Meet Lt Col AG Rangaraj, First Indian Army PARA Commando

0

The first Indian airborne formation was the 50th Parachute Brigade raised on 29 October 1941, consisting of 151 British, 152 Indian, and 153 Gurkha parachute battalions alongside other support units.

Lt. (later Col.) AG Rangaraj, MVC, of the Indian Medical Service and RMO of the 152 Indian Para battalion, became the first Indian along with Havildar Major Mathura Singh to make a parachute descent. In 1942-43, the formation saw limited action at Nara against Pathan tribals in the North-West Frontier Province and conducted some intelligence-gathering missions in Burma, utilizing their somewhat limited airborne capabilities. Later, in March 1944, less the British battalion (which was transferred to Britain and renamed the 156th Para battalion and formed part of the 4th Parachute Brigade of the 1st Airborne Division), the brigade, less 154 Gurkha Para battalion, saw extensive action at Sangshak and later in the Imphal Plains on the Burmese border against two reinforced Japanese divisions. 154 Gurkha Para battalion had not completed its air training, so stayed back to attain the airborne status.

60 Parachute Field Ambulance was raised as 60 Indian Field Ambulance on 10th August 1942 in Secunderabad and saw action in Burma as a part of 2 Indian Air Borne Division. The performance of the Unit in these operations led to its selection for para duties. It was converted to Para Field Ambulance in 1945. In August 1946 a detachment ADS participated in Operation-HATYA, as a first Indian Air Borne task, to help flood victims in Hatya, an island in the Bay of Bengal. SIXTY also served with distinction during the Kashmir operations of 1948-49, where it raised and maintained the famous ‘CARIAPPA HOSPITAL’.

SIXTY became part of 50 (1) Para Brigade in 1950. It was sent to Korea to join the United Nations Forces in November,1950 as a part of the Commonwealth Division. SIXTY took part in a difficult Air Borne operation, ‘Tomhawak with 187 RCF of United States Army at Munsani in Korea. Two Maha Vir Chakras, six Vir Chakras, One Bar to Vir Chakra and 25 Mention-in-Despatches were bestowed upon the Unit in Korea. Lt Col. A.G. Rangaraj MVC who commanded the Unit in Korea is also the First Indian Paratrooper.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad presented the Presidential Trophy to SIXTY on 10 March 1955 in recognition of noble work done in Korean Campaign.

In 1961 the SIXTY took part in Operation VIJAY in Goa and in the Indo-Pak conflict of 1965.

Indian army doctor (AMC: 1941), he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra (1951) for bravery in Korea, as part of the UN Peace Keeping Force. A specialist on smallpox, he was later a Senior Adviser to WHO in Afghanistan (1969) and the Gulf (1978).

Is there anyone, anywhere who hasn’t heard of MASH?

When its TV run ended in 1983, the final show was the most-watched television episode in history.

But there’s a remarkable MASH unit hardly anyone here knows of. What a pity. Their raw courage is right out of  the most harrowing war movie.

Except that the heros in this real-life saga never came within a million miles of Hollywood. They were Indians … as in, India.

They were members of the 60th Para Field Ambulance … medics who were also parachutists, who jumped into combat alongside the fighting infantry. These MASH men of the 60th were not the boozy, skirt-chasing, wise-cracking cynics of the TV show.

When the Korean War broke out, recently-independent India opted not to send combat forces, but instead would contribute a crack medical team … the 60th Para, which had served in Burma against the Japanese, It was commanded by a veteran, Lieut-Col A.G. Rangaraj, reputedly the first member of the Indian army to earn his parachutists wings, earlier in World War 2. (The photos below are from India’s official account of the 60th’s Korean War experiences).

Lt-Col A.G. Rangaraj
60th Para CO, Lt-Col A.G. Rangaraj

The 60th Para arrived in Korea in Nov, 1950, composed of  346 men,  including four combat surgeons, two anaesthesiologists and a dentist.

When the Chinese swarmed through UN lines in November 1950, the 60th had to evacuate its position. But they had no transport and were reluctant to abandon their medical equipment. They stumbled across an ancient steam locomotive, formed bucket brigades to fill the boilers with water, and loaded up the train. Two soldiers (with zero previous train experience), got it all running and chugged across the last bridge south  before it was blown. They don’t teach that in medical school or army staff colleges..

Colonel Rangaraj’s logic was: they were specifically trained for mountain operations such as they found in Korea, and had first class equipment for such work. It would have been a great pity to leave it all behind. “We would have been of little use without it,” he said later, “ and could not afford to lose it.”

The Indian medics stuck with the troops they were treating during the horrific rearguard fighting that winter. Three times in three days they set up and then closed down their dressing stations as they tried to find safety, refusing to abandon the wounded.

Later, in March ’51, in the second biggest airborne operation in the war, Operation Tomahawk, a dozen medics of the 60th parachuted in behind the lines with 4,000 US troops. Rangaraj was among them.

Casualties were heavy. A U.S.commander said: “I was immediately struck by the (Indians’) efficiency. That small unit, adapted for an airborne role, has carried out 103 operations. which is quite outstanding for that type of unit … probably 50 of those operated (on) owed their lives to those men.”

60th Para behind enemy lines, with US troops and POWs, Operation Tomahawk
The freezing wounded were lying in the open. The Indian medics dug trenches to shelter them and covered them with parachute silk to keep them warm.

It was typical 60th Para valour. In September, 1951, while attached to Commonwealth troops, they treated 448 casualties in six days of fighting. A month later they evacuated (under fire) another 150 wounded. In many other clashes later they were still in the thick of  it. The Indians saved hundreds of wounded.para-commando-col-rangaraj
In all, they treated about 200,000 wounded. … which included  2,300 field medical operations … and in the meantime, also trained local Korean doctors and nurses.

The 60th  Para received many decorations from their own country, and from South Korea, the UN, a US Bronze Star, and a unit citation from Douglas MacArthur. India also issued a postage stamp in tribute to their heroism. (Has Canada ever made such a gesture specifically honouring any of  our army’s Korean feats?)

The 60th served in Korea for three and a half years, until February 1954, the longest single tenure of any unit in the entire war.

It is quite an outfit with quite the history. Wounded Canadian Korean vets, some from Kapyong,  have told me of their great admiration for the Indian medical teams who helped save their lives. It says something about the myopic way we teach history that this unit’s thrilling story is so little known.

We thank Major Poonia sir for letting us know about this great soldiers and helped us to write about it for Indian armed forces fans and aspirants. This story and pictures are collected from different sources.

Recommended For Indian Army TES Entry In 4th Attempt

2
recommended-for-indian-army-tes

Why you should never give up! Recommended in my 4th attempt! My name is ROHIT GHOSH, I recently got recommended. For the army technical entry in my 4th attempt and I would like to tell you all about my journey. But first Here is the list of ssb’s I have been for :

  • NDA-NA on 23/01/2016 at 33 SSB,BHOPAL(CONFERENCE OUT)
  • 10+2 B.TECH NAVY on 11/08/2016 at NSB(v), VISAKHAPATNAM(CONFERENCE OUT)
  • NDA-NAVY on 19/08/2016 at 33 SSB,BHOPAL(CONFERENCE OUT)
  • 10+2 B.TECH ARMY on 03/09/2016 at 17 SSB,BANGALORE (RECOMMENDED) {Finally}

I feel extremely proud as well as elated on getting recommended and that is the reason for me writing this article. This is specially for those who have been there, so close to reaching it but still somehow have not been able to make it. (THE SO CALLED “REPEATERS”). Well, the best advice from me to you is to please never give up and never lose hope. Getting conference out once or twice may be disheartening for you. I have been conf out thrice and that too twice in a matter of 2 weeks. It feels awful, you would feel that “this is it” ,”I’m not going again” but remember that one chance is enough for your selection and making your dream come true J. Take some time out to read this long article and I’m sure you’ll be happy and motivated.

So, after getting conf. out twice in 14 days, I was having doubts on attending my army tech ssb at Bangalore, it would be my 4th attempt and people told me about how greater amount of the chances you have availed, the difficult it becomes for your selection.( all bullshit!, trust me on that!).So, first thing I did was to brush up on GK, very imp a strong hold on GK and current topics will always get you an upper hand for your selection. Apart from GK, you should always be prepared on questions about your family history, parents, grandparents ,their strengths, weaknesses everything. Now for the 5 days at Bangalore.

DAY ‘0’: Reporting at 2:00 PM at BANGALORE railway station. Train was late, but so was the ssb bus :p got it, reached by 6:00.Document verification etc etc was done.

DAY’1’:   SCREENING DAY:

OIR went very well.Did all the questions with ease.

(TIP: brush up on your speed using practice questions available in any ssb book/guide. Do easy questions first if you are not getting an answer leave and move ahead quickly.). Try doing all, even if you do not know at least attempt there is no negative marking as such.

In PPDT a picture of 3 persons was shown.I made a simple story about a conversation between a sports coach and students about inter school activities.

(TIP:make simple and effective stories which is realistic and practically possible)

Now,it was time for the group discussion and 1 thing I was sure about was on getting screened in.; I had never been screened out before and went with the same belief and confidence, narrated my story the best in the group and gave 2 valid and good points to take group ahead. RESULT= Got screened in!. 44 of us were screened in. I was given chest number 43( gave me Goosebumps though, they called my chest number so late) (TIP: GD is not about who can speak much and shouting, please Don’t shout for no reason and at the same time do not remain numb and quiet. Speak assertively but to take the group ahead and go with the majority.)

Then we had to fill the PIQ form, just be honest about it, even if you’re writing something false remember that false thing :P. It will help in interview.

DAY’2’: THE PSYCH DAY:

This was the day for the psychological tests. Everything went well.I did 12 TAT, 60 WAT.I suggest practicing by taking pictures and words from newspapers for TAT AND WAT.(WARNING: DO NOT PRACTICE SRT’S WITH SOLUTIONS!).SRT’s should depict your natural reaction and thus I believe you should not practice for it but you should not waste time on thinking, just do what comes first in your mind! The biggest mistakes people do is in your self-description. Completing anywhere from 45-60 srt’s is more than acceptable. I could do 51, which were my honest and spontaneous reactions.

There is no need to write mind-boggling words describing how hard-working efficient you are. Please,do not write like this.Genuinely ask your parents, friends and teachers. Sit and think for some time. Write everything down.Yes,do learn and go but not what is false.

(TIP: [1] I HAVE A HELPFUL NATURE.

[2] I ALWAYS HELP MY PARENTS WITH HOUSEHOLD WORK.

Which response would you rather believe in? (1) or (2)?

This is what I’m trying to say, write in terms of your actions which depicts your abilities and strengths rather than blabbering about them and writing an honest SD will help you in interview. If he says to describe yourself narrate your SD, If he asks weakness and strengths again narrate your SD part.)

DAY’3’: GTO-DAY 1

It was now time for the GTO tasks series, which I believe can make or break your recommendation. So,enjoy it thoroughly and be as natural as possible forgot about whatever you have learned or remembered from your coaching.Use your own “brains” and “common sense”!

First was GD, two topics were given we chose to have a GD on DEVELOPMENT IN WHICH SECTOR IS MOST ESSENTIAL FOR OUR COUNTRY? IS IT :

(1)FARMING SECTOR

(2)IT SECTOR

(3)EDUCATION

I Felt farming sector is important and spoke on it. I only spoke for 2 times in the whole GD but gave good and factual points.

Second topic was IF GIVEN A CHOICE WHICH SUBJECTS WOULD YOU REMOVE IN 8TH,9TH,10TH STANDARDS TO RELIEVE STRESS FROM A STUDENTS LIFE?

(1)ONE OF THE SCIENCE SUBJECTS

(2)ONE OF THE LANGUAGE SUBJECTS

(3)MATHS

I again only spoke twice about removing science(xP) but gave full support and reasons for it.(TIP: GD is not about how much you can speak, speaking more is good but speaking more about irrelevant information will cause more harm than good. FOR eg; In this GD one of my group mate initiated the discussion saying as to “how there is no stress on students and I have managed my studies and sports and so can everyone. So we should not remove any subject” NO! PLEASE! This is not required, just give your views about what among the three according to you can be done instead of going into deep analysis!) .

GPE went very well, go with the majority think of the simplest and most convenient way keeping time into consideration. In GD go with what the majority says, just keep adding points to your plan(GOOD POINTS!).

PGT: This is the part where I believe most of the problem lies, everyone wants to showcase their ideas but you gotta be quick and decisive, be ahead of everyone else always volunteer to go ahead without any fear and frequently give ideas. If someone has an idea help him in implementing it and everything would be fine!(TIP: Don’t just go there saying ”I have an idea” and end up trying it out there doing nothing. Only speak if you have an idea otherwise help others. Always try basic things first like directly keeping the plank etc. sometimes there will be structures given just to fool you and you can move ahead just by simple planking. Watch out for that! Like always use your common sense and enjoy the task).

All other tasks like HGT,PGT use the same logic there too.

Now talking about lecturette like I said having a strong hold of GK will definitely help you here as well as the GD and you should also be prepared about  the common issues plaguing our country. My lecturette topics were

(1)AMARTYA SEN [DAMN!]

(2)UNSUNG WAR HEROES[ 1 ka bhi naam nhi pta :P]

(3)GDP[knew nothing except it’s abbreviation]

(4)INTERNET AGE[yes!]

So, I spoke on INTERNET AGE, spoke well for 3 mins full used modulation while speaking and looked at all my mates!(TIP: speak sense and something which is not to common using proper voice modulation, make it interesting it fetches more attention). For individual obstacles playing every day is enough!

DAY’4’: GTO-DAY 2

Got up at 6:00 , got ready by 6:45 went and was made to sit till 10:00! After which our command tasks started, one by one we were called. Now, it was my turn I had a moderately difficult Command task(was actually happy to see it that it was not easy!).GTO had a small chat with me then I called my sub-ordinates did it with 2-3 mins remaining with some comedy in between(:P).(TIP: You should not tremble after seeing a hard command task, you should actually feel happy and encouraged because the GTO will give you a hard task only if he holds you in high regard based on your performance in PGT and HGT.)

I also had my PI(PERSONAL INTERVIEW) today. It lasted for about 30 mins. I was asked about my personal life, I knew every damn thing about myself and my family! I answered everything confidently. I was also asked about the army and certain current affairs and GK. I was thoroughly prepared about that and gave all answers except one concerning the Nagaland issue.I could see how I had made a mark on him and he was trying to put pressure on me by acting as if he was not interested, yawning deliberately in between etc etc. DO NOT FALL FOR THESE! Continue being cheerful and confident while giving your answers. I was asked as to why I could not make it in my previous attempts, to which I honestly said “SIR, I was always afraid of the results and that is why I could not show my true qualities and give my best performance.” Then he asked,”So You’re not afraid this time?” “NOT AT ALL”  I said J .(TIP: Be confident, prepared about your family and yourself along with GK. DO not show nervousness and anxiety. Rest all will be fine!)

DAY’5’: CONFERENCE DAY:

Finally, the conference day, no big deal. 90% of your fate is decided by this time and I was fairly confident about my result this time although the fear of getting conference out was haunting me :p. None the less first we were given an inspiring and motivating speech by a colonel about how this is not the end of life and you could still come again or do something great elsewhere. But to be honest I didn’t care, Armed forces are where I want to be! After the speech, they decided to call us from behind! ……(TIP: Be smart and confident. Do not shiver or show signs of anxiousness seeing those officers. I know “darr lagta hai, but dikhao mat usko :P”)

So first went chest number 44( A very good friend of mine, knew him since childhood! + he was already recommended). He came back within a min or two. Now, A discussion was going on about me inside. Wrong! Nothing, within 30 secs I was called inside! I was asked about my stay, which all places I visited, which place I liked the most! That’s it! Again, hardly 30 secs. I knew(ab toh aar ya paar hai!). My conference was very short, I was having doubts but still had that self-confidence. We went for tea, then our lunch,long-long process of giving back our mobiles, taking our chest numbers. Our conference finished at around 10:00 and now we were finally taken into the hall for our results at 13:30! Sitting there I started thinking This is my time! Someone came, started announcing the results “Gentlemen I will call out the chest numbers, You will shout your name..”recommended-for-indian-army-tes

44(He got recommended again),13,21…… 8 more followed without my chest number. I thought Not happening this time too, Then came chest number 43 ( YES! THAT WAS MY NUMBER!) Tears started flowing through my eyes…I somehow managed to stand shout my name and come out. Lastly chest number 37 was called and 12 of us were recommended.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

This is something I leave you to find out on your own.

SHOULD YOU JOIN A COACHING ACADEMY?

Well, It’s not bad to join a coaching academy but you should choose a very good one, which trains you, guides you rather than gives you coaching and spoils your mind. Especially for freshers, First chance is the golden chance MAKE IT COUNT! So, I suggest OLIVE GREENS, Chandigarh as a Training center, they’ll make sure you’ll not learn anything there but know what it takes to become an officer! Decide cautiously any academy will be ok!

Medicals will follow after recommendation Mine were completed and now I’m waiting for the merit list.

Finally, From all ssb’s whether you get recommended or not, you learn something. Use it in your next ssb and always improve upon your mistakes and enjoy your stay and the beauty of the ssb selection procedure. If you have it in you, you will surely reach there sooner or later. J JAI HIND!

7 Mostly Asked Comprehensive Questions In SSB Interview

0
ssb-questions

SSB is the combination of three testing techniques, which accesses your mind, words, and actions are matched. The easiest of them is the personal interview.

But still, it seems to be perceived as a tough part due to the lack of proper handling by the candidates.

The personal interview is candidate oriented and it is always advised to present a comprehensive answer to the questions of the IO. Some of the obviously asked questions that need time to explain are given below.

  1. Tell Me Something About Yourself – It is mostly asked at the beginning of the question and needs tough mental activity in order to reply to the basics of yourself. It must cover the overview of your personality and has to be in comprehensive form rather than point form. Get brief of this question on How To Answer “Tell Me About Yourself”
  2. What Have You Done Here Till Your Arrival – Your observation is all that matters in handling this question. Right from your reporting to the time before your interview, you have to give an overview of the things that happened to you like documentation, opening speech, etc.
  3. Tell me you’re Daily Routine – Candidates can prepare this question. It is always said that it is better to perform and handle the situation, rather than imagine and making a fake experience. So make a routine, follow it and you will find it easy to describe it in the form of the IO.
  4. Rapid Fire – Rapid fire is a set of questions asked in the continuity to check the grasping power of the candidate and the respective ability of the candidate to respond to those questions. The only way to handle this question is to practice for it and try to improve your memory to remember the sequence of 6-7 questions and answer them. Some commonly asked questions in rapid-fire are SSB Interview Rapid Fire Questions
  5. Tell Me About Your Sports Activities And The Sport You Usually Play – This question needs deep knowledge of the sport that you usually play. You have to start from your participation and achievement and move to the basic knowledge of it. To face this question, candidates must prepare for this by rehearsing their participation and achievements and staying aware of the basics of you the sport.
  6. What Are The Preparations That You Have Done For This SSB? – This question needs prior preparation and deep analysis of the efforts that you have done for SSB. The major part of this question revolves around your introspection and your steps to overcome them. Improving your communication skills, enhancing your writing skills, etc. can be mentioned here as per the candidate’s personality. Candidates should stay ready to face the counter questions.
  7. Tell Me About Your Relation With Your Parents And Siblings – This question is for revealing your emotional and behavioral connections with your parents and siblings. You should mention your productive and quality time with your family and what you usually do for them and what is your contribution and responsibilities to them.

How To Join Indian Armed Forces Using NCC ‘C’ Certificate?

7
ncc-c-certificate

The National Cadet Corps is one of the largest military reserve forces of India. NCC is open to all school/college going students to be enrolled in any of the nearest NCC unit. The NCC gives a vast array of opportunities to students which would either be impossible to get outside or will cost you a huge fortune. In addition to this, NCC ‘C’ certificate holder can directly go to the SSB interview, skipping the Common Entrance Exam (CEE).

Here’s how you can join the Armed Forces using NCC ‘C’ certificate:

  1. All the three services of the military have some vacancies reserved for the NCC cadets:
    1. Indian Military Academy, Dehradun –   64
    2. Officers Training Academy, Chennai –   100
    3. Indian Navy in Indian Naval Academy       –   6 per course
    4. Indian Air Force in Air Force Academy –   10% in all courses, including flying training courses
  2. You need to have a minimum 3 years of service in any of the three wings of NCC to be eligible to write ‘C’ certificate exam.
  3. In your ‘C’ certificate exam, get a ‘B’ grade (though ‘B’ and ‘C’ grade don’t have any value, so try to get ‘A’ grade).
  4. To join the army, apply for NCC Special Entry Scheme through your directorate – ask your unit CO to forward your application to the directorate which will then forward it to the recruiting directorate. If you get shortlisted, follow the procedure of SSB interview. All the vacancies through this are to be filled by NCC cadets. How To Join Indian Armed Forces Using NCC ‘C’ Certificate?
  5. To join the Navy and Air Force, there isn’t any special entry but the entries which are published from time to time have some vacancies reserved for NCC ‘C’ certificate holders. You just need to mention in your application that you have an NCC ‘C’ certificate.
  6. Although the cadets of Air Wing and Naval Wing have some vacancies in Air Force and Navy respectively, they can apply for NCC Special Entry Scheme to join the army.
  7. But the cadets who are from Army Wing are not eligible for the vacancies in the Air Force or the Navy.
  8. So, it is best to either opt for Air Wing or Naval Wing over Army Wing depending on your first preference. In my case, I wish to join the Air Force, so I have opted for Air Wing over Naval and Army. Though Naval Wing’s NCC vacancies are out of bound for me, I am still eligible to join the Army through Special Entry Scheme.
  9. Although for Air Force, you need to apply within 12 months of leaving NCC (along with AFCAT or CDSE), you can apply for others as long as you have the age limit.
  10. You will be awarded extra marks in your SSB as follows:
Certificate Army Navy Air Force
A 5% addl marks on overall marks scored in SSB  +22 marks in SSB +3 marks in SSB
B 8% Same as above +44 marks in SSB +4 marks in SSB
C 10% same + no written exam +66 marks in SSB +5 marks in SSB

*At least 50-60% marks in graduation needed for C certificate to be applicable. C Cert alone would not have any value.

  • Age limits would be as per the notification  and date of commencement of the training for a particular course.
  • One can apply for PC from SSC through internal procedures.

14 Things Only Military Brats Would Understand

1
14-things-only-military-brats-would-understand

Military brats are a unique breed. We deal with situations that our civilian friends sometimes find weird. All because we are son/daughter of a man in uniform. Being a military brat is awesome and tough at the same time. There’s a lot that goes into explaining things to others. Here are 50 things only a military brat would understand:

  1. The question of Where are you from?

Okay, what do you want to listen? Where was I born? Or where was I bought up? Or where did I spent my childhood?

  1. It’s natural for you to stand up during the national anthem:

I still remember my friends’ look when I stood up for the national anthem during India-Pakistan cricket world cup.

  1. You’ve learned to sleep through the sounds of morning PT, gunfire, etc:

Because you don’t want to get up at 3:30 in the morning.

  1. You rarely fully unpack:

Because you’ve already have necessary items handy. Also, you would need to repack anyhow on dad’s next posting.

  1. Figuring Out the Best School You Went To:

Because you’ve already studied in a dozen of them by your twelfth.

  1. The immediate bond with another military brat:

“OMG, you’re an army brat too?!” Got someone who could understand what I speak now.

  1. People give you a blank look when you try to explain the difference between a unit, company, battalion, etc

Especially to your civilian friends.

  1. You had an awesome childhood:

…and would never trade that for anything in the world.

  1. Is Your Sibling Born in the Same State:

This is the follow up if you somehow encounter the first question.

  1. You know that no matter where your father is posted, there’s a good chance you’ll be happy moving with him.

All the emotional farewell crap is not new to you.

  1. The Debate of Military VS Civilian Hospital for the Birth:

So, this one’s pretty rare, but we do have ourselves asked at least once whether we were born in a military hospital or a civilian one.

  1. Calling everyone “Sir” or “Saab” is not new to you

And you don’t even feel anything when your father does it everytime, even on their back…

  1. The Ticket Prices for Military Travels:

Yes, that’s a plus point.

  1. After telling someone your father is in the Air Force or Naval Aviation or Army Aviation Corps, you’re ready for the inevitable follow-up question of “Is he a pilot?”

Because you know everyone in the military aviation is not a pilot.

Have you come across more such experiences as a fauji brat? Let us know.
