Squadron leader Nivedita Chaoudhary First IAF Women Officer To Climb The Mt. Everest

0

Squadron leader Nivedita Chaoudhary First IAF Women Officer To Climb The Mt. Everest. One cannot climb at all unless he has sufficient urge to do so. Danger must be met (indeed it must be used) to an extent beyond that incurred to normal life. That is one reason men climb for only in response to challenge one man becomes his best.

And when it comes to striving for excellence why not take on the ultimate challenge present on this earth, why settle halfway when you have the strength and courage to go the entire length. Hence came the idea of IAF woman mountaineering expedition to Mt Everest, the highest point on the earth.
The expedition was headed by Gp Capt NK Dahiya, a very experienced mountaineer and an amazing leader himself. The team had been flagged off on 13 Apr 2011. All 11 women officers were the first women officers of the IAF to be in a situation where no other IAF women officer had been earlier, we all exhibited exemplary courage and determination in bringing laurels to the IAF and the nation.

I joined the team in 2009 after having done Basic Mountainering Course and did one successful expedition to Mt Kamet (7757 Mt) in year 2010. I went to Siachen Glacier along with the team for winter training camp in year 2010 & 2011. The endurance and grit of the team were tested during various expeditions and courses. Here we were in for a systematic, scientific and grueling physical fitness and endurance training program with three hours of weight training in the gym in the morning hours and endurance runs of two hours in the evening.First IAF Women Officer To Climb The Mt. Everest

After having reached at Nepal, we landed at Lukla on 16 Apr 11 and started our trek to Base camp, we reached Base camp on 24 Apr 11 having gained on altitude of about 8000 over 60kms in eight days. On 28 Apr 11, we all put on our crampons, tightened the climbing harness and started for acclimatization. The team was divided into two parts, Team-1 & Team-2. The first team consisting self, Sqn Ldr Lalitha Mishra, Flt LtToolika Rani, Cpl Raju Sindhu, Cpl DK Vyas and the team leader Group Captain NK Dahiya scrambled through Khumbu icefall directly towards Camp- II (6400 M). However three members fall to exertion and fever as the team hit Camp-II. The rest three self, CplRaju and team leader continued to Camp-III (7162M) the next day. On 20 May 11, we pushed to submit camp(26300’) over a grueling 11 hours of climb. Once at South Col, we just had 5 hrs of rest and 10:00 PM, the final summit climb began. Crampons, Harness and oxygen masks were strapped on, self and Cpl Raju attached our jummars to the first fixed rope along with sherpas and began our assault on the peak. Gp Capt Dahiya wished us luck. It was a full moon night. The sky was absolutely clean and the snow capped Everest was glittering under the moon light. Of course the climb was tiring but the surrounding beauty took all the attention and by the time I could realize the pain of climb, I reached balcony. It was 3.00 AM. I changed my oxygen cylinder, took rest for 5 – 10 minutes and again started climb on the final summit Ridge. As the view of the horizon and the changing colors of mountains was very enchanting. However. this portion of climb was very dangerous due to the rocky surface and very thin ridge where you can put only one foot at a time. I reached Hillary step at around 7:00 AM in the morning. As they say “Once your cross you are almost there”. As I crossed the Hillary step I could clearly see the summit. It appeared as if it was a few step away, but it took 01:30 hrs to reach the summit from there.

The overall view was so mesmerizing and the culmination of the conquest of the mother of all mountains brought tears of joy in my eyes. It was on 21 May 11 at 08:30 AM, I finally called up summit camp and said “Sir, I am on the Summit”. The flood of emotions was evident. Congratulation poured in from all the team members at Camp-II and Base Camp. At around 11:00 AM, self and Raju started descending. The descend was very dangerous and I faced life-threatening situations but all went well and I reached summit Camp at 05:00 PM. I saw someone standing outside of the Tent. It was Gp Capt Dahiya who was waiting for us, as I reached him, he hugged me and I knew you will do it. It was my leaders’ faith in me which made me conquer the mighty mountain.

“The wings of our dreams are spread till there; we can touch the earth and sky from where”.

Captain Divya Ajith Kumar, Inspiring Women To Join The Armed Forces

0
Captain Divya Ajith Kumar

Captain Divya Ajith Kumar, Inspiring Women To Join The Armed Forces. Women have been called queens for a long time but the kingdom given them isn’t worth ruling. Misogyny, sexual harassment, verbal and physical violence and gender bias is a way of life for even India’s women of privilege. But for decades women have found a simple way to keep themselves and others afloat during difficult times: the power of advice.

These are all objects. Women have turned pretence into an art form. Learn to say no. No is a complete sentence. Never take advice from someone with bad eyebrows. When you are presented with opportunities lean in, but always say yes please, because now you are smart enough to be grateful. If you can read this consider yourself lucky. Give back. There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women. Create something: a garden, a painting, a baby, a legacy. Leave behind some proof you existed. Try to meet people in person. Be tactile.

Captain Divya Ajith Kumar, Inspiring Women To Join The Armed Forces
Captain Divya Ajith Kumar, Inspiring Women To Join The Armed Forces

Be silly. Stop hiding behind the internet. Stop hiding in general. Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage. Cultivate nonconformity and insouciance. When you make your peace with authority, you become authority. Have some ambition, learn courage. Most of the time tears are pointless. Be financially independent so that you love only for love. Accept the ageing process by simply considering the alternative. Don’t have any kind of operation that makes you look like a doll or a statue or a duck. Worklife balance is an urban myth. As she show so well, being a woman is a nice job, if you can get it.

Because she’s a pioneer and led an all-woman contingent of 154 women officers and cadets of the Indian Army this Republic Day. While women officers have been participating in previous Republic Day parades, this was the first time that an all-women’s contingent of the armed forces marched down Rajpath.

Because she created history as the first woman Army cadet to have been awarded the prestigious ‘Sword of Honour’ at the passing out parade of the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai in 2010. A total of 244 cadets, including 63 women, passed out of the OTA that year.

Because she wants more women to join the Army. Although she now teaches at Officers Training Academy in Chennai she travels to schools and colleges to talk to students and inspire them to consider a life serving the nation by choosing a career in the Armed Forces.

British Tank Crushes Learner Driver’s Car In Germany

0
Germany has many foreign military bases and it's common to see armoured vehicles on public roads in the country.

There’s a lot to remember when you’re a learner driver but a pretty good rule is: don’t pull out in front of tanks.

That’s what happened to an 18-year-old driving this Toyota Yaris in the Lippe district of Germany on Monday.

According to local police she pulled out in front of a column of British military vehicles travelling on a ring road around the town, often used by British forces stationed nearby to transport tanks and other armoured vehicles.

The driver of the tank, a 24-year-old British serviceman, wasn’t able to bring his Challenger 2 tank to a stop in time.

Inevitably, in a battle between 62-tonnes of armour and a one-tonne hatchback, there was only going to be one winner.

Luckily the driver of the car was completely unharmed in the incident, and the tank crew pulled her free.

The car, however, suffered 12,000 euros (£8,600) worth of damage.

The tank, not entirely surprisingly – was unscathed.British tank crushes learner driver's car in Germany

Germany has many foreign military bases and it’s common to see armoured vehicles on public roads in the country.

A British army spokesperson told Newsbeat: “Our driving crews go through a very vigorous process before being allowed on the roads and both crews and vehicles are checked regularly.

“It is something we do take very, very seriously, especially with beasts of that size travelling on public roads.”

Gorkha Soldier from Indian Army Saves Girl from Rape and Takes on 40 Train Robbers with Only A Khukuri

Gorkha Soldier from Indian Army Saves Girl from Rape and Takes on 40 Train Robbers with Only A Khukuri. “The band of about 40 robbers, some of whom were travelling as passengers, stopped the train in the Chittaranjan jungles in West Bengal around midnight. Shrestha– who had boarded the train at Ranchi in Jharkhand, the place of his posting–was in seat no. 47 in coach AC3.

“They started snatching jewelry, cell phones, cash, laptops and other belongings from the passengers,” Shrestha recalled. The soldier had somehow remained a silent spectator amidst the melee, but not for long. He had had enough when the robbers stripped an 18-year-old girl sitting next to him and tried to rape her right in front of her parents. He then took out his khukuri and took on the robbers.

Gorkha Soldier from Indian Army Saves Girl from Rape and Takes on 40 Train Robbers with Only A Khukuri

“The girl cried for help, saying ´You are a soldier, please save a sister´,” Shrestha recalled. “I prevented her from being raped, thinking of her as my own sister,” he added. He took one of the robbers under control and then started to attack the others. He said the rest of the robbers fled after he killed three of them with his khukuri and injured eight others…“Fighting the enemy in battle is my duty as a soldier; taking on the dacoits in the train was my duty as a human being,” said the Indian army nayak.
