In a major breakthrough in an ongoing cross-border espionage investigation, the Punjab Police has arrested serving Indian Army personnel Devinder Singh for allegedly leaking classified military information to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The arrest was made on July 14 in Uri, Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir by the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), SAS Nagar.
According to AIG Ravjot Kaur Grewal, IPS, Devinder Singh, a resident of Nihalgarh in Sangrur district, played a key role in obtaining sensitive Indian Army documents while former soldier Gurpreet Singh alias Guri or Fauji was lodged in Ferozepur Jail. Gurpreet had been arrested earlier in connection with the same case for operating an ISI-linked spy network.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Devinder and Gurpreet first met in 2017 during military training in Pune and served together in various postings, including Sikkim and Jammu & Kashmir. Police suspect that Devinder continued to pass confidential information to Gurpreet during his incarceration, which was later relayed to Pakistani handlers.
On July 15, Devinder Singh was produced before a Mohali court, which granted six days of police remand. Authorities are now focused on uncovering the full scope of the espionage network, identifying possible collaborators, and tracking the movement of the leaked intelligence.
Terming the arrest a “significant success” in its campaign against anti-national activities, Punjab Police reaffirmed its commitment to protecting national security. “We remain resolute in our mission to dismantle all such networks and take the strictest action against anyone undermining India’s sovereignty,” an official statement read.
