In a recent address at Inno-Yoddha, an Idea and Innovation Competition organized by the Indian Army’s Design Bureau, General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), underscored the significance of innovation in modern military operations. He articulated that innovation transcends mere terminology, describing it as a vital mindset that catalyzes progress and shapes future outcomes in the defense sector. He praised the creativity and ingenuity exhibited by participants in the competition, highlighting the essential role these innovations play in transforming the Indian Army’s capabilities.

Inno-Yoddha, held annually, serves as a crucial platform for identifying and promoting homegrown innovations that directly address the operational, logistical, and training challenges faced by the Army. This year, 75 innovations were meticulously shortlisted through a rigorous selection process that encompassed various levels—from unit to command headquarters. Among these, 22 of the most promising innovations were showcased at the event and received accolades from General Dwivedi, who emphasized that these selected projects will be further advanced under the purview of the Army Design Bureau, ensuring they cater effectively to the requirements of field formations.

The Indian Army operates in a complex environment marked by diverse terrains, unpredictable weather conditions, and evolving threats. General Dwivedi acknowledged that troops on the ground leverage their practical experiences to formulate impactful and feasible solutions to these issues. “Behind each idea is a story of countless hours of thought, research, and testing—a testament to the determination of our soldiers to contribute to the force and the nation,” he remarked, highlighting the commitment and hard work of the innovators.

The selected innovations will now undergo further enhancement through Research and Development (R&D) and Design and Development (D&D) programs, supported by the Army Technology Board and Base Workshops. Additionally, the Army ensures that Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) for the innovations are secured. Following successful standardization and ruggedization processes, these technologies are transferred to the private sector for mass production to fulfill the Army’s evolving needs.

Over the past four years, Inno-Yoddha has seen significant success, leading to 26 IPR filings and the successful completion of 21 innovative projects. Notably, three technologies have already been transitioned to private industry. These include “Exploder” by FC Tech, launched in June 2024; “Agniastra” by Red Kite Digital Tech, unveiled during the Army Commanders Conference in October 2024; and “Vidyut Rakshak,” which has been transferred to IS Trading Company. This progress illustrates a firm commitment to fostering innovation within the Indian Army, paving the way for enhanced military capabilities and operational effectiveness.
