Origins of Mention in Despatches

The Mention in Despatches, or MID, is one of the oldest forms of imperial recognition for military service and gallantry. The origins of this prestigious award can be traced back to the era when official reports, known as “despatches,” were regularly sent by senior commanders in the field to relay information about the progress of military operations.

The Mention-in-Despatches is a unique and prestigious recognition awarded to individuals within the Indian Armed Forces, instituted on 25th November 1950. It honors distinguished and meritorious service in operational areas, as well as acts of gallantry that do not quite meet the threshold for more prominent gallantry awards.

Design of the Emblem

The distinction of Mention-in-Despatches is symbolized not by a traditional medal but by an emblem—a lotus leaf—that can be proudly worn on the ribbon of the Campaign Medal associated with the specific campaign in which the recipient’s name was mentioned.

Mentioned in Dispatches emblem

This elegant yet subtle design allows the individual to display their commendable service without the need for a separate medal, blending seamlessly with other campaign awards and maintaining the decorum and uniformity of military decorations.

Eligibility Criteria

The Mention-in-Despatches is open to a wide range of personnel within the Indian Armed Forces, including:

  • Members of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force
  • Personnel of the Reserve Forces, Territorial Army, and Militia
  • Other lawfully constituted armed forces
  • Members of the Nursing Services
  • Civilians working under or alongside the Armed Forces

This inclusivity ensures that all individuals who contribute to the defense and operational success of the nation, regardless of their specific role or branch of service, are eligible for recognition.

Conditions for Awarding

The Mention-in-Despatches is awarded for service or acts of gallantry that, while significant, do not rise to the level required for higher gallantry awards. This includes:

  • Distinguished and meritorious service in operational areas.
  • Acts of gallantry that, while commendable, fall short of the criteria for other gallantry awards.

Notably, names can be mentioned posthumously, ensuring that those who have given their lives in service to the nation are duly recognized. Additionally, there is no restriction on the number of times an individual’s name can be mentioned in despatches, allowing for multiple recognitions of continued or repeated acts of service and bravery.

Certificate of Mention

Recipients of the Mention-in-Despatches are also issued a certificate as a formal acknowledgment of their service. The certificate reads:

“Under the orders of the President of the Republic of India, the mention of (name) in a despatch by the Commander-in-Chief, Indian Army/Indian Navy/Indian Air Force, was published in the Gazette of India on (date).”

This certificate serves as an official record of the recognition, providing a lasting testament to the individual’s contributions.

Significance and Criteria

The Mention in Despatches holds immense significance within the Indian Armed Forces, as it serves as a public commendation for the exemplary actions of its recipients. This recognition can be awarded for a specific act of valor, such as a display of exceptional courage in the face of the enemy, or for a prolonged period of outstanding service and dedication to the nation.

Unlike other military decorations, the Mention in Despatches can be conferred posthumously, underscoring the enduring legacy of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country.

Evolution and Acknowledgment

Over the years, the Mention in Despatches has undergone various transformations in its recognition and representation. Prior to 1919, those who were Mentioned in Despatches received no formal acknowledgment beyond the publication of their names in the prestigious pages of The London Gazette.

However, in the aftermath of the First World War, a certificate was introduced to formally recognize and commemorate those who had been so honored.

The Emblem and Insignia

The following year, in 1920, a distinctive emblem was created to be worn by those who had been Mentioned in Despatches during the period of the First World War, from August 4, 1914, to August 10, 1920.

This emblem took the form of a bronze oak leaf, to be worn at a low angle in the center of the ribbon of the Victory Medal. The use of the oak leaf was a symbolic representation of the resilience and steadfastness displayed by the recipients.

Mention in Despatches in the Indian Armed Forces

The tradition of Mention in Despatches has long been upheld within the Indian Armed Forces, with countless brave individuals being recognized for their extraordinary feats of valor and service. Under the orders of the President of the Republic of India the mention of name a despatch by the Commander-in-Chief, Indian Army/Indian Navy/Indian Air Force, is published in the Gazette of India.

Posthumous Mentions and Replacement

The Mention in Despatches holds the unique distinction of being one of the few military honors that can be conferred posthumously, underscoring the gravity and significance of this recognition. In instances where a recipient has passed away, the emblem or insignia can be presented to the family members, ensuring that the legacy of their loved one’s sacrifice is forever etched in the collective memory of the nation.

Significance and Prestige

The Mention in Despatches stands as a symbol of the highest esteem and recognition within the Indian Armed Forces. It is a coveted honor that reflects the unwavering commitment, exceptional courage, and distinguished service of those who have answered the call to defend the nation. The mere mention of this prestigious award evokes a sense of awe and reverence, as it represents the pinnacle of military excellence and the embodiment of the warrior spirit that has always been the hallmark of the Indian Armed Forces.

Impact on Morale and Motivation

The Mention in Despatches not only confers a tangible honor upon its recipients but also serves as a powerful source of inspiration and motivation for the entire military community. The knowledge that such a prestigious award can be bestowed upon those who demonstrate extraordinary bravery and dedication fuels a sense of pride and determination among the ranks, driving them to strive for the highest standards of excellence in their service to the nation.

Enduring Legacy and Continued Significance

The legacy of the Mention in Despatches continues to resonate within the Indian Armed Forces, even as the modern system of honors and awards has evolved. The stories of those who have been so recognized, their acts of valor and selfless service, serve as a constant reminder of the indomitable spirit that has defined the Indian military throughout its history. This enduring legacy continues to inspire generations of soldiers, sailors, and airmen, ensuring that the tradition of the Mention in Despatches remains a cherished and revered aspect of the Indian Armed Forces’ proud heritage.

Conclusion

The Mention in Despatches stands as a testament to the unwavering courage, dedication, and selfless service of the men and women who have donned the uniform of the Indian Armed Forces. This prestigious award, with its roots firmly planted in the annals of military history, continues to be a symbol of the highest esteem and recognition, bestowed upon those who have risen above the call of duty to defend the honor and integrity of our beloved nation. As the Indian Armed Forces continue to evolve and adapt to the changing demands of modern warfare, the legacy of the Mention in Despatches will undoubtedly endure, serving as a constant source of inspiration and motivation for generations to come.
