Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, with discussions centering on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the progress of India-Russia relations.
During the call, President Putin briefed Modi on recent developments in Ukraine. Modi expressed appreciation for the detailed assessment and reaffirmed India’s consistent position advocating a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
Both leaders reviewed the state of their Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, reiterating their commitment to deepening cooperation in trade, defence, and energy sectors. Modi extended an invitation to Putin to visit India later this year for the 23rd Annual Bilateral Summit, a meeting expected to give fresh impetus to strategic and economic engagements between the two nations.
The conversation came amid active Russian diplomatic outreach. Earlier in the day, Putin discussed US proposals for Ukraine peace talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, following his meeting with Steve Witkoff, envoy of US President Donald Trump. Putin has agreed in principle to meet Trump, with the venue under consideration.
Putin also briefed Chinese President Xi Jinping on his recent talks with the US envoy, with Xi expressing support for a long-term resolution to the Ukraine conflict. These developments signal an intensifying phase of global diplomacy surrounding the war and broader strategic alignments.
