Mumbai, August 16, 2026: In a deeply tragic incident that came to light on Independence Day, an Indian Navy sailor, his wife, and their two minor children were found dead at their residential quarters in the high-security Navy Nagar area of Colaba, south Mumbai. Preliminary police findings indicate the sailor died by suicide through hanging, while his wife and the two children are suspected to have been poisoned.
The bodies were discovered on Saturday night (August 15) after local police and naval security personnel were alerted when the family failed to respond to calls. According to the Cuffe Parade (also referred to as Cuff Parade) police, the sailor was found hanging inside the residence. The bodies of his wife and the two children—aged three years and two months—were also recovered from the premises.
Preliminary Findings and Investigation
Police have described the initial assessment as prima facie. A police official stated that it appears the man committed suicide, while the wife and children were poisoned. Mumbai Police, in an official update, confirmed: “An incident has been reported from Navy Nagar where a sailor along with his wife and 2 kids (2 month and 3 years) have died at their residence. Prima facie he has committed suicide by hanging, and the reason of death of the wife and children seems to be poisoning as per prima facie investigation.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police Manish Kalwaniya has also indicated that a preliminary investigation pointed to hanging in the case of the sailor and poisoning in the case of the wife and children. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Forensic teams have examined the scene, and police are investigating all possible angles, including the sequence of events and any circumstances that may have led to the deaths. Identities of the deceased have not been publicly disclosed.
Authorities have stressed that these are preliminary observations. The exact cause of death for each individual, the precise timeline, and any underlying factors will be determined only after post-mortem reports and further forensic analysis are available. Investigators are recording statements from family members, neighbours, and other relevant witnesses.
Indian Navy Statement
The Indian Navy issued an official statement confirming the incident: “In an unfortunate incident at Navy Nagar, Colaba, an Indian Navy sailor along with his wife and 2 children have been found dead at their residence on 15 Aug 26. Investigation is in progress by the Police and the Indian Navy is extending all possible assistance towards the same.”
Navy Nagar is a restricted, high-security cantonment area housing naval personnel and their families. The fact that the deaths occurred inside official residential quarters has drawn heightened attention, with both civil police and naval authorities coordinating closely.

The discovery on the night of India’s Independence Day has added to the sense of shock surrounding the case.
