For some, success comes with the first opportunity. For others, it demands years of patience, repeated setbacks and the courage to keep trying when giving up seems far easier. Lieutenant Vivek Kumar Singh belongs to the second category.
Hailing from a small place in Bihar, Vivek grew up with a dream that had never been achieved in his bloodline before to wear the uniform of an officer in the Indian Armed Forces. The journey towards that dream would eventually stretch across four years and 12 attempts.
Along the way, Vivek built a promising career in the corporate world. He joined Accenture as an Analyst, a position that offered him stability and a clear professional path. Yet, despite having a career many young professionals aspire to, his ambition to serve in uniform remained stronger.
His journey was far from straightforward. At one stage, Vivek came close to joining the Indian Air Force but was medically ruled out. For many aspirants, reaching that far only to lose the opportunity on medical grounds can be devastating. For Vivek, however, it became another chapter rather than the end of the story.
He continued preparing for the Armed Forces while managing the demands of his corporate schedule. Working professionally during the day and keeping his military aspirations alive required discipline, consistency and enormous patience. Every unsuccessful attempt meant returning to preparation once again.
One attempt became another, and eventually the count reached 12 over a period of four years.
But Vivek kept going.
His persistence finally paid off when he made it through SSC (Tech)-65 and earned the opportunity he had been chasing for years training to become an officer in the Indian Army.
That achievement also meant making a major professional choice. Vivek left behind his promising career as an Analyst at Accenture to pursue the life he had worked so hard to earn.
After undergoing the demanding training required of an Army officer, the young man from Bihar finally marched out of the Officers Training Academy, Gaya, as Lieutenant Vivek Kumar Singh.
The moment represented much more than receiving stars on his shoulders. It was the culmination of four years of preparation, 12 attempts, a medical setback with the Air Force, countless hours of preparation alongside a corporate job, and the decision to continue believing in a dream despite repeated disappointments.
He also became the first person in his bloodline to achieve the distinction of becoming a commissioned officer, turning a personal ambition into a milestone for his entire family.
Lt Vivek Kumar Singh’s story carries an important lesson for every defence aspirant facing rejection. An unsuccessful attempt does not necessarily determine where the journey will end. Sometimes it simply means that another route remains to be discovered.
He could have accepted the security of his corporate career. He could have allowed the Air Force medical rejection or any of his unsuccessful attempts to convince him that the dream was over. Instead, he continued working towards what he wanted.
Twelve attempts may look like 11 failures followed by one success. But without those 11 occasions when he chose to try again, the 12th opportunity would never have arrived.
Today, the former Accenture Analyst wears the uniform of the Indian Army.
From a small place in Bihar to the corporate corridors of Accenture, from being medically ruled out of the Air Force to finally marching out of OTA Gaya as an Army officer, Lt Vivek Kumar Singh’s journey is a reminder that the road to the uniform does not have to be perfect.
It only requires you to keep moving.
