35 NDA Cadets Hospitalised After Cross-Country

As many as 35 cadets of the National Defence Academy (NDA) were admitted to the Military Hospital in Khadakwasla after participating in the inter squadron cross-country conducted on February 20.

Most of the cadets had suffered from dehydration and muscular spasms after completing the distance of 12.5 km. Out of the 35 cadets, eight were kept under observation for a few hours at the hospital, of which two cadets are still recuperating from fractures at the hospital, NDA sources said.

Confirming the development, NDA officials said that except two cadets, all other cadets were discharged on that day itself. “The nature of the injuries was not serious and hence, they were discharged. Two cadets are still to recover as they suffered fractures,” said an official from NDA.

According to officials, this trend of a growing number of cadets seeking medical assistance after the cross-country has been observed over the last few years. A total of 1,432 cadets of 18 squadrons had participated in the competition.

Poor physical fitness of the cadets has become a matter of concern for the academy since the last few years. The previous Commandant of NDA, Air Marshal RKS Bhaduria, had openly expressed his discontent over the fitness of cadets.

He had said, “Due to the present lifestyle, the cadets are not paying much heed to their physical fitness. As a result, the academy’s instructors have to take extra efforts to mould them to bring them on par with the requirements of the academy.”

Col (Retd) Vinay Dalvi, who has done extensive research on NDA and also penned ‘Victory India’, a book on the selection and training system of the Indian armed forces, added, “During the Services Selection Board (SSB), the physical fitness of aspirants should also be checked so that he does not face any issue after joining the academy. Sadly, this criteria has been ignored for years.”

To tackle this issue, the academy has decreed that cadets optimise their fitness level before joining, for which it has laid down a specific fitness regime.

Our Armed Forces Chiefs May Earn More Than US Generals

For the first time, the Indian Army chief and his counterparts in the IAF and the Navy will draw more salary than the top general and equivalent in the US based on purchasing power parity (PPP) terms when the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission are implemented.

A comparison drawn by the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), a defence ministry think tank, on the pay packets of Army chiefs and equivalent in the US, the UK and India said a general and equivalent in the US was paid $181,500 per annum (in PPP terms). The salary in the UK for similar ranks was $269,868. In India, the three services chiefs, who enjoy pay equivalent to the Cabinet secretary, received $140,520.

If the recommendations of the 7th pay panel are implemented, the Indian Army chief’s annual salary will jump to $189,482 (in PPP terms), almost $8,000 more than what a general and equivalent ranks draw in the US. The huge salary hikes will apply equally to civilian officers too.

India’s annual per capita income is $5,833 (in PPP terms) while it is $54,630 in the US and $39,137 in the UK.

The purchasing power parity conversion factor, used worldwide to compare income levels in different countries, is “the number of units of a country’s currency required to buy the same amounts of goods and services in the domestic market as a dollar would buy in the US”.

The pay panel observed, in light of protests by the three Service chiefs asking for more money and perks, that “defence service officers and JCO/ORs in India, based on 6th CPC pay scales, are placed quite well in terms of pay, even in relation to defence personnel in countries like US and UK, where the GDP per capita in PPP terms for the country as a whole is significantly higher than that of India”.
These conclusions are, however, equally applicable to civilian employees of the government who are similarly placed. The pay panel’s analysis did not take into account the augmentation of pay being recommended by the 7th CPC.

The IDSA, an autonomous institution funded by the government, was in 2015 commissioned by the Pay Commission to study how well the military and the generals were paid.

Officers Of The Indian Army Getting Fake Messages

In a suspected case of cyber security threat, several officers of the Indian Army have received fake messages through phone messaging applications informing them that the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Officers), PCDA(O), has developed an app and the officers could access their accounts through the link in the messages.

The PCDA(O) has now issued an advisory to the officers not to open these links and clarified that no such app has been developed by the office.

The office of PCDA(O), which is located in Pune, caters to over 46,000 serving Army officers, right from the Chief of Army Staff to officers of the rank of a lieutenant, which is the first rank for the commissioned officers. According to its own website, the office looks after the pre-audit and payment of pay and allowances and all claims of officers of Indian Army.

“Laser Walls” Up For Guarding The Indo-Pak Border

Have you ever came across movie scenes in which lasers are put up so that intruders can be detected as soon as they come in its contact? Well, brace yourself for something interesting.

This is happening for real along the Indo-Pak border.

Following the Pathankot attack, about a dozen “laser walls” have been installed along the India-Pakistan international border in Punjab to tackle the unsuitable terrain and keep an eye against intruders and terrorists who try to cross over the Indian side. The functioning of these “laser walls” is being monitored through a satellite-based signal command system and armed with night and fog operability tools.

According to reports, while eight infra-red and laser beam intrusion detection systems are “up and working” at the international border near Punjab, four more will be operationalised in the next few days.

Back to Physics, a laser wall is a mechanism to detect objects which pass through the line of sight between the laser source and the detector. A laser beam over a river sets off a loud siren in case of a breach.

The “laser walls” are being monitored by the BSF. The decision to install these was taken by the BSF two years ago as barbed wire fencing could not be installed in many infiltration prone areas due to the unsupportive terrain. It was only after the Pathankot terror attack,  the Union home ministry and BSF sped up the deployment and activation of these walls along the long and winding border suspecting that the terrorists had crossed over to the Indian side from here.

According to the PTI, 45 laser walls are being planned to be installed in the areas along the international border in Punjab and Jammu and a blueprint is also prepared in this regard according to which the BSF will utilize this technology to conduct pilot project to pick up suspected movements along the international border.

Apart from these, four similar pilot projects are being taken up along the IB in Jammu, Gujrat and West Bengal in stretches of 30-40 kms, work on which will begin by next month.

Pathankot attack was an eye opener for the BSF as more than 1000 additional men have been deployed in the Punjab sector to increase ambush operations and patrolling in the area.

Lets just hope that India is always prepared to tackle situations like this in the future, unlike doing it after the terror strikes.

The eleventh India-Mongolia joint training exercise, ‘Nomadic Elephant-2016’, to promote military associations between the countries kicked off on 25th April in Mongolia. The exercise aims at promoting military associations between India and Mongolia. It will culminate on 8 May 2016.

 

Here are the 9 key points of this exercise:

  1. The Indian Army sent platoon-strength soldiers of the Kumaon Regiment. A team of two observers will also be taking part in the event.
  2. There will be about 60 personnel from the Mongolian Armed Forces who will be taking part in the exercise.
  3. The exercise will be inclusive of the specialised operations in Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism setting.
  4. The Indian contingent will share their practical experiences of Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism operations through a series of classroom lectures and outdoor demonstrations.
  5. The Indian Army’s demos will include house clearing and room intervention techniques in a hostage situation, road opening, establishing mobile check posts, intelligence gathering and drills for countering improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
  6. Both the contingents will also share their techniques of unarmed combat, specialised rappelling and participate in various sports events during the two weeks’ exchange.
  7. The event will culminate on 8th May after a 48 hours joint outdoor exercise covering specialised operations in Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism environment.
  8. This is the 11th Indo-Mongolia exercise. India and Mongolia held their first joint exercise in 2004 and the joint drills are being held every year. After 2005, the next drill was conducted in Mongolia in 2008.

National Defence Academy To Reintroduce BTech Courses For Its Cadets

The National Defence Academy (NDA) has got the final approval for introducing BTech courses for its cadets from June this year. The Chief of Staff Committee, who advises the government and ensures jointsmanship in the armed forces, has given a nod to the NDA to kick off the new course.

The course will be implemented in two phases – in phase I Naval cadets of the 136th course (which will start in the month of June) will pursue the course and in the second phase Army and Air Force cadets will be allowed to pursue the course only after getting approval from the respective headquarters of the forces.

Confirming this development, NDA PRO Lt Commander Shibu Devasia told Sakal Times that Naval cadets of the 136th course will initially pursue the course. “We expect a strength of around 30 to 40 cadets in the first batch of the course,” he added.

These cadets will study the course for three years at the NDA and the final two semesters will be completed at the respective finishing academies. The BTech degree will be given in three streams – Mechanical, Electronics and Telecommunication and Computer Science.

“The academic syllabus has been approved by JNU while the All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE), after examining the infrastructure at the academy, gave their go-ahead for the course,” Devasia said.

On the onset of the course, the recruitment of lecturers, civilian staff and improvement in the infrastructure will be done by the academy, NDA sources said. The academy is a tri-services training academy and cadets join after Class XII. Presently, after completing a three-year training, the cadets are awarded a BA or BSc degree.

Thereafter, these cadets go for a year to the Indian Military Academy (IMA) at Dehradun, INA at Ezhimala and the Air Force Academy (AFA) at Dundigul for their advanced training of their respective force. Interestingly, way back in 2012, the academy had started BTech courses and 350 cadets from 127th course had joined but it had to shut as they could not get requisite approval from concerned authorities.
