Lieutenant Colonel Preeti Poniya of the Indian Army has delivered an impressive sporting performance in the challenging high-altitude conditions of Ladakh, completing the Half Marathon at the Ladakh Marathon 2026 in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 43 seconds, according to the provisional timing communicated by the event’s timing partner.
An Agra native currently posted in Leh, Lt Col Preeti Poniya participated in the 21.0975-km Half Marathon with Bib No. 25447. Her performance reportedly earned her a Gold Medal in her category, adding another achievement to her journey as an Army officer and endurance runner.
The Ladakh Marathon presents a distinctive challenge because of the region’s high altitude. Leh lies at an elevation of around 11,500 feet above sea level, where the reduced availability of oxygen places significantly greater demands on runners compared with races conducted closer to sea level.
Despite the demanding conditions, Lt Col Preeti completed the 21.1-km course in a provisional time of 02:10:43. The performance required sustained physical endurance, careful pacing and the ability to cope with the physiological challenges associated with running at high altitude.

Her achievement also highlights the levels of physical conditioning and mental resilience cultivated through military service. Serving in Leh means operating in an environment characterised by high altitude, difficult terrain and extreme climatic conditions, and her performance on the marathon course demonstrated those qualities in a competitive sporting setting.

For Agra, Lt Col Preeti Poniya’s achievement is also a proud moment. Her success provides an inspiring example for young athletes and defence aspirants, demonstrating how discipline, preparation and perseverance can help individuals perform under demanding circumstances.
High-altitude endurance running is particularly challenging because lower atmospheric pressure reduces the amount of oxygen available to the body. Even athletes accustomed to long-distance running can find maintaining their usual pace considerably more difficult at elevations such as those encountered in Ladakh.
Against this backdrop, completing a Half Marathon in just over two hours represents a notable performance. Lt Col Preeti’s run combined the endurance of an athlete with the discipline and determination associated with military service.
Her success at the Ladakh Marathon 2026 adds to the many sporting accomplishments of personnel serving in the Indian Armed Forces, who regularly participate in endurance races, mountaineering expeditions and national and international sporting competitions alongside their professional military responsibilities.
From Agra to the high-altitude landscape of Ladakh, Lt Col Preeti Poniya’s achievement stands as a story of perseverance and sporting excellence, with her Gold Medal performance offering another example of an Indian Army officer excelling beyond the call of regular military duties.
