing the NEET examination twice, he reportedly shifted his focus toward Army recruitment. In January 2026, he informed his family and locals that he had been selected as a Brigadier in the Indian Army’s “RN Brigade” and was posted at the Command Hospital in Chandigarh.
He subsequently began appearing in the ceremonial uniform of a Brigadier and interacted with people while claiming to be a high-ranking officer. On or around May 26, he hired two bouncers at ₹2,000 per day and started moving around the city in his modified private vehicle displaying military insignia.
How the Impersonation Was Exposed
The case came to light after two ex-servicemen, Satish Singh Chauhan and Sudesh Mishra, grew suspicious of the young man claiming to be a Brigadier. They found it highly unusual for someone so young to hold such a senior rank, especially while travelling with private security personnel and using military symbols on a civilian vehicle.
The veterans contacted Aryan Verma and invited him to the Shaheed Sangrahalaya in the cantonment area on the pretext of counselling children who aspired to join the armed forces. They also informed the Station Commander, Colonel Bharat Singh. Army authorities had reportedly been tracking Verma since April after receiving inputs about a person frequently seen in Brigadier’s uniform inside the cantonment area.

On Friday morning, Aryan Verma arrived at the venue dressed in full Brigadier uniform, travelling in the SUV with military markings and accompanied by his two bouncers. He was immediately detained by Army personnel as part of a planned operation.
Items Recovered During the Operation
During the operation, authorities recovered several suspicious items from his possession, including:
- A fake government identity card
- An identity card bearing the purported seal of the Dean, Armed Forces Medical College (suspected to be forged)
- An Army regimental cane
- A fake pistol
An Army Intelligence team from Bareilly has taken over the preliminary investigation. The team is questioning the accused to determine the motive behind the impersonation, the source of the forged documents and uniform, and whether he was acting alone or had accomplices.

Police Statement
Superintendent of Police, Shahjahanpur, Saurabh Dixit, confirmed that Aryan Verma has been detained. “Army authorities are currently interrogating the accused. Once their inquiry is complete and custody is transferred to the police, an FIR will be registered under relevant sections, and a thorough investigation will be conducted,” he stated.
Family Background
Aryan Verma’s father, Anil Verma, works as a Horticulture Inspector, while his mother, Manoja Devi, is a teacher in the Basic Education Department.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for vigilance against individuals misusing the identity and symbols of the armed forces. Such acts not only undermine the dignity of the institution but also have the potential to mislead the public and exploit the respect commanded by military personnel.
Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
