Retired Officer Detained in Madras Regiment Arms Theft Case, Stolen Arms Recovered

The Indian Army has strongly refuted reports claiming that three serving Army officers were arrested or detained in connection with the case, describing such reports as “factually incorrect, misleading and unverified.”

Hyderabad, September 11, 2026 — Investigators have detained a retired military officer in connection with the theft of service weapons and ammunition from the 20 Madras Regiment premises at Bolarum in Secunderabad Cantonment, marking a major breakthrough in a case that had remained unsolved for more than 10 days.

According to multiple reports, Malkajgiri Police, working with the Hyderabad Task Force and Telangana Counter Intelligence, identified the former officer as a key suspect and took him into custody. The officer is said to have retired only about two months earlier. Investigators have reportedly established his alleged role in the theft. During questioning, he is said to have named two or three other persons, whose involvement is being verified.

Several later accounts described the retired officer as the alleged mastermind of an insider operation. Some reports said he was suspected of acting out of a personal grudge against a former commanding officer; other accounts referred to allegations of addiction and assistance from serving personnel. Those motive claims have not been formally confirmed by the police.

What was stolen

The theft was detected at about 7.50 a.m. on August 31, when Army personnel opened the Kote (armoury) and the Battalion Magazine and found locks and storage boxes broken. The weapons and ammunition had last been physically accounted for at around 6 p.m. on August 30.

The missing cache, as recorded in the complaint and subsequent reports, comprised:

  • four 7.62×39 mm AK-203 assault rifles
  • one 5.56 mm INSAS 1B1 rifle
  • six 9 mm Auto 1A pistols
  • one 6.35-bore civilian pistol
  • 21 magazines
  • one passive night-vision binocular
  • more than 1,800 rounds of live ammunition, with some accounts placing the figure above 1,900

The official value of the stolen property was estimated at about ₹15 lakh, though investigators noted that the items could command a far higher price on the illicit market.

A Lieutenant Colonel of the 20 Madras Regiment, identified in official papers as Lt Col Mayank Govitirkar, lodged a complaint at Bollaram Police Station. Police registered a case under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to house-breaking and theft from a specially protected place.

How the case was cracked

From the outset, investigators treated the incident as an insider job. The two storage rooms stood about 40 metres apart. Both were breached. Guards posted nearby reported seeing nothing. Reports also said surveillance cameras covering the armoury were switched off at night, and that the main body of the battalion, including senior officers, was away on field firing at Pokhran in Rajasthan when the theft occurred.

A multi-agency inquiry followed, involving Malkajgiri Police, the Hyderabad Task Force, Telangana Counter Intelligence, Military Intelligence, the National Investigation Agency and other central agencies. Teams initially questioned about 10 personnel before narrowing the focus. The Army ordered a court of inquiry. The NIA joined the probe to examine any possible extremist or organised-crime angle.

By Friday morning, sources told news organisations that the case had been cracked after an intensive 10- to 11-day hunt. Media reported that a joint team had recovered all stolen firearms and ammunition after detaining and questioning an insider. The Hans India and other outlets said four suspects, including the retired officer, were in custody and that the weapons had been recovered. Some reports placed the recovery in Hyderabad; at least one account mentioned Nagarkurnool. Police were continuing to examine how the arms were removed from the cantonment, transported and concealed.

Army denial on serving officers

Reports that three serving Army officers had been arrested or detained drew a prompt rebuttal. The Indian Army said such reports were “factually incorrect, misleading and unverified.” It added that a joint investigation was under way and was being conducted by the concerned authorities. The Army’s statement did not address the detention of the retired officer.

What remains open

Authorities have not yet issued a detailed official statement naming the accused, listing charges, or confirming the exact place and circumstances of any recovery. Investigators are still examining the roles of each person named during questioning, the transport network used to move the weapons, and whether a buyer had been identified in advance. Possible black-market links remain under scrutiny. No terror link has been officially established.

The episode has also revived questions about armoury discipline: night-time camera shutdowns, record-keeping at the Kote, the adequacy of sentry cover when the battalion was away, and how two separate high-security rooms could be forced open without detection. Those issues are expected to form part of the Army’s internal court of inquiry, independent of the criminal investigation.

An official statement on arrests and charges is awaited.
