President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu unveiled and flagged off the trophies of the Durand Cup Tournament 2026 at a function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on 07 July 2026.
The President unveiled the trophies associated with the historic football tournament, including the Durand Cup, the President’s Cup and the Shimla Trophy. The event marked an important moment ahead of the 2026 edition of the tournament.
Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu congratulated all past and present officials and players associated with the Durand Cup. She said that the tournament has provided a platform for numerous talented footballers over the years.
The President expressed happiness that new teams would compete in this year’s edition of the tournament. She noted that a team from Sri Lanka would also participate, along with other new teams. She said that the inclusion of new teams would make the historic competition even more popular.
President Murmu conveyed her best wishes to all participating teams and players and hoped that they would deliver stellar performances during the tournament.
Highlighting the importance of football, the President said that it is one of the most popular sports in the world. She described football as a unique example of excellence, unity and sportsmanship. She said that the sport brings people together and inspires sports enthusiasts across the world through outstanding performances by players.
The President also referred to the ongoing FIFA World Cup and said that the world’s best teams and players are competing to enhance the prestige of football in their respective nations. She noted that these teams and players have fans across the globe who appreciate their fine performances.

Speaking about India’s football journey, President Murmu said that the country still has a long way to go to establish its presence on the global football stage. She expressed hope that the Durand Cup Tournament would play a significant role in nurturing football talent in India.
The President also underlined the wider significance of sporting spirit, saying that its value is not limited to sports alone. She said that sports teach the values of equality, cooperation and remaining steadfast even in adverse circumstances.
Linking the spirit of football with the national goal of Viksit Bharat, President Murmu said that India is moving forward to transform itself into a developed nation by 2047. She expressed confidence that citizens of the country would achieve this goal by standing united, just as football players support one another in their team’s march to victory.
