Over 6 lac applicants apply for NDA exam every six months. Admission rate in NDA is as low as there are chances to book a train ticket on IRCTC website. India’s “Most Ambitious” missile, codenamed K-4 was recently test-fired from the nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant somewhere in Bay of Bengal. Various news agencies have accessed the first images of this secretive weapon system that has almost never been seen before in flight.

The missile was fired from around 20 metres under water from the submarine and it hit the target after covering 700 kms distance. In its full capability, the K-4 can strike targets up to a range of 3500 kms.

About the K-4 missile:

  1. Although the missile is yet to get its actual name, it was being developed under a secret project, code named K-4, which is part of the K-family of missiles, a series of Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs).
  2. K-4 is capable of carrying nuclear warheads. It is named after the Missile Man of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
  3. The K-4 SLBM has a range of 3,500 km.
  4. The missile is 10-12 metres long and 1.3 metres wide with a solid-fuelled engine.
  5. It weighs 17-20 tonnes and can carry a nuclear payload of up to 2,000 kg.
  6. The missile was developed exclusively for INS Arihant, as the Agni-III missile could not be fitted in the submarine.
  7. K-4 is indeed a derivative of the Agni ballistic nuclear missiles already in service. This will make K-4 the most potent part of India’s nuclear deterrent.
  8. INS Arihant can carry 12 smaller K-15 missiles or four larger K-4 missiles.
  9. The DRDO, which developed this missile also have plans to develop three more K-series missiles. This includes the K-5 missile which will have a strike range of more than 5,000 km capable of hitting targets deep inside China.
  10. While the K-4 missile has more developmental trials before being inducted in the armed forces, its shorter version 750-km range K-15 (renamed as B-05) is ready for induction.

The missile test is being seen as a huge step forward for country’s nuclear weapons programme and strategic deterrent. Before India’s K-4 missile launch, only United States, Russia, China and France could successfully launch an undersea nuke-powered ballistic missile.

Here are some lesser known facts about military dogs in India:

  1. Like the soldiers, they too undergo rigorous training of their level and only some of them make it through while others are rejected.
  2. The army dogs are no ordinary pets as their history is full of valiant tales. The fact that Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC) is decorated with a Shaurya Chakra and close to 150 commendation cards is reason enough to prove their worth.
  3. Army has around 1,000 trained dogs in its ranks. The task to maintain the strength is assigned to RVC.
  4. The army dogs are integral part of search and rescue operations where they have to assist in recovering explosives. Without them, the search operations would be at a stand-still.
  5. They are taught to respond to military-specific hand gestures and even verbal orders by their handlers.
  6. While undergoing extensive military training, the dogs are coached in commands that require them to hold their barks in situations of combat, in order not to reveal their position to the enemy.
  7. An army dog squad had participated in Republic Day parade after 26 years in 2016. The RVC Centre and College in Meerut Cantt had put in great effort to prepare the squad for the march past.
  8. The most preferred army dogs are the German Shepherd and Labradors because of their natural ability to adapt to any training schedule. They are easy to train and have the special ability to perform the tasks required by the army.
  9. Their service lasts anywhere from 8-10 years (ambiguous).
  10. As soon as they retire from service, they are euthanized. The army finds it expensive to maintain their post military care. Risk is also of their knowledge on sensitive locations being revealed to enemies.

But every time, after trying it for a day or two, it came to me as easy as was the previous routine. The thing to focus here is to stop complaining and start doing. Every problem is not solved by mere bragging about it. You need to push your limits to achieve something and as the saying goes “No Pain, No Gain”, there should not be any complain either.
  6. Live for yourself: Do not do something only because you want someone to impress with it. Do whatever you are doing for yourself keeping in mind the goals and its outcomes. People will automatically get impressed with this attitude of yours.
  7. Self-Motivation and Calmness: Motivation is not what anyone always gives you around. In cases, you need to be calm under pressure and be your own motivator. Thinking back to a previous failure can provide the motivation to keep going. In cases, time may also act as a motivator but it’s always better to be done before the time limit.
  8. Stop Forecasting: Finally, stop publishing every high and low of your life on your social media profile. It will just be an entertainment to others will you will hardly feel better about it. With the NDA exam being concluded recently, the next step for NDA aspirants is to start preparing for the SSB. No matter how your performance was in the exam, you need to start preparing for the interview from right now. There is no Shubh Muhurat for this. The earlier you start, the better you get at OLQs.

The first and foremost thing to make up your mind is the fact to remember that you are not competing with other candidates, which is a major misconception to many. All of you will be assessed against a common standard of suitability called the OLQs and it is possible for everyone in a group to be recommended or to not be recommended.

Here is what you can do to start your preparations and crack the NDA SSB interview:

  1. First things first, keep in mind the complete procedure of SSB; about what you are expected to do there.
  2. Identify your strengths: Some of the core traits to consider are: Leadership skills, teamwork, communication skills, initiative and creativity, organisational ability and a positive attitude. Introspect yourself and the areas you need to develop and work accordingly.

  8. Body language should be positive and relaxed. Not sloppy and tired. You must be active and energetic for the interview.
  9. Eye contact is the first thing that is going to happen with interviewers. Hence, eye contact should be normal and you should always shake hands with them.
  10. When you are going for the interview, dress formally. Do not wear informal clothes as it looks unprofessional. Avoid using perfumes or deodorant with strong smell as it distracts the attention of assessors. Attire must match your personality. If you are dark then wear light colored clothes, if you are fair then you can wear dark colored clothes.
  11. Your mind should be open without any negativity. It is easy to overcome negative thoughts so have an open mind.
  12. Never assume that you can crack SSB just preparing overnight. It is a long process and you have to give due time. Being consistent and determined is the key to success.
