In a recent address, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi highlighted India’s robust maritime domain awareness capabilities, asserting that the Indian Navy is vigilant in monitoring maritime activities to safeguard national interests. Speaking after the grand finale of THINQ 2024, a nationwide quiz competition organized by the Navy, Tripathi emphasized the extensive surveillance mechanisms that ensure “who is where and who is doing what” in the waters critical to India.
During the event at the Ezhimala Naval Academy, the Navy Chief responded to queries regarding China’s growing maritime presence, particularly its dual carrier operations in the South China Sea. Tripathi downplayed the significance of these maneuvers, asserting that they pose no concern for India. “What China does in any part of the globe, let them do it. What they do in our area of interest, we are keeping a close watch,” he remarked, reinforcing confidence in the Navy’s operational readiness.
He elaborated on the Navy’s commitment to monitoring activities in the Indian Ocean, reiterating that every movement, whether military or non-military, is closely tracked to ensure India’s national interests remain intact. “We have got a fantastic organization to keep the oceans under watch. We know exactly who is where and who is doing what,” Tripathi stated, underscoring the importance of maritime surveillance.
In addition to addressing regional security concerns, the Chief of Naval Staff also expressed pride in the achievements of two young women naval officers who are currently undertaking a challenging mission to circumnavigate the globe as part of the Navika Sagar Parikrama-2 initiative. Expected to reach their first stop in Australia soon, the officers are well-prepared for the voyage, which includes navigating through various ports while facing unpredictable sea conditions.
Touching on community engagement, Tripathi noted the significance of initiatives like the THINQ quiz competition, which aims to educate the youth about the Navy’s roles during both peaceful and tumultuous times. He highlighted that innovation and technological advancement are priorities for the Indian Navy and that efforts are ongoing to recruit quality personnel through a meticulous selection process.
The THINQ 2024 competition saw widespread participation, with 12,600 schools from across 3,800 cities and towns competing, culminating in a grand finale featuring eight finalist teams. The event reflects the Navy’s efforts to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of naval operations among the younger generation, simultaneously promoting technological collaboration with public and private sectors.
Admiral Tripathi’s remarks convey a strong message of preparedness and confidence in the face of regional challenges, while also promoting the development and engagement of future naval officers and the broader community’s awareness of maritime issues.
