Experience of SSB Interview, Recommended in 7th Attempt

Hi friends, I am Vivek, writing here to share my experience of SSB interview. In my 7th attempt I was recommended by 14 SSB, Selection centre east to get inducted into OTA Chennai. In my first attempt I was not recommended (out on the day of conference) and continuously 5 times screened out. Here it is what happened after 5 screen outs. I can write a book on my journey to SSB! Ha ha ha..but I would like to limit wrt to sharing my experience in interview which will help you all. I sincerely thank ssbcrack.com for providing me an opportunity.

Recommended in 7th Attempt
I and my twin brother [He appeared for fifth time along with me and got screened in for first time in this batch] discussed on the day before reporting that let us not report for testing and we will go back. I don’t know whether it was frustration of continuous failure for 5 times without even getting screened in or was hurt that my love is not accepting me. Finally we consoled ourselves prayed god and decided to go for testing. This time experience in both two stages testing was very unique. There were days I use to practise TAT, WAT, SRT, SD & stories for screening, OIR test practise every day but the results were JUST SCREENED OUT. So I decided I will do whatever I can and I like, I will not bother whether they will consider me or not. We reported on absentee batch, it was 14 SSB, as usual OIR test happened, OIR was good as all of us know it is very easy. Then a picture was flashed which looked like a person looking at the art competition and judging it (my story was on this context). I discussed only few points in discussion. After lunch it was as usual lethargic wait because of continuous screened out experience, finally GTO started announcing results, suddenly I heard my twin brother’s chest no. I was very happy but worried to know what will happen to mine. And finally I got screened in after 5 continuous screened out.

Psychology test

It was my firm decision that, whatever “spontaneous” thoughts about picture, word, situation that I get will pen it down (this is what psychologist instructs), I did not even prepare for Self Description test and not even for blank picture. It was just because continuously for 2 years preparing all these and getting screened out was very funny {hurt and disappointed} so I did not do any preparation. I wrote whatever the first thought/response for all tests.

GTO Testing

Group discussion was good. Two topics were 1) Is women empowerment happening in India or not and 2) Telangana. I presented few points like achievement of women, state of women in rural areas, problems faced by them, when the issue of security of women was raised I presented some points like govt is setting up Nirbhaya Fund of Rs. 1000 crores to look over the safety of women, we are not either completely westernized or regional in our culture etc. My view on Telangana was if it benefits people let it be separated, development should not be compromised in both the states and separation should not be just for political reasons with fake promises. I did not worry much should I give chance to others, I should not shout etc. etc. Moment I got any good thought, I presented it, but my points were matured one as I got all these points by the habit of reading editorials in news papers.

PGT, HGT, FGT, CT

I don’t know was it luck for me? Our GTO was very strict. His words were “if you know the solution rise your hand, if you simply rise and show your drama I will not recommend you.” This was advantage since ours was repeaters batch and it prevented becoming a fish market.
In PGT, I gave solution twice.
HGT, I gave once but it was asked to be improved by the team.
FGT, I could not give any solution.
Command Task was little tough. It was a ship is in middle of the sea, it is going to submerge, how will you get your men out? But GTO grilled me there, air is there, pressure is there etc. somehow got solution.
Before CT, GTO asked me about salary of my father, where I am from, how would I rate my performance in all 3 testing, In which test of GTO I did not perform well.
Group Obstacles, Individual Obstacles – I was physically fit, I did best there.

Interview

I discussed very freely, I always answered what I felt, be it good or bad and never tried to paint it. Questions were more about my family, how I help my family, challenge in my work, books that I have read and Issues regarding Kashmir. The best part of interview that I can’t forget is that he asked me about my education. My percentage in degree is just 57.5, Answer from my bottom of heart came “I have just secured 57.5 % in graduation, My dad in spite of economic difficulties struggled alot and paid fees for college books etc. But I have not done justice to him. I regret it even today I feel sad and bad about it” {No forging or trying to defend I was good in NCC, Sports, I had problems etc. etc. We are sent to college to study, if we have not done it, Then it is obvious mistake on our part} However percentage will not affect your performance but it is added advantage if you have good score.  
I had given photo copies of certificates of all my achievements i.e.  CM Commendation card for meritorious service in NCC, Best Performer with my employer, 3 marathons (10kms) certificates, Army Attachment Camp.

Conference

I had conference for 20 minutes, Board discussed for 20 mins before calling me inside. They asked me about where I went in Allahabad, I had been to Bhag Milkha Bhag movie on one day and other day to Sangam. President asked me can you comment on present context wrt to the movie and next question what will you do if you become sports minister, later some general knowledge questions on capital cities of Spain, Malaysia, Thailand, currencies of Japan and China. President asked whether I went to coaching. Yes sir 4 years back. He also repeated few questions which were asked in interview and one situation reaction, i.e. what will you do if enemy firing is on? I said i will order my men to charge and retaliate immediately. Are you sure? Yes sir. Confident? Yes sir. My conference was over.
Finally a smart Lt. Col saab arrived. He said your performance was disheartening. We took 38 among 148 expecting all will perform well, but it is really disappointing. My heart beats rose. My chest no. was announced, I was unable to believe. Two were recommended. Other person was previously recommended candidate.
Some of the tips to succeed in SSB that I learnt after my 6 failures
Psychology Test:
Read more and more good books to improve imagination. so that story will not be vague and good story can be presented.
Present spontaneous thought in all the psychology tests.
Bring out action in every sentence.
Group Testing:
Read editorials in news paper, be aware of current happenings. This will definitely help in group discussion and Lecturette. You will definitely get matured points to discuss in group discussion rather than vague points.
Don’t use any templates and priorities in Group Planning Exercise. Just write your planning what you feel at that moment. Templates and Prioritization are coached reactions, not individual thoughts/responses.
For PGT, HGT, CT, FGT, don’t be in hurry along with the team, just look at the structure for 2 minutes, one or the other solution will definitely flash, give your idea to team, don’t worry if it is accepted or not, GTO is noting down who is giving solutions, solutions provided by individual accepted by group or not doesn’t matter until the solution is correct.
For Group Race and Individual obstacles, be physically fit, don’t stand at wall and help everyone (to impress GTO everyone starts helping all others to clear wall) if you feel that someone really needs help, then provide your help to clear the wall, not just for the sake of helping.
Interview
First and foremost, talk to Interviewing officer like having a chit chat with your friend, this makes you to present free flow of thoughts. Be it correct or wrong; freely keep flowing your answers. Don’t assume anything such as my X answer will give this impression; my Y answer will give that impression. Read news papers, editorials, engage in discussion with friends on current issues. Being a prospect officer in Armed forces you should know what is happening in and around you. You must know each and every aspect in 360 degree what you have written in your PIQ.

CONCLUSION

SSB interview is test of individual personality and not a competitive exam. Each and every person has qualities in himself/herself that is why you apply for Armed Forces. Be natural in your approach. If you go for coaching just take it as a mode to become familiar with the procedure. SSB Technique is scientifically designed. They will easily distinguish between natural performance and coached performance. Show what you are. Believe me, they don’t want coached thoughts. Because if you show what you are, they can decide whether you suit for armed forces or not. But if you show something of others how can they tell whether you suit? As simple as that. I don’t mean coaching guys will not get recommended, It depends on the dose of coaching you consume. Over dose is definitely danger.
We are not trained at DIPR to judge our self and draw wrong/unscientific inferences. As far as I know none of us can decide what our stories, sentences, situation reactions, performance in GTO, our answers to IO will infer. Without any assumption, appear for SSB, this is what I did and I will suggest to all also. SSB members are sitting to asses, let them do their job and we should do our job. As CHM Kaka Singh saab of 14 SSB tells, “sirf mehnat karna hai hamara kaam, dena hai ya nahi dena hai uparwalon ko chod dho”
Candidates having more attempts to appear for, don’t bother much, become free minded and appear naturally you will succeed. Each and every attempt is considered as first attempt, Do not bother if you are attempting 1st or 10th time. You have read lot of experiences in this site only where 10th, 11th, 13th attempts have given success. In case you lose all attempts, let me be very frank that opportunities are limited in armed forces, but world is vast and opportunities are more. The Right Approach To Become An Officer In Indian Armed Forces

Hello defense aspirants!!. First of all, a hearty salute to those who are aspiring to take Indian Armed Forces as a career. You can pat your shoulder this very moment if you have had this zeal even once in your life. Trust me you are different!. But then this “being different” loses its soul when you don’t take the “next required step” ahead.  Next required step is not the ssb. When you make your dream dish, you just don’t put “whichever” ingredients you have in the microwave. You don’t think “chalo yaar, jo hai bas yahi hai….ab banna hoga to isi se ban jaega!!”. Because like this, it’s never going to happen. Similarly, for becoming the officer in Indian Armed Forces, you should be the right “masala” which they can cook into a yummy dish (officer).



When candidates come across the OLQs, some find many of them already present in their behaviour, while some may not find.

Now, what people normally do, they start cultivating OLQs in themselves. Most of the times, they think that after 30-40 days of their “intensive” efforts, they will manage to get those OLQs. Look! SSB has many “synonyms”, and one of them is “consistency”. You have to think that “can I be consistent with these OLQs?”. Because in the 5 days ssb, you will be thrown into many mind jiggling activities again and again for long periods. These activities are specially designed to shatter your misconceptions about you. Since all these activities take the interviewing officer directly into your mind, therefore it is good to work on yourself in some realistic terms.

You cannot attain these OLQs within 15 days or a month. You need to devote a decent time on yourself. I recently read an article on ssbcrack about “Sunaina Mandhan” ( https://ssbcrack.com/2013/09/in-conversation-with-sunaina-mandhan.html) who got recommended for IAF in her very first attempt. She has clearly mentioned in her interview that she took 6 months for introspecting herself. Always remember, this is just a misconception that you cannot clear the ssb in your first attempt. We have many such examples of the students who cleared ssb in their very first attempt. The only thing they did was, they took their time, prepared well in advance, kept on practicing, and finally hit the hammer exactly when the iron was red hot.

Here’s a guide which will help you on working over yourself
  1. First you have to know “who are you” (introspection). Because unless and until you don’t know about your own behavioral traits, you cannot know how much far you are from those OLQs. Take your time, and introspect yourself.
  2. Now know the OLQs. Know them up to their very best realistic meaning. There are many characteristical traits associated with them, even one OLQ would be having many traits within it.
  3. Now third step is to take a leap, and start developing them into your personality. Sometimes you will face difficulties, but be honest with yourself. Start thinking like an officer. Deal with the daily stuff of your life in a way an officer would deal.

Remember, if you will be having these traits in your behaviour in the actual terms, then only you would be able to be consistent with those OLQs throughout the ssb.

Next thing is, know your SSB. “What is ssb” and “why it is mandatory to pass it to become an officer”.” What is its significance” and “what does it constitutes”. Study about the various activities of ssb. Practice them and always keep the significance of that activity in your mind. Each and every activity of the ssb is important, and equally important is to perform in them. Always keep clear in your mind that what accessor wants to know about you through that activity.

It is very important for the preparation of ssb to think always from the accessor’s point of view. Place yourself in his place and make opinion about yourself. Think that if you were him, what you would have inferred from the candidates activity/statement.

Divide your thoughts in three parts, and work on them in a balanced manner.
  1. Thoughts, actions and speech (Mansa, karma and vacha). Your ssb is divided into 3 parts i.e. thoughts, actions and speech. You will find that in some activities of your ssb, like TAT, WAT, SRT etc., your thoughts play the major role. While in group exercises, your actions play the major role. Similarly, in your PI and Conference, your speech plays the major role. Now, the important thing to be considered here is, you have to be a one single person throughout your thoughts, actions and speech. Even if one part is not matching against other two, it means you are being an imposter. Let’s say, a candidate has been picturising the image of an extroverted & adventurous person throughout the activities of ssb. But when it goes in the interview, it was found out it he was hiding his originality, then it can go severely against him. Normally, interview goes up to 45-50 mins, and it is very easy for the interviewing officer to bring out your true self by the end (remember, he is your “baap”, in all respects ;p). Doesn’t matter what kind of personality you are having, always try to show your originality, who you exactly are.
  2. OLQs. Now, keeping the above point in mind, ensure that you are the person having maximum OLQs. This is the reason why I mentioned earlier to induct the OLQs in your behaviour in real terms. Because if they are not in your personality, you cannot be the same person having OLQs throughout your thoughts, actions and speech.
  3. Trainability. Always keep this thing in mind that they are looking for a “trainable person”. A person who they can train into an officer of Indian Armed Forces.
Your OLQs are divided into 2 parts; Trainable and Non-trainable OLQs. Trainable OLQs are those which they can induct into a person during training also. Hence, they don’t hold much weightage, but still having them up to some amount is necessary. Non-trainable OLQs are those which cannot be inducted into a candidate’s personality through training. Hence, it is mandatory for a candidate to posses those qualities.

List of Non-trainable OLQs are:
  • Reasoning ability.
  • Social Adaptability.
  • Cooperation.
  • Sense of responsibility.
  • Liveliness.
  • Courage.
A candidate is required to posses these mandatory qualities, and if they are not present, then induct them well in time. 
So, as a whole, a balanced candidate who is having these mandatory basic OLQs and who they find can be trainable is bound to be selected. Know this mantra, and attain your dream. Being an officer is not very far from you, start well in time to attain proficiency, and hit the spot.

Hi, my name is Manoj Kumar and I got recommended in my 4th attempt from 11 SSB Allahabad. Before sharing my SSB success story I would like to tell you all something about me. I am a B.com graduate and presently staying in Bangalore from 7 years, basically I am from Uttrakhand. My grandfather and father were part of this prestigious organization but I will be the first commissioned officer from my family in Indian Army. My first attempt was in Bhopal and I was conference out, in my 2nd and 3rd attempt I was screened out due to my lack of participation in group discussion (what I felt). This was my 4th attempt and I finally cracked SSB. So, this is my 5 days experience at Allahabad.

Day 1 Screening

We were 107 candidates who reported on 31st July 2013 for 11 SSB, 3 among us were recommended candidates and maximum candidates were repeaters, I was given chest no 79 for screening, 2 of my friends were also there in my batch from Bangalore. Next day was our intelligence test followed by PPDT, I attempted all the verbal and non verbal questions and in story we were shown a hazy picture where a gentleman was walking with a bag in his hand with a lady besides her on the footpath. I wrote a story on an accident and made the male character as my hero. Everyone narrated their story well because we were in repeater’s group and In group discussion our group was divided into two parts and after that discussion went smooth where maximum candidates got chance to speak at least twice. I spoke at least 3 to 4 times and my group accepted almost half of my story. Now it was the time for results and I was accepting my number at the same time I was thinking about my best friend (chest no 77) who could not able to take part in GD, but he narrated his story well. Results came and they called our numbers in random order and I was given a new chest number 24 and my best friend also got screened in and he got the chest number 23. Total 40 candidates were selected for 2nd stage.

Day 2 Psychology

Next day was psychological test, first test was TAT where 12 pictures (11 clear and 1 blank) were shown to us and I completed all the story on given time. I made the actionable stories on short term goals and in blank story I wrote about blood donation camp which we organized during our college days.
In WAT I completed all the 60 words, I wrote the first thought whatever came to my mind.
In SRT I did only 37 reactions and I was making sure that I write the same response for similar kind of situations and does not show them that I am not a balanced personality.
In SD I gave the answers of all the five questions in given time, and wrote 1-2 negative points about me and also gave the measures how I am trying to overcome them.

Day 3 GTO Day 1

3rd day was GTO first day and we were divided into 4 groups, each group having 10 candidates, our GTO was colonel. First activity of the day was Group Discussion where we were given 2 topics and we choose the 1st topic which was about Telangana issue and pros and cons of dividing the states. 2nd GD topic was given by GTO sir was about responsible for women harassment. I spoke only 2-3 times in each GD, chest no 21 who was recommended previously spoke continuously throughout the GD.
 
Next activity was Group Planning Exercise where we were shown a table model map and we had to identify some problem and solve them with the help of group. Everyone had the same priorities of problems and everyone contributed their thoughts in discussion, chest no 26 gave our group plan.
 
Then it was the time for Progressive Group Task and GTO sir already told us that he does not want Dara Singh idea and need a firm idea where we can cross the obstacles easily. When we completed 3 obstacles GTO stopped us, I made sure that I contribute my ideas in every obstacle.
In Half Group Task we were divided in odd even numbers. We completed our task within 2 mins chest number 22 gave 2 ideas and I gave 1 idea in HGT.
 
Next task was Group Obstacle Race and all the teams completed at same time or we can say that our GTO’s made us wait so that other teams does not lack behind.
Then it was the time for lecturette and I spoke about Google for 3 mins.
Our Individual Obstacle happened on the first day around 12 noon, it was very humid and hot outside and maximum done by me and chest no 22 was 11 obstacles.

Day 4 GTO Day 2 

On GTO 2nd day we were left with only 2 tasks Command task and Final Group Task. In Command Task GTO sir called us in random order and I was called by 6 commanders as a subordinate to help them in their task and I completed my command task in 2-3 mins.
Next was Final Group Task in this task GTO sir did not turn out with pen and file. I knew that GTO had already made his mind about selecting the particular candidates.

Interview

My interview happened on the 3rd day after my GTO first day got over. Chest no 22, 23 and me (24) were called immediately after ground task, we even did not get time to change our dresses. I waited for more than 1 hour and 30 mints before interview. My interview lasted for around 30 mins.
My interview was taken by DY President, his rank was Colonel. First he asked about the place I am coming from i.e. about Bangalore and then after some questions he started his first rapid fire question in that he asked me starting from my 10th standard percentage onwards till my graduation percentage, why I got less marks in 10th standard, why I opted for commerce after my 10th class, what was the problem I faced when I moved from J&K to Bangalore after my 10th, which was the subject I liked the most and which I did not like and why, which teacher I liked most and which I hated most and why, how many friends I have and which qualities I admire in them and which qualities they like about me, which were the roles and responsibilities I held during my school and college days, positions and achievements I have achieved in past, etc. Total of 18-22 questions were asked in one stretch and I did not answer 3-4 questions. Then he repeated those questions again and I answered them.
Next rapid fire was about my previous organization where I had worked for more than 18 months and about my preparation for SSB before coming to Allahabad. In this he asked 10-12 questions and I answer about 9-10. This time interviewing officer did not repeat those 2-3 questions I could not answer. Then he asked me my mistakes I did in my previous attempts and my strong and weak qualities (I said exactly same thing what I had written in my psychology).
My interview was overall satisfactory and I was disappointed because I could not answer all the questions in rapid fire. After coming out from interview room I prepared for all the questions which I could not answer in interview.

Day 5 Conference Day

They started conference from last chest no in a reverse order. When chest no 25 came out from the conference hall, I was sitting outside in a chair and they took almost 15 min before calling me in. I was prepared for the situations (because I thought they are going to ask some SRTs). After getting inside the conference room, first questions which was asked to me by my IO was-
Manoj what exactly were you thinking outside the conference hall? (Nothing came to my mind at that moment and I directly said) Sir, I was thinking about the situations which could be possibly asked to me. Then he (my IO) asked what situation you are expecting? I told them some situation which were asked to my friends during their conference and gave the solution to them. Then he asked me what I spoke in lecturette and 2-3 more questions which I forgot to answer during my interview. Lastly he asked me some formal questions and told me to keep doing the hard work.
At last when the result came I was one among the five candidates who got selected to join the best government organization of India and that was the best moment of my life.
 Friends at last I have fulfilled my dream and my merit list is out. I am joining OTA on 5th Oct 2013.

AFCAT paper consists of 100 questions. Paper has questions from various subjects like English, mathematics, military aptitude and reasoning and general awareness. Topics covered under these subjects are as follows.

  • General Awareness – History, Sports, Geography, Environment, Civics, Basic Science, Defence, Art, Culture, Current Affairs, Politics etc.
  • Verbal Ability in English – Comprehension, Error Detection, Sentence Completion, Synonyms, Antonyms and Testing of Vocabulary.

Preparation Tips for AFCAT

For preparation
  1. Follow a guide book .guide book can be any but it must cover these subjects.
  2. Make your strong subjects stronger, i.e. if you have good command over math and reasoning it will be easy for you to score well, even if you are average in other two.
  3. Solve previous year question paper using a timer; it will enhance your speed.
  4. Read magazines and newspaper regularly. It helps in improving two things G.K. and English vocab.
  5. Make notes about major sports events like grand slams, ICC champions trophy etc.
  6. Always target to attend 60+ correct questions. And control the negatives.
  7. Brush up your grammar knowledge to attend error detection questions.
  8. Some books which can be followed are Arihant path finder, R.S. Agarwal for verbal and nonverbal reasoning.
  9. Always keep a wrist watch with you while practicing and in exam too. It helps a lot in managing time.

Myths about SSB

Dear Aspirants, even after having sufficient guidance from different sources, some myths about SSB prevails among the aspirants. This article mainly aims at removing all such myths and bad information from your minds. It is the duty of SSBCrack Editorial Team to help you all to get a right perspective of SSB.

There are several myths about SSB. We will go into each one by one –
  1. Mess Staff: A common myth prevails among the candidates that SSB Mess staff are efficient Human observers and they will report to the President about your conduct in Mess ie How do you watch TV, How you talk with Group mates etc. It is absolutely a wrong notion and your personality is assessed only by the GTO, Psycho and IO.
  2. Language: It is widely believed among the candidates that those who are really good at English can get recommended. It is absolutely wrong and Language is not at all a parameter of selection. It will be absolutely a blunder to use sophisticated language during your stay at SSB. It will not create any favorable impression. And it is also wrong that those who cannot speak well in English are not recommended.
  3. Education: It is absolutely wrong to believe that those who get high standard education in Convent Schools or Schools in Metropolitan cities. Actually those who come from backward places are found to be more effective at SSB. A high grade is not going to impress the SSB and poor Grades shall not cause a problem in SSB as SSB is not a competition.
  4. Coaching Centres: It is widely believed that SSB doesn’t like trained candidates. That is absolutely wrong. And it is also wrong to believe Coaching provides an undue advantage over other candidates. No coaching can improve your OLQ’s unless you try to do so. But coaching greatly increases your confidence and reduces your time consume during Psychological tests.
  5. Favoritism: There is nothing stuff in the SSB which can ever give undue advantage for a candidate over others. SSB doesn’t consider whether you are from RIMC or from a Rural School, OR whether you went to coaching or not. SSB is so designed to see that all candidates, whether he got coaching or not, a student of RIMC or a convent school, or from a Village or a cosmopolitan city, shall have an equal chances and no one gets any advantage over other. The pals of Army Officers, or Veterans or a cadet of NCC shall not have any advantage. Only you need to project your OLQ’s. That’s it.
  6. Repeaters: Repeaters are also given attention in SSB. It is absolutely a blunder to believe that fresher has a greater chance of selection. But it sometimes happens mainly because their Psycho part remains much natural than Repeaters. So repeaters go ahead. Take care of your Psychology. And it is wrong to believe that once getting Conferenced out will be an end of your career. You might not have been able to project some of Your OLQ’s well. You might get recommended in the next attempts.
  7. SSB Evaluation and Individual Obstacles: SSB is not a competition and hence your aim must not be for securing maximum marks particularly in Psycho as you may try to answer maximum questions within allotted time leaving several blunders in the answers most particularly in SRT. So take your time, answer every SRT considering your own Reactions only. Please do not copy any answers from anywhere. And it is wrong to believe that attempting maximum IO’s would increase your chances of selection. IO is an individual task and doesn’t have much importance unlike the Group Tasks. So please don’t start preparation for Individual Obstacles from the moment you get your call letter. Give more focus on Psychology particularly repeaters.

 Indian Navy Pilot Observer ATC – ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS

  • Who can Apply? Candidates who have passed Engineering Degree or are in the final year of Engineering Course in any discipline from a AICTE recognised university / educational institute with at least 60% marks till 5th / 7th semester, in regular / integrated course respectively. In addition, for ATC entry the candidate must have 60% aggregate marks in class X and XII and minimum 60% marks in English in class XII.
  • Call up for SSB: Candidates will be issued call up for Service Selection Board (SSB) interviews based on their academic performance.
  • Minimum %age on joining INA: The candidates will, however, be required to pass final examination BE/B.Tech / Integrated Course with minimum 60% marks. The candidates failing to meet minimum %age in BE/B.Tech Degree / Integrated Course will not be permitted to join INA Ezhimala.

Permanent body tattoos are not permitted on any part of the body, however, certain concessions are permitted to candidates belonging to tribal areas communities as declared by the Government of India. and on the reverse side of palm/back (dorsal) side of hand.

Job Roles

  • Pilot Entry: Pilot candidates will undergo 22 weeks of Naval Orientation Course (NOC) at INA, Ezhimala followed by Stage I and Stage II flying training at the Air Force/Naval Establishment. On successful completion of training, the candidates will be awarded wings. The candidates will be entitled for flying pay and allowances only after award of wings.
  • Observer Entry: Observer candidates will undergo 22 weeks of Naval orientation course (NOC) at INA, Ezhimala, Kerala. On completion of NOC the candidates will undergo SLT(X) Tech course followed by ab-initio training at Observer School. On successful completion of training at Observer School, the candidates will be awarded Observer wings. The candidates will be entitled for flying pay and allowances only after award of wings.
  • ATC Entry: Candidates will undergo 22 weeks of Naval Orientation Course at the INA, Ezhimala, Kerala followed by professional training at Air Force Academy and at various Naval Training Establishments/Units/Ships.

How to Apply: Candidates are to register and fill application on the recruitment website www.joinindiannavy.gov.in. The candidates are to apply from 25 Aug 18 to 14 Sep 18.

Selection Procedure:

  • Candidates will be shortlisted based on their graduation percentage.
  • Candidate with good percentage has more chance to get shortlisted for the SSB.
  • Shortlisted candidates will get the call for the SSB interview.
  • There will be no written test before SSB interview.
  • Candidates who will clear the SSB interview will undergo the medical test.
  • A final merit list will be prepared by the Indian Navy.
  • Candidates will get the joining instructions based on their order in merit.

  • After submitting the form, an Application Number will be generated. Application number will automatically be available on the print out of the online application form.

  • Add following  documents, Self attested photograph,attested photocopies of 10th and 12th class certificates along with Mark Sheets, other educational certificates and marksheets of all semesters/ years.

Jobs in Defence have such a charm that we never want to quit trying even when we have failed in our previous attempts. This gives rise to a term “Repeater”. Repeaters are such a class of people, who feel that they are the most underprivileged people on this earth. When they go to attend SSB, they face raised eyebrows from the Fresher candidates, who have a belief that Repeaters are the most “Chalu” people of this world. In the very beginning itself they are separated from the whole group, the board people say ‘who all are repeaters please come this side’, it feels like criminals.

Right from the Psychologist to the GTO, don’t give details of any exercises saying that they must already be knowing it. The interviewer insulting and demoralizing them that they didn’t clear in their previous attempts, worst of all they are not even paid the TA. Nobody understands the pain of a repeater.

Folks don’t lose hope; here are some tips which will help you in clearing your SSB this time.

  1. Be Confident: I know every other person must be saying this, but this is the thing. Confidence is the most essential part of a successful personality, so take some big bites of confidence before entering the SSB now.
  2. Trust yourself: If you’ll not trust yourself then nobody will. Many of us face pressure from family after being unsuccessful in few attempts; don’t lose the trust in yourself. Keep on reminding yourself what you want to do, read success stories of aspirants who have made in their 10th, 12th attempts and think if they would have given up in the first few attempts they might have never cleared it. Success is might be delayed but it never happens that it doesn’t arrives at all.
  3. Review: Review your mistakes. Write down all your responses on a notebook. Begin from the beginning, write what all response you gave for psych tests, write the words/situations if you remember any of the picture write its description, write your answers and take expert advice on them. Write the questions you faced in your interview/conference and what answers you gave. In short recreate the whole SSB procedure.
  4. Analyze: Analyze your responses. Think about what went wrong in them. Avoid idealistic responses. Think about practical solutions. Note down in points all your analysis; you can even take experts’ advice in your solutions.
  5. Make corrections: Now after you have made out what mistake you did, and then make necessary corrections in your responses.  Find out the field in which you think you lacked in your previous SSB’s and work on it.
  6. The positives and the negatives: Find out your positive points and polish them more, find your negative ones and work on them to make them positive. Some of you might be lacking in public speaking, some might be lacking in interview so take corrective measures and work on your weaknesses.
  7. Dealing with your group: It happens that repeaters group contains people who are in a do or die situation, all want to crack it this time and all are experienced, hence the GT series where you have to work as a group becomes very tough. You just have to maintain you cool and be very balanced while the GT series. Don’t be involved in excessive shouting or bullying others. Remain nice, the GTO knows everything, you’ll cast a good impression by remaining polite and nice and not by dominating others. Make your points strongly but nicely.
  8. Stay away from the ‘Myths’: At last stay away from various myths you hear about repeaters chances of success. They want OLQ’s when they see them in you they select you, when they don’t they do not select you. It’s as simple as that. Anything other than this said about the SSB is wrong! Rumors which say that repeaters have less chances of success are simply meant to demoralize you. Stay focused on you path.
In the end utilize your experience. I believe that any repeater has more chances of success than a fresher this is because they know the whole process and have gone through it. Hence any repeater who works hard and is able to identify the mistakes of previous attempts correctly can definitely clear the SSB.

Do SSB Really Need Preparation?

In the hunt of some guidance about SSB preparation, I met a number of people who are currently officers in army and many aspirants. Whenever I asked them about their experience about SSB, I got a different answer and my view towards SSB fluctuated. Thus I collected a number of views regarding SSB and was in a serious dilemma; what should I prepare for SSB. 

I found many reviews as equivocating ones though they tried to elaborate it well but the central question was still unanswered. I wished to know what should be the exact methodology to prepare and what should be the material to prepare. But after a long search I figured out what is to be done and what not to be done. I prepared a list of 10 activities that one must inculcate before he/she appears at any SSB.
SSB is something that needs a serious preparation. Whenever you are appearing in any examination, don’t forget that there are thousands of aspirant in queue and waiting for just one opportunity to gain success; your efforts are going to make the difference between selection and rejection. To get recommended in any SSB you need to do serious efforts. One of my friends asked me what it takes to clear a SSB and my reply was I am still an aspirant but if I have to answer what it takes, I would say it’s just a combination of hard and smart work. All of us had prepared for exam but we need to triplicate our efforts for SSB. It’s something much superior to just examination.

Do SSB Really Need Preparation?

The next question that comes in our mind is what to prepare. Definitely if you are appearing for the first time, this might be roaming in your head. But yes we need to prepare for SSB and what is to be prepared here is the list.
  • Know your surroundings well.
  • Current affairs
  • English (both grammar and vocabulary)
  • Confidence
  • Physical strength
  • Personality
  • Leadership skills
  • Mental ability
  • Positive attitude
  • Motivation
Let me explain how each step will help you and in what manner
  1. Know your surroundings well: Yes it may be helpful because sometimes in PI you are asked about the place where you live and even the place of SSB u visit. So keep your eyes open and just grab a little bit about the places so that you are not numb at the PI.
  2. Current affairs: Well to keep an interactive PI and other phases of SSB current affairs are must. The topics given in lecturette may cover current affairs. You must be known to what’s happening around the globe.
  3. English: Guys don’t believe any myths regarding this one. You are going to be an officer in army; you need to have a stronghold on English. They expect you to be fluent at this very language. Though it’s not compulsory to do every activity in English but make it a habit, it will help your lifetime. Work out grammar, vocabulary and specially the tone because your tone to speak makes a lot of difference. All in all develop good communication and writing skills.
  4. Confidence: One must maintain one’s confidence level. If one is confidant his facial expressions, his way of talking and reacting will be different. Although being nervous is obvious and evident but one must not let his nervousness overcome his capabilities. And this can be inculcated by practice.
  5. Physical strength: A vital and demanded ability of defense aspirants. Your physical strength contributes a lot to your personality and is very helpful in GTO and other physical tasks. Maintain yourself physically fit; do jogging, pushups, chin ups to gain strength and stamina.
  6. Personality: don’t confuse it with your looks and your “hairstyle”. Common guys you are appearing for a decent job interview where personality differs in meaning. Personality in simple terms matters with your attitude, the way you talk and deal with others are you disciplined. A healthy personality is always noticed in a group. And you can always get an example from army persons around you what a personality they have. Always have a clean shave and get your hairs cut properly before you appear for SSB.
  7. Leadership skills: A big yes to this quality. It is one of the OLQ’s that one must inculcate. You are going to be a leader in future. You will have to lead and command a group of soldiers. You need to have the guts and decision making skills to lead a troop and guide them to attain results. The command task specially recognizes these skills. Some people say that you are born a leader or leaders are not made they are born with these skills. Not a 100 percent true, if you believe that you can; you will definitely develop them.
  8. Mental ability: The figure and simple mathematics questions that are asked during the tests conducted on screening days requires this skill. A person with average skills can do them but don’t forget most of the screening occurs at this stage. So prepare well for the questions, practice well because you are stressed and short of time in these questions and you need to work out faster and this can only be achieved by practice.
  9. Positive attitude: “Our beliefs about what we are and what we can be precisely determine what we can be”. Well guys these lines have a serious hidden meaning in them. Always go to a SSB with a positive attitude. Be ready to take challenges and believe in you. Don’t get distracted and always stay focused on your aim.
  10. Motivation: Never give up guys; it’s never an option. A positive attitude toward life will certainly help you to be successful in any field. Be motivated it will keep you energized and enthusiastic about your aims in life. Watch motivational movies or videos or whatever you feel can motivate you.
