Conducted by in-house Naval Yoga practitioners and led by Lieutenant Commander Aarush Sharma, the initiative provided participants with firsthand experience of the benefits of controlled breathing techniques, mental focus and physical conditioning under demanding conditions.

Officials noted that the event reflected the Indian Navy’s commitment to promoting holistic well-being among its personnel while embracing innovative approaches to fitness and mental health. The underwater yoga session also underscored the relevance of yoga in enhancing operational effectiveness, particularly in specialised domains such as submarine operations that require exceptional levels of mental and physical endurance.

The event was organised as part of the lead-up to the International Day of Yoga 2026, whose theme is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”. The theme emphasises the role of yoga in promoting physical health, mental well-being, emotional resilience and an improved quality of life.

The initiative also aligned with the broader International Day of Yoga message of “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” reinforcing yoga’s universal appeal as a tool for wellness, harmony and self-development.

As India and the world prepare to observe the International Day of Yoga on 21 June, the Indian Navy’s underwater yoga session stands out as a remarkable demonstration of innovation, discipline and the enduring relevance of yoga in modern military life.

The event highlighted how the timeless principles of yoga continue to support the physical and mental readiness of India’s armed forces while inspiring a culture of wellness and resilience across all domains of service.
