The deceased has been identified as Pulkit Tak, a resident of Ajmer, Rajasthan. Officials said he was on duty when the incident occurred. His body was later taken to the Alipurduar District Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted or the result of another cause. Preliminary reports, however, suggest that Tak may have shot himself with his service revolver. An investigation has been launched, and further details are awaited.

Strategic Importance of Hasimara Base

The Hasimara Air Force Station is a frontline IAF base, housing advanced fighter aircraft and playing a crucial role in the eastern sector due to its proximity to the India-Bhutan border and sensitive Siliguri Corridor.

Past Incidents

This is not the first time the IAF has faced such a tragedy. In December 2024, an Air Force sergeant, Javeer Singh (36) from Haryana’s Bhiwani district, allegedly took his own life at the Maintenance Command Center in Nagpur. He was found with a gunshot wound from his service weapon, raising concerns about stress among service personnel.

Official Response

So far, IAF officials at Hasimara have refrained from making a public statement, citing the ongoing investigation. The incident has once again highlighted the need for greater focus on mental health and stress management within the armed forces.
