President Murmu Highlights Indian Navy's Role in Maritime Security During Navy Day Celebrations

President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the Indian Navy’s crucial role in ensuring maritime security during the Navy Day celebrations held in Puri on Wednesday. She underscored that this security is vital for India’s ambition to transform into a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, coinciding with the country’s increasing global stature and its growing economic interests.

In her address, President Murmu praised the Navy’s achievements in self-reliance, highlighting its goal of becoming an Atmanirbhar (self-sufficient) force by 2047. Notably, she mentioned that there are currently 63 ships under construction, signaling significant progress in indigenous naval capabilities. “It is a matter of pride for every Indian that we are today one of only six nations capable of designing, building, and operating both a ballistic missile nuclear submarine and an aircraft carrier,” she stated, reflecting on India’s advanced maritime technology.

The integration of advanced technology, tactical expertise, and bravery within the Navy was spotlighted as a testament to its evolution into a combat-ready and future-oriented force. The Navy Day festivities attracted thousands of spectators, who gathered to witness a range of activities that showcased the Navy’s operational readiness and technological advancements. A total of fifteen warships, along with modern aircraft such as MiG 29K fighters and MH 60R helicopters, participated in the demonstration. Additionally, elite MARCOS commandos exhibited their expertise through beach reconnaissance drills.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi reinforced the Navy’s commitment to national security, stating, “The Indian Navy stands as a combat-ready, credible, cohesive, and future-ready force to safeguard India’s national maritime interests … anytime, anywhere, anyhow.” This proclamation highlighted the Navy’s readiness to address any challenges that may arise.

The celebrations also served to commemorate the historic Operation Trident of 1971. The event featured captivating performances, including those by the naval band and a traditional hornpipe dance performed by SCC cadets. As night fell, the event culminated in a stunning display of illuminated ships, paired with an innovative laser and drone show that left spectators in awe.

This year marked a significant milestone, being the second occasion that the Navy conducted such a conspicuous event outside a major naval station. This demonstration illustrated the Navy’s capability to operate effectively in diverse and remote locations.

Dignitaries present at the event included governor Raghubar Das, Orissa High Court Chief Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, and Puri King Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, alongside various Union ministers, MPs, MLAs, and senior military officials. The presence of these notable figures underscored the importance of the occasion and the strategic relevance of India’s naval capabilities in the contemporary global context.
