The National Security Guard (NSG), India’s elite counter-terrorism force, has launched its Pre-Everest Expedition to Mt Satopanth (7,075 m) in the Garhwal Himalayas, marking another milestone in its legacy of endurance, resilience, and mission-readiness. The expedition, scheduled from 12 October to 4 November 2025, was flagged off by the Director General of NSG, who lauded the indomitable spirit of the “Black Cats.”
A specially trained team comprising 1 Officer and 14 Commandos will undertake this challenging ascent, designed as a preparatory mission for the NSG’s upcoming Everest Summit attempt. Such high-altitude expeditions serve not only as physical conditioning but also as crucial platforms to test mental toughness, teamwork, and operational coordination in extreme environments skills that are essential for NSG’s core mission of counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and high-risk operations.

Mt Satopanth (7,075 m) is one of the most revered and technically challenging peaks in the Garhwal region of the Indian Himalayas, located near the Badrinath shrine in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. The name Satopanth is derived from Sanskrit “Sato” meaning truth and “Panth” meaning path thus signifying the “Path of Truth.”

Known for its striking pyramidal summit and unpredictable weather conditions, Mt Satopanth is the second-highest peak in the Gangotri Group and a popular choice among seasoned mountaineers preparing for Everest. The mountain offers a mix of steep ice walls, rocky ridges, and glaciated terrain, testing climbers’ endurance and mountaineering skills at every stage.

Beyond its mountaineering appeal, Satopanth holds deep spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. According to legend, the sacred Satopanth Tal, a glacial lake near the mountain, was a resting place of the Trimurti Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva).
By choosing Satopanth for its pre-Everest expedition, the NSG aims to combine rigorous high-altitude training with the spirit of adventure and national pride a fitting testament to the elite force’s motto: “Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha” (Best Security Everywhere).
