In an initiative that merges adventure with remembrance, a motorcycle expedition organized by the Indian Army was officially launched from Mipi in Arunachal Pradeshโ€™s Dibang Valley. The expedition aims to honor the soldiers who valiantly fought during the 1962 Sino-India conflict, particularly commemorating the Battle of Walong.

Flagged off by Major General VS Deshpande, the General Officer Commanding of the Dao Division, the event took place in the presence of local MLA Mopi Mihu and various state government officials. The motorcycle team comprises 20 members, including 10 personnel from the Armyโ€™s Spear Corps and an equal number of civilians.

The expedition is set to make scheduled stops at Roing in the Lower Dibang Valley district and Hayuliang in the Anjaw district, traversing through the scenic Mishmi ranges. According to defense spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, the journey will culminate at the historic Walong War Memorial on November 11.

The backdrop of the expedition is steeped in history; the Battle of Walong holds a significant place in Indiaโ€™s military narrative. It was fought in October 1962 amidst the challenging terrains of Kibithu, Namti Tri Junction โ€” known as Tigerโ€™s Mouth โ€” and other strategic points in the easternmost region of Arunachal Pradesh. During this period, Chinese forces launched an aggressive incursion into Indian territory, placing the onus of defense on the 11th Infantry Brigade of the Indian Armyโ€™s 2nd Infantry Division.

The 11th Infantry Brigade was composed of the 6 Kumaon, 4 Sikh, and 3/3 Gorkha Rifles, which faced an adversary that was not only larger in numbers but also had superior equipment and advantageous positions. Their courageous defense played a vital role in stalling the Chinese advance, offering a significant morale boost to the nation and exemplifying the indomitable spirit of Indian soldiers.

The motorcyclists are not just retracing these historic paths; they are also engaging with local communities at each stop. This aspect of the journey emphasizes the strength, resilience, and solidarity that characterize the region, while also promoting national integration. Lt Col Rawat highlighted that this route serves as a testament to the Indian Armyโ€™s commitment to fostering unity and encouraging adventure tourism in border areas.

This motorcycle expedition is part of a broader month-long celebration initiated on October 17, honoring the 62nd anniversary of the Battle of Walong, solidifying the connection between history, remembrance, and the bonds that unify the diverse tapestry of the nation.
