At least three people, including an eight-year-old girl and a senior citizen, were killed and 64 others injured in Karachi after celebratory aerial firing marred Pakistan’s Independence Day festivities.
According to Geo News, the young girl was struck by a stray bullet in Azizabad, while a man named Stephen lost his life in Korangi. Authorities have condemned the incidents as “reckless and dangerous” and have vowed strict action against those responsible.
Police said the firing incidents occurred across multiple parts of the city during late-night celebrations. An investigation is underway, with officers urging citizens to mark the day in safer ways.
A History of Deadly Celebrations in Karachi
Aerial firing is a recurring issue in Karachi, with at least 42 people — including five women — killed in January 2025 alone, and more than 230 injured. Many fatalities have been linked to stray bullets, robbery attempts, and violent disputes.
Pakistan celebrates Independence Day annually on August 14 with fireworks, parades, and public gatherings. However, officials warned that this year’s celebrations were overshadowed by preventable violence.
