AFSB Group Discussion: ‘Panama Papers’

0
panama-papers-group-discussion

A huge leak of documents called the ‘Panama Papers’ brought to light how the rich and powerful hide their wealth using tax havens. The files were leaked from one of the world’s most secretive companies called Mossack Fonseca, a Panamanian law firm.

The documents, known as the Panama Papers, did not spare anyone from international politicians to business leaders and celebrities. While many of the figures named in the leak have denied the reports, the leak has raised questions about corruption in the global financial system.

This hot topic makes its chance to the current AFSB GD topics. So, here’s what to know about it:

What are Panama Papers?

The Panama Papers are 11.5 million documents or 2.6 terabytes of digital data in various forms which are provided more than a year ago by an unnamed source to a German newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung. They were taken from the files of the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, described as the fourth-largest offshore law firm in the world. The files show how Mossack Fonseca clients were able to launder money, dodge sanctions and avoid tax.

These records reveal a list of individuals who have paid the firm and brought the benefits of the secretive, lax regulatory system in which it operates to set up offshore entities in tax havens around the world.

Why did it made headlines?

It is the biggest leak in history, making data released by the Wikileaks organisation in 2010 tiny in front of it.

The articles brought to light nearly 2,15,000 offshore shell companies and 14,153 clients who were tied to Mossack Fonseca. The information in the documents dates back to 1977 and goes up to December last year. Emails make up the largest type of document leaked, but images of contracts and passports were also released.panama-papers-group-discussion

What are Shell Companies?

Shell companies have the outward appearance of being legitimate businesses but are just empty shells. They do nothing but manage money, while hiding who owns it. Some of the main allegations centre on the creation of these Shell companies.

How did the news spread to the world?

Süddeutsche Zeitung shared the data with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, a non-profit organization, along with reporters from over 100 news agencies around the world which are expected to publish more articles based on the Panama Papers in the coming days.

Accusations Made by the Papers?

12 current or former heads of state and government in the data, including dictators accused of looting their own countries and more than 60 relatives and associates of heads of state and other politicians were linked to the use of tax havens to shield vast wealth.

Some of the include the President of Argentina, Mauricio Macri; President of Ukraine, Petro O. Poroshenko; The then Prime Minister of Iceland, Mr. Gunnlaugsson; Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif; King Salman of Saudi Arabia; the former emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and its former prime minister; the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino; Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani; and the Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi.

Who are the Indians involved?

Over 500 Indians figure on the firm’s list of offshore companies, foundations and trusts. There are also 234 Indian passports revealed.

It includes Mumbai gang-lord late Iqbal Mirchi, film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, corporates including DLF owner K P Singh and nine members of his family, the promoters of Apollo Tyres and Indiabulls, Gautam Adani’s elder brother Vinod Adani, Shishir Bajoria from West Bengal and Anurag Kejriwal, the former chief of the Delhi unit of Loksatta Party, and the list goes on.

How much money is there in offshore tax havens?

An estimated total of at least $7.6 trillion is stored escaping the taxes. That’s upward of 8 percent of the entire world’s financial wealth, and growing. The offshore wealth has surged about 25 percent over the past five years much of which reflects “new money” from China and other developing nations whose citizens to an extent have legitimate fears about political stability and the rule of law.

To crack  SSB interview,  recommend you to get “Let’s Crack SSB Interview” book from Amazon.

Do the Panama Papers show evidence of any crimes?

It is not clear. Several countries began investigations into the leaked data on Monday the 4th April, including the United States, France, Germany, Australia, Austria, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Holding money in an offshore company is generally not illegal, although such financial arrangements can be used in illegal ways for example, to facilitate tax evasion or money laundering.

What has Mossack Fonseca said about the leak?

The Panamanian law firm defended its practices and appeared to threaten the news agency with legal action. The firm said that it was legal and common for companies to establish commercial entities in different jurisdictions for a variety of legitimate reasons and maintained that it had always complied with international protocols to the best of its ability to ensure that companies it incorporated were not being used for illegal or illicit purposes.

But it said the news agency had obtained unauthorized access to proprietary documents and information taken from our company and also said that using information/documentation unlawfully obtained is a crime and that they will not hesitate to pursue all available criminal and civil remedies.

So, the real question is, should people be allowed by law to involve in such cases as by the Panamanian law? Or should there be a law firm like Mossack Fonseca at the first place creating safe havens for tax evaders?

  1. Reorganization of states on linguistic basis. Is it justifiable?

Until 1947, as long as everyone had a common goal to “oust the British”, things were fine. It was pretty much a case of Bharat Mata ki Jai all along. But after that was accomplished, the fight for a share in the power/economy/development pie became the common yet differentiated goal, which assumed various forms, one of which being – linguistic identity and division of the country based on languages spoken. Is it justifiable in a democracy where everyone has a right to speak his own language?

The educational institutions in richer countries and in private schools we expect the standard of education to be higher. We also expect the students to have access to better resources. But people with no money would miss out on all these. So, does the Indian education system need a reform?

  1. Is Indian media playing a proper role?

The media, along with art and literature, must help the people in their struggle against poverty, unemployment, and other social evils in contemporary India. What do we see on television these days? Top 7 Military Exercises To Get A Ripped Body

1
top military workout tips

Our warriors are always ready to counter any insurgency and threat to the nation. At times, their weapons might fail plans may fall apart or enemies may run away. But of all the possibilities involved, the last thing they would worry about is their level of fitness. They will be able to sprint to cover, carry a fellow soldier out of harm or hurdle obstacles, all with a high level of efficiency. So with lives hanging in the balance, the soldiers train themselves heavily. Daily exercise is like a routine to them.

While most of the times, results of a workout program have been disappointing for non-military people, military people have years of experience in workouts and exercises that yield results. It’s easy to see the soldier with big guns and ripped abs, and wonder how he manages to look like that without a proper work-out schedule. Most servicemen in the military don’t have time for weight training, yet they manage to get a ripped body following the ‘Military Exercises’.

Want to know more about these exercises? Read on…

First things first – weight loss. One should have around 7% fat to get a ripped body. But if you are an athlete, you need to have 10-14% of it. While everyone has their own methods of training for fat loss, there are several exercises that work for everyone.

  1. WARM-UP: You cannot do anything without a good preparation and warm up is the best preparation for working out your body. You ready your muscles for the training. Warming up can be done in two phases – stretching and cardio, 10 minutes of each will just do it. Stretching allows for improved performance, reduced potential for injury, increased blood flow, and agility. But if you skip on this, be ready to have serious cramps and muscle pains.
  1. DIET: Proper diet is necessary to build and maintain a ripped body. To build muscle, you must cut calories and increase proteins than needed. You can refer to my previous article on how to maintain a good diet. Just understand the importance of diet when this is second in the list.

To crack SSB interview,  recommend you to get “Let’s Crack SSB Interview” book from Amazon.

Coming to exercises…

  1. SQUATS: Squats hits the core and large lower body muscles. The more muscle mass and motor units recruited during an exercise, the better the exercise for burning body fat, and the squat is the best of them all. Raise your arms in front of you and parallel to the ground. Now go down till your thighs are parallel to the ground and repeat 15 X 4 times.
  1. CHIN-UPS AND PULL UPS: They are the complete exercise for back development – especially for the lats – and you exercise every part of your back, just by using a combination of chin-up and pull-up variations. For upper back, hold the rod right above your body and for lats, increase the distance to about a metre.
  1. MILITARY PRESS: Also called a shoulder press, the military press targets the deltoids, and is generally done in a standing position to stabilize their core. You can particularly use any weights from bricks to rocks if you don’t have access to dumbbells or rod. Open your arms parallel to your chest and probably holding weights. Raise your arms up touching the weights to each other and slowly come down. Repeat 15 X 4.
  1. PUSH-UPS: Push-ups are the best exercise you can do for your triceps, biceps and chest. If you are doing it with your palms parallel to your chest and about a feet gap in between, you are working your chest and biceps but if you are doing it right below your shoulders making a triangle with your palms, you are working your triceps.
  1. CARDIO: Heavy aerobic exercises which elevate the breathing are to be done two or three times weekly. 30 minutes daily is more than enough for it. Do not do it on your training days or you will be exhausted too soon. Sprinting is the best option for doing cardio. Follow this: Jog for 2 mins, sprint for 1 minute. Repeat 5 such sets for 15 minutes then walk for 3 minutes and repeat 4 sets again.

To crack SSB interview,  recommend you to get “Let’s Crack SSB Interview” book from Amazon.

And viola, you already worked out your whole body. But there are few things to take care of:

  1. Stop the exercises immediately if you feel pain or are out of breath.
  2. Do not drink water when your heart is pumping heavily. Chances are that your lungs will inhale the water and you may die.
  3. Follow the routine religiously and stick to it. It may be hard at first to manage but remember, an officer never quits. Push yourself for 1-2 weeks and believe me, you will get addicted to it and crave for more of it.
  4. There are people who work so hard to get that ripped body and then there are cheaters – taking steroids. DO NOT take drugs! You may take supplements and that too after you get natural cuts.
  5. Finally, eat like you have never eaten and sleep like you have never slept after the work-out.

18 Basic Points To Know About IAF For Cracking AFSB Interview

0
Cracking AFSB Interview

The foremost thing recruiters of an organisation expect from the applicants is their knowledge about the organisation. The more knowledge the applicant has, the easier it will be to get along with co-workers. Hence, it increases his/her chances of being selected into that organisation.

In the case of the military, the assessors look forward for the OLQs to select aspirants. But at the end of the day, even they are inclined towards the candidate who has more knowledge about the organisation (like in case of a tie). It will be easier for him/her to get along after induction and that’s what they want.

To crack SSB interview,  recommend you to get “Let’s Crack SSB Interview” book from Amazon.

Recommended For Indian Army, Cleared NDA SSB Interview

I am Nikhil Srivastava a 10+2 pass out in 2015 and a die-hard Army fan & I am sharing my  NDA SSB experience. My reporting was on 20 Feb, 2016  for NDA 136 along with one of my schoolmate  and my best friend Amit Adhikari(chest no 2+ , I am chest no 8+),it was the third attempt for both of us . Both of us were thinking about how exciting it would be when our names would be called while travelling to Allahabad.
Our reporting was at 1 PM  ,  so we reached Allahabad without any problem.

Luckily we got 19 SSB, the same board from which both of us were conference out in TES 34. Certain thoughts were coming in my mind that it might be some lucky charm or somewhat getting 19 SSB again but I knew I had to make it large this time.

The routine was as usual , we got our chest numbers got our rooms and stuff.
We practiced for group discussion that day and had a good night’s sleep before proceeding for the Day 1 Tests.
Out of 53 candidates who reported that day 35 were taken for the further testing.
Luckily I was chest no 27 , the same chest no I got in TES 34 last time.
We all know the procedure so I will cut it short
I did
12/12 TAT
59/60 WAT
52/60 SRT
Aspirants, the secret here is practise and practise , practise helps you increase your speed , a factor which is decisive in psychological tests,Rest be truthful in whatever you write , Just don’t conceal anything or else most of us know the result.NDA SSB Experience
Next comes the GTO tests
Our group had 10 members , a group of repeaters , but it only helped us we all knew that the key to success here is coordination and taking these tests as games rather than tests which we followed throughout the GTO tests o(r games, I should say.
The result was also good we did the progressive group task in about 32 minutes in which everybody was able to give his ideas, my lecturette was also good, the topic being “Social Networking”  ,Group Discussion was also very smooth, we reached to a common solution in GPE quickly( Though I was not able to complete my GPE in time) , I completed my command task efficiently & well within time & did 9 Individual Obstacles.
My interview was on GTO Day 2  & I was interviewed by the president of the board,
The interview was focused mostly on my PIQ , a little GK was also there but being an ardent newspaper  and CSR reader helped me a lot in overcoming the GK section . My interview was a little different from others as none of my fellas at SSB were interviewed by two officers except me.
The questions were all same, the rapid fire , the cross questions to confirm and the again cross questions to reconfirm.

To crack SSB interview,  recommend you to get “Let’s Crack SSB Interview” book from Amazon.

My interview lasted for 50 minutes which according  to me was good.
That day was Monday so we planned a trip to Anand Bhawan, the home of our first PM, Mr. Jawahar Lal Nehru and while returning one of my friend organised a mini party at KFC .
The day of conference arrived, I knew I had done my best and there were no regrets. I was asked to rate my performance & I said 7/10 as I had left my GPE uncompleted and was not able to complete 60 SRTs well within time.
Here I finally found the second person in my interview, he was actually one of the phycologists.
