US Army Allows Women In Combat Role In-Line With Indian Counterparts

0
US Army Allows Women In Combat Role

In a historic move, the U.S. Army has now allowed women to be assigned combat roles. The announcement was made two months after India opened all combat roles to women. 22 women army officers will now serve as Second Lieutenants in the US Army after being commissioned in the next few weeks.

Among them, 13 women have been approved to become Armor Officers and 9 are approved for infantry service.

Earlier in February, India has announced women to be allowed to occupy combat roles in all sections of its army, navy and air force, indicating a radical move to gender parity in one of the world’s most-male dominated professions.

President Pranab Mukherjee announced the move after the Republic Day celebrations of 2016 while addressing both houses of the parliament before the budget session. He told that the government would in the future recruit women for fighting roles in India’s armed forces.

India, which has one of the largest armies in the world, has until recently resisted following suit, citing concern over women’s vulnerability if captured and over their physical and mental ability to cope with the stress of frontline deployments.

India began recruiting women to non-medical positions in the armed forces in 1992, yet only 2.5 percent of its more than one million personnel are female – most of them administrators, intelligence officers, doctors, nurses or dentists.US Army Allows Women In Combat Role

While most countries employ women in various roles in their armed forces, only a handful – including Australia, Germany, Israel and now, the United States – have allowed them to take on combat or fighting roles.

This new opening for women in the US Army came after US Defence Secretary Ash Carter said the organization had decided to eliminate gender barriers to women.

This would definitely put an end to the gender bias in the armed forces around the world and enhance selection of the best of the warriors depending on their skills & capability and not their hormones.

Exercise Shatrujeet: 8 Points To Know

0
Exercise Shatrujeet

Exercise Shatrujeet in being conducted in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan to evaluate the capability of the Army to strike deep into enemy territory in an integrated air-land battle environment. The Army undertakes such exercises at regular intervals at different levels to ensure forces are provided war-like situations and kept in high-state of battle readiness. This exercise is being considered to be a part of India’s Cold Start Doctrine.

Here are the 8 points to know about this exercise:

  1. The exercise started on 16th April and will be concluded on April 23.
  2. Exercise Shatrujeet is undertaken by Mathura-based Strike 1 corps which is one of the three principle strike corps of the Army.
  3. This exercise will involve participation of several Infantry, armoured and artillery formations under a simulated nuclear, biological, chemical warfare environment.Exercise Shatrujeet
  4. The formation and units under the corps have been undergoing the training for past two months and this is the last phase of exercise. Post-preparatory training manoeuvres at subordinate units and formation level, the Strike 1 is now poised to conduct integrated operational manoeuvres to validate its operational plans in simulated high tempo battlefield environment and terrain.
  5. The exercise focuses on “validating integrated battle theatre fighting concept”. This will incorporate drills using new-age technologies, weapon platforms and systems as well as long range precision targeting vectors.
  6. The exercise holds utmost importance for the Army as a threat from Pakistan’s 60-km Hatf-IX missiles is expected anytime. Exercise Shatrujeet will aim to fine-tune the strategy to tackle the threat.
  7. To add teeth to the strategy, the exercise will also see major airborne operations, including para-dropping of around 3,000 soldiers!
  8. Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag will review the final phase of the exercise.

About Cold Start Doctrine: It involves the various formations of India’s military conducting offensive operations against enemy (particularly Pakistan). It would involve limited, rapid armoured thrusts, with infantry and necessary air support. Under it, the offensive operations must begin within 48 hours after orders have been issued. Such a limited response time would enable Indian forces to surprise their enemy. It is intended to allow India’s conventional forces to perform holding attacks in order to prevent a nuclear retaliation from the enemy. And since India’s no-first-use policy on Nuclear weapons is clear, this doctrine comes to the rescue when enemy takes the big step.

Navy Women To Be Up For Combat Roles On Warships

0
indian navy women

Women officers may soon be aboard the Indian Navy’s warships as the Navy is working out a policy in this regard. According to Defence sources, the Navy is working on the modalities to allow women officials on board its warships.

Earlier, in 2008, the government decided to grant permanent commission to short service commission women officers in those arms of the three services that “do not entail direct combat or the possibility of physical contact with the enemy”.

Following this, the Indian Navy has allowed seven of its short service commission women officers a permanent commission in the force which enabled them to serve till they retired. Navy is the last of the three armed forces in the country to allow permanent commission to women.

Now, the Navy is considering its women officers for combat roles on its warships.

This is the second major step towards enabling women officers to serve in combat roles after the IAF decided last year to allow its women officers to serve as fighter pilots on “experimental basis” for five years. This made IAF the first of the three forces to allow women in combat role, now followed by the Navy.

Defence sources said women officers in the Navy will have to meet at least four conditions for permanent commission for the combat roles, including medical fitness and a good annual confidential report. Women officers will also have to opt for permanent commission at the start of their service.

According to Commodore BK Munjal, the living conditions in ships are entirely different. They are now modifying ships and designing them as per the conditions required for women officers. The Navy has made some structural design changes to its newly built warships to provide accommodation for women officials and modification is underway to the already inducted ships.

The government said starting 2017, women will be eligible to join as pilots of reconnaissance planes in the Navy, one of the eight branches to be opened up to female officers.

Women were first inducted in the Military in 1927 in the Nursing Service and in the Medical officers’ cadre in 1943. They were enabled to join the armed forces in 1992 on short service commissions.

Though the clear figures are not known yet, the Indian Air Force currently has the highest number of women officers at 1,350, followed by the Army with 1,300 and Navy with about 500.

Besides the Navy, the Army is working on a proposal to give more responsibility to its women officials, but not in the direct combat role. The Army may soon consider women for combat roles too in the near future.

This could set a global trend for the induction of women in combat roles in the male-dominated militaries of the world.

More power to you, lady warriors!
