Indian Army, NDRF and State Agencies Conduct Massive Rescue and Relief Operations After Deadly Cloudburst in Kishtwar

Indian Army’s White Knight Corps conducts large-scale rescue in Kishtwar after deadly cloudburst disrupts Machail Mata yatra; several feared dead and missing.

A sudden cloudburst in Honzar village, Kishtwar district has triggered flash floods, killing at least seven people and leaving 19 others missing, according to local authorities. The disaster has also left five critically injured, prompting a swift multi-agency response.

Rescue Operations in Full Swing

The Indian Army immediately dispatched two columns to assist civil administration in rescue efforts. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were deployed, with three more teams on standby. In addition, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team from Punjab was rushed to the site to bolster relief operations.

Due to heavy rains, some rescue activities were temporarily halted, but the Indian Army continued providing meals, rations, and medical aid to affected villagers. Officials emphasized that operations are ongoing despite challenging weather conditions.

Casualties and Government Response

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Udayabhaskar Billa confirmed, “Till now seven dead bodies have been recovered, and 17 people rescued. Out of those rescued, five are critically injured. At least 19 people are still missing.”

The Jammu & Kashmir administration announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of those who lost their lives. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with state authorities.

Other Incidents in the Region

In a separate incident, a cloudburst occurred over Amarnath in South Kashmir, but no casualties or major damage have been reported. Two SDRF teams are stationed near the cave area, with an additional team deployed from Ganderbal.
