Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma on Wednesday carried out a comprehensive review of the security situation and counter-terrorism grid in Basantgarh, Udhampur district, a region that has witnessed heightened militant activity in recent months.
During his visit, the Army Commander was briefed by senior field commanders on the evolving operational landscape, the nature of infiltration attempts across the Line of Control (LoC), and the emerging terror threats in the hinterland. He also took stock of the measures being implemented to strengthen the intelligence network, improve coordination with local police and paramilitary forces, and reinforce the counter-infiltration grid in the sector.
Interacting with troops deployed in forward and counter-terrorism roles, Lt Gen Sharma commended their professionalism and resilience in operating under challenging conditions. He stressed the importance of maintaining the highest standards of operational readiness, vigilance, and synergy among security agencies to thwart any attempts by inimical elements to disturb peace in the region.
Basantgarh, located in the higher reaches of Udhampur, has strategic significance as it provides a corridor for militants attempting to move between Rajouri-Poonch and South Kashmir. The area has seen an uptick in militant activity and encounters over the past year, prompting security forces to further intensify operations.
The Army Commander reiterated the commitment of the Indian Army to ensuring peace and security for the local population while maintaining relentless pressure on terrorist networks. He urged troops to remain proactive and adaptable in countering the shifting tactics of adversaries and assured them of full support from higher headquarters in terms of resources and welfare.
Officials said the review forms part of the Armyโs continuous efforts to refine its operational response in Jammu and Kashmir amid changing threat perceptions, with particular focus on preventing infiltration and neutralising terror modules operating in the hinterland.
