Jaishankar and Wang Yi

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for India and China to see each other as partners rather than adversaries or threats during his two-day visit to Delhi, signaling a thaw in relations after years of tension along the disputed Himalayan border.

Wang Yi met Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, discussing bilateral issues including trade, pilgrimages, river data sharing, and ongoing boundary dispute negotiations. Wang noted, โ€œWe are happy to share that stability has now been restored at the borders,โ€ emphasizing that setbacks in recent years were not in either countryโ€™s interest.

This visit marks the second high-level meeting since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, which severely strained India-China ties. Both sides have taken steps toward normalisation, such as agreeing on patrolling arrangements, resuming border trade talks, and restoring visa services and pilgrimage access. Reports also indicate direct flights between the two countries may resume this year.

Wang Yiโ€™s visit sets the stage for Prime Minister Narendra Modiโ€™s first trip to China in seven years to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, where bilateral discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping may also take place.

Indiaโ€™s external affairs leadership stressed the need for a fair, balanced, and multipolar world order, highlighting the importance of stability in the global economy amidst changing geopolitical dynamics, including tensions with the United States.

The diplomatic engagement reflects a careful reset in India-China relations, combining border stability, economic cooperation, and strategic dialogue, while preparing for deeper engagements at the upcoming SCO Summit.
