Southern Naval Command Celebrates First Victory in 2024 Inter-Command Ocean Sailing Race

Kochi has emerged as the backdrop for a remarkable achievement as the Southern Naval Command (SNC) has secured its first victory in the 2024 Inter-Command Ocean Sailing Race, marking a significant milestone for the team. Competing aboard the sailing vessel INSV Bulbul, the SNC team was expertly led by Commander Vikas Sheoran, who expressed pride and enthusiasm about their accomplishment.

In an interview, Commander Vikas shared insights into their success, stating, “We had the winds in our favour and our team took full advantage of it. It’s indeed an honour to win the trophy for SNC. I’m certain it will inspire more people at the Command to take up sailing.” This victory not only showcases the skill and teamwork of the SNC but also highlights the growing interest in sailing within the Indian Navy.

The third edition of the prestigious race was organized by the Ocean Sailing Node under the auspices of the Indian Naval Sailing Institute (INSA). The event kicked off from INS Mandovi in Goa on December 2 and featured three 40-foot sailing vessels: Bulbul, Kadalpura, and Hariyal. Each of these boats was manned by crews of eight, representing the three Commands—Western, Southern, and Eastern, which also included personnel from the Andaman and Nicobar Command.

One of the noteworthy aspects of this race was the diverse composition of the sailing teams, which consisted of both male and female officers as well as sailors. In a push for inclusivity, the teams also included Agniveers, who are recruited under the Navy’s new hybrid scheme aimed at younger personnel. A Navy official remarked, “We wanted to give equal opportunity to all,” reinforcing the commitment to gender diversity and the integration of new recruits in Navy activities.

The SNC crew showcased a remarkable blend of experience and fresh talent, with two women sailors, both of whom were Agniveers, taking part in the competition. Cdr Vikas highlighted their contributions, acknowledging the steep learning curve they faced. He praised their skill and determination, stating, “Though they were very new to sailing, both of them demonstrated remarkable skill and determination, which is not only heartening but also promising for the Navy’s future plans for Agniveers.”

This victory not only enhances the reputation of the Southern Naval Command but also serves to encourage greater participation in sailing activities among Navy personnel, particularly inspiring a new generation to embrace this challenging and rewarding sport. The triumph stands as a testament to teamwork, resilience, and the spirit of adventure among the ranks of the Indian Navy.
