In a solemn and poignant ceremony held on May 29, 2024, Lt Gen Rakesh Kapoor, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information Systems & Coordination), commemorated the 76th anniversary of UN Peacekeepers Day by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial (NWM).

The event paid homage to the brave soldiers who have laid down their lives while serving in various peacekeeping missions around the world, dedicated to the cause of peace and stability.

The wreath-laying ceremony, an annual observance, honors the sacrifices of peacekeepers who have served under the United Nations banner.

Lt Gen Kapoorโ€™s presence underscored the Indian Armyโ€™s commitment to global peacekeeping efforts and its deep respect for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Lt Gen Kapoor, while addressing the gathering, highlighted the significant contributions of Indian peacekeepers.

The ceremony was attended by a distinguished group of officials, including Ms. Andrea M. Wojnar, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Resident Representative in India. Senior military officers, officials from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as well as various other dignitaries, were also present.

Their attendance symbolized the collective appreciation and respect for the peacekeepersโ€™ efforts and sacrifices.

Ms. Wojnar, in her remarks, acknowledged the critical role played by peacekeepers in maintaining global peace and security. She emphasized the importance of international cooperation and the dedication required to sustain peacekeeping operations.

The National War Memorial, a sacred place of remembrance, was adorned with flowers and wreaths as a tribute to the fallen heroes.

The attendees observed a moment of silence to honor the peacekeepers who have died in the line of duty. The solemnity of the occasion was palpable as the dignitaries reflected on the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.
