Historical Background of OTA Chennai

The roots of OTA Chennai can be traced back to the need for officers during World War II. Between 1942 and 1945, seven Officers Training Schools were established in India to meet the escalating demand for officers in the Indian and Commonwealth Armies. However, these schools were eventually closed down when the war ended.

In the aftermath of the Sino-Indian War in 1962, India recognized the necessity of expanding its officer cadre. To address this, two Officers Training Schools were set up in Pune and Madras (now known as Chennai). The process of establishing these schools began in September 1962.

On 15th January 1963, the Chennai School of OTA was inaugurated by Brigadier Ram Singh, becoming the first-ever Commandant. The Pune School, unfortunately, had a short run and was closed in 1964. However, the Chennai School continued to operate and received the sanction to shift its focus towards training officers for the Short Service Regular Commission on 2nd February 1965.

Structure of OTA Chennai

Spread over a sprawling 750 acres, OTA Chennai is a premier institution that imparts rigorous training to officer cadets. The academy consists of two training battalions: Ranjit Singh Battalion and Shivaji Battalion. These battalions are further divided into seven companies, each with its unique history and significance.

Ranjit Singh Battalion

Named after Maharaja Ranjit Singh, also known as the “Lion of Punjab,” the Ranjit Singh Battalion is one of the two training battalions at OTA Chennai. It comprises four companies: Jessami, Kohima, Basantar, and Phillora. While Jessami, Kohima, and Basantar companies are for gentlemen cadets, Phillora Company is exclusively for lady cadets.

Jessami Company

Jessami Company derives its name from the Battle of Jessami, a significant engagement during World War II in the Burma Sector. The soldiers of 1 ASSAM Regiment, also known as the “Brave Rhinos,” fought gallantly against the Japanese for seven days, displaying unwavering courage and determination. The officer cadets of Jessami Company proudly call themselves “Jaguars.”

Naushera Company

Naushera Company gets its name from the Battle of Naushera, one of the fiercest battles of the 1947-48 Indo-Pak war. The Indian soldiers defending Naushera displayed undaunted courage and supreme sacrifice against the Pakistani invaders.
