Sectarian violence in northwest Pakistan has resulted in the deaths of 13 additional individuals, as reported by a local government official on Saturday. The ongoing conflict, which pits Sunni and Shiite groups against each other, has continued to escalate despite multiple attempts at establishing ceasefires, with the total death toll now reaching 124 over recent weeks.
Kurram district, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, has been a flashpoint for sectarian tensions for decades due to its significant Shiite population in a predominantly Sunni country. The latest outbreak of violence began last Thursday when two Shiite Muslim convoys, traveling under police protection, were ambushed, leading to over 40 fatalities. In the aftermath, a series of confrontations utilizing both light and heavy weaponry have paralyzed the region, closing major roads and disrupting mobile phone services.
The local government official indicated that in the past two days alone, 13 more lives were lost—two Sunni and eleven Shiite—adding to the more than 50 wounded amid the ongoing clashes that persisted into Saturday morning. The official highlighted a prevailing atmosphere of distrust between the two communities, stating, “Neither tribe is willing to comply with government orders to cease hostilities.” He further noted that many residents are eager to evacuate the area due to the escalated violence, but a deteriorating security situation has made any exodus impossible.
Despite the provincial government announcing a seven-day ceasefire last weekend, the agreement failed to take hold. A subsequent 10-day truce was brokered on Wednesday, also proving ineffective in halting the fighting. A senior security official from Peshawar confirmed the staggering death toll and expressed concerns over potential further casualties, remarking that none of the provincial government’s peace initiatives have been fully executed or successful.
The constabulary has historically struggled to maintain order in Kurram, a region formerly part of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas until its integration into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan documented that between July and October, 79 individuals had already lost their lives due to sectarian unrest in this area. The underlying causes of the feuding are frequently linked to disputes over land and enduring tensions between the differing sects of Islam, which continue to ignite violent confrontations.
