In a swift and decisive operation, the Indian Navy thwarted the nefarious designs of Somali pirates aiming to hijack ships traversing the region by intercepting the ex-MV Ruen, a vessel previously commandeered by pirates.
The ex-MV Ruen, which had fallen into the hands of Somali pirates on December 14, 2023, resurfaced as a pirate ship, intent on perpetrating acts of piracy on the high seas.
Acting on intelligence inputs, Indian Navy warships promptly responded to the threat, intercepting the vessel on March 15.
The interception took a tense turn as the ex-MV Ruen opened fire on the Indian Navy warship. However, adhering to international law and rules of engagement, the Indian Navy responded with measured self-defence measures, employing minimal force necessary to neutralize the pirates’ threat to shipping and seafarers.
