WAT Practice Set
WAT Practice Set

In our quest to clear all the basic doubts regarding the SSB testing procedure, we bring to you another installment. This time we will be shedding some light on the Word Association Test (WAT). The Word Association Test is the second test in the psychological test series. It is conducted immediately after the Thematic Apperception Test.

Word Association Test : METHOD

In the same projector screen where the TAT pictures were shown a word flashes conspicuously for 15 seconds. You are required to see that word and write down the first thought which comes to your mind in these 15 seconds. It is advised that one writes the response in a sentenced form. After the 15 seconds, a second word flashes on the screen for another 15 seconds and you have to write another response. This cycle continues for 60 words. In short you have 15 minutes for 60 words. As the time is quite less, the original thoughts and ideas come out through the sentences you associate with the word flashed.

The words in Word Association Test are not just taken at random. These are specially selected and sometimes, arranged in a particular pattern or group so that the psychologists may be able to come to conclusions about these responses to enable them to assess the candidate’s personality. With the help of this test, the psychologists understand or get a fair idea of the candidate’s personality, his likes and dislikes, his achievements, his emotional attitudes and temperament.

Word Association Test : POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • It is not a test of language or grammar, so do not worry about the beauty of the sentence, concentrate on the correct ideas.
  • You are advised to write the first idea which comes to your mind when you see the word. Try to remain natural
  • Avoid using phrases or short forms. Try to form a complete sentence
  • You are not required to define or convey the meaning of the word. You are required to associate the first thought which comes to your mind with the word.
  • Please do not memorize readymade words.
  • You can use the same word or you can use its derivatives. Eg- happy, happiness, happily
  • Write positive constructive and meaningful sentences.
  • Do not write negative and anti social responses.
  • Try and write short sentences to come up trump with the time.

You should write reactions that show the good qualities of your personality, your strong points and not your weaknesses. The psychologists are looking for qualities of leadership in the candidates.

Back To The Basics- Thematic Apperception Test

9
TAT-blank-slide

Greetings to our readers, we have been receiving emails regarding some elementary doubts in the SSB selection procedure. So, we have decided to clear all the doubts one by one by reiterating the procedure from the basic level. Today, we will be discussing the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) in detail. The Thematic Apperception Test is the first test of the psychological test series in the SSB interview.

Now, the dictionary meaning of ‘Apperception’ is as follows “the mental process by which a person makes sense of an idea by assimilating it to the body of ideas he or she already possesses”. In other words it is a psychological test which brings out the inner (hidden) thoughts of the individual which he/she might not normally reveal.

Thematic Apperception Test: METHOD

The candidates are made to sit in a big hall with a projector screen; all the candidates are given a booklet. A hazy picture is shown at the screen for 30 seconds; you are required analyze the picture in the 30 seconds given and frame (write in the booklet) a story around the picture in the next 4 minutes, then again you are shown a hazy picture for 30 seconds and you are required to write a new story based on the picture shown. This procedure continues till the eleventh picture and after that a 12th and final picture is projected which is generally a blank one in which you can write whatever story you want to write.
This is a time based approach which reveals the inner self of an individual quite easily. The test is based on the theory that in the construction of stories around hazy pictures, the candidate organizes material from his own personal experiences, partly as a result of the stimulus that he receives (what he finds in the picture) and partly his association with stimuli recalled from his past experiences. The psychologists read your stories and frame an opinion about your personality. As one doesn’t know how he has performed in the psychological tests, it often becomes a hard nut to crack for the aspirants.

Thematic Apperception Test: KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER

  1. THE HERO: – Each story must have a hero or the chief character with whom the writer identifies himself and who should exhibit qualities which an officer in the armed forces should possess, He should act and behave like a normal human being and not like a Superman or Spiderman.
  2. Apart from the Hero, you must identify other characters in the picture that help the hero in the execution of the task.
  3. SITUATION IN THE STORY:- Your story should contain the following features
  • What was the picture all about or what is going on in the picture?
  • How it came about or what events led up to it?
  • What will be the outcome or inference?
  1. THE PLOT:
  • It is an attempt by the hero, assisted by the other characters to organize the story by utilizing all the resources at his disposal in order to successfully solve the problem.
  • It should be pleasing and end successfully.
  • It should be self evident. The reader must not be in any doubt in the end of the story.

Thematic Apperception Test: FINAL COMMENTS

  • Relate your story to the picture; you must frame the story around the characters and the situation shown in the picture. Digression from the picture will be termed as ‘wishful thinking’.
  • Identify the problem in every story and go around getting it solved by the hero, who in turn uses the available resources to solve the problem.
  • It is advised that if the Hero is of your age, then it becomes easier for you to relate to him and write a story. However, it is not necessary.
  • Please do not write MEMORIZED STORIES. You will be caught as the memorized story won’t conform to your personality. Listen to the stimulus in your mind instead.
  • It is advised that you practice writing 10 stories daily within 4 minutes to increase your writing speed.

Best PPDT Story Writing Tips for SSB

2
PPDT in SSB

Best PPDT Story Writing Tips: Picture perception and discussion test in short PPDT, is a famous test conducted by SSB under stage 1 testing. PPDT is something which makes most of us nervous, as it plays an important role during screening test, apparently your screening test result is totally depends on your performance in PPDT. Most of the candidates make mistakes which spoil their performance during PPDT, one of the biggest mistake is writing a bad story in PPDT. Bad story in PPDT doesn’t really mean something meaningless or writing something in wrong English, but their are various factors which candidates must consider while writing a story which are not followed by the candidates while writing a story in PPDT. Here we are going to talk more about how to write an excellent story in PPDT and improve your performance.

Do you get nervous in PPDT? Are you still confused what to do in PPDT and how to perform better in PPDT to clear stage 1 screening test? If yes, you are on the right page, here we will be giving must follow instructions for PPDT.

PPDT Story Writing

  1. Remember, PPDT consists of story writing and group discussion, both are equally important. When coming to story writing, we must remember that what we write, directly or indirectly shows our qualities. Always write a meaningful story, it could be something you have experienced in your personal life or heard from someone else. Your story must reflect your intellectual level and also a practical approach.
  2. Having said that, avoid writing something which is no where related to what is being shown on the screen. This shows your poor reaction and lack of thinking, if assessors catch you writing something inappropriate or something which you have already prepared back at home, you have no chance of clearing the screening test.
  3. So how to deal with the situation where nothing is coming in your mind and you are not able to write something? First of all this is not a actual problem, the real problem is when an aspirant made up his mind of writing something extraordinary to impress the assessors with his/her story and assume that he/she will get a picture related to a story which he/she has already prepared. So avoid thinking too much before the picture is to you and keep your mind clean and calm.
  4. What to do when you see the picture, here most of the candidates do not care to look at the picture for 30 secs which is a given time, this is because they look at the picture and try to fix the picture with one of the stories they have already prepared. This is dangerous and ruin your chances in SSB. If your story is completing matching with the picture then go ahead and write the same, but this is called taking chance. The better way is to prepare something original, because original is always interesting and attracts more ears while you narrate the same.
  5. We are not going to talk about what is being asked in PPDT and how to write a story, as we have already covered enough on the same. You could follow the links given below for more tips on PPDT:

  4. PPDT and TAT Best Sample Stories

PPDT Narration Tips

  1. Speak Loudly, be clear what you are trying to say. When you speak loud it shows you are confident enough.
  2. While narrating the story, speak to the point because you might not get enough time to complete the whole story but you should make sure that you have narrated the gist of your story. Narration is the best way to show your confidence and competitiveness for 5 days ssb interview. Don’t be lazy during narration and make sure you are making eye contact while speaking.
  3. Keep siting while speaking, do not move your hands frequently and make sure you do not fumble. There is no scope for an error while narrating so make sure you have prepared your story narration for PPDT beforehand.
  4. During group discussion, keep sitting straight and do not move back and forth, avoid touching and pointing others. Do not shout unless it is really required. Do not look at the assessors at any given point of time during PPDT.
  5. Try to help group to prepare a story, agree more and argue less.
  6. Do not pin point others for a bad story and also do not force someone to speak if they do not want to. This will be a negative mark for you, it is better to speak first and make your chances rather then giving a chance to someone who is not interested to speak.
  7. If you feel your story is better than others, do support it with logical points but do not force your story on others.

5 Mistakes To Avoid During GTO Tasks

5 Mistakes To Avoid During GTO Tasks

Group task is a method in the SSB selection procedure to check your compatibility in working with a group, as well as your leadership skills. It consists of a number of tests, total nine in number. Many of these tests are conducted in group, while some are conducted on individual level. Group tasks provide you with a great chance to score and hence increase your marks in SSB. With a little attention and precaution you can perform really well in this part of testing, and thus score good marks too. Given below are some common mistakes which candidates should try to avoid in GTO Tasks

5 Mistakes To Avoid During GTO Tasks

  1. Ignorance in GTO Tasks: Ignorance is never bliss in SSB. Never ever take the path of ignorance, because if you do so, you might as well end up in spoiling your results. Candidates generally overlook a lot of things, and ignore them, considering them not so important. But the GTO never overlooks anything. Whatever you do is being observed by him, very keenly and closely. SO if you commit a mistakes, accept it and start afresh. You might be tempted to overlook the mistake thinking that the GTO is not watching you, but that is definitely not the case.
  2. The mistake of not listening in GTO Tasks: I can guarantee one thing, that if you start listening what the GTO is saying, you’ll definitely be able to improve your performance to a considerable level in SSB. The problem is that, the instructions are very long, so when the GTO says the instruction you get bored in-between, and loose track. This is especially true for the repeaters, and people who go there after attending coaching’s. They think that they know the instructions, and do not pay the required attention to them. If you listen to them carefully, you see that whatever they want out of the task is spoken in the instructions itself.
  3. Leadership vs. Dominance in GTO Tasks: It is a different thing to lead, and entirely different when you dominate someone. Definitely they want leaders, but the leadership definition is very different from the definition of dominance. A good leader is the one who can take all his subordinates and work in a positive direction. Whereas if you’ll just keep giving orders it’ll be nothing more than dominance. As a leader you should first go ahead and lead others by your own example.
  4. Speaking on others behalf in GTO Tasks: There are candidates who act like absolute mediators. They think that they have been given the responsibility to speak on others behalf. Candidates feel that if they are encouraging the weaker members they are actually emerging as leaders. They make a mistake here. Of course you should encourage the weaker members, but this does not mean that you should speak on their behalf, it really looks like acting. The most you can do is encourage them to speak by listening to them when they are speaking. Everybody is responsible for themselves; you do not need to take anybody’s responsibility.
  5. Fixing things up in GTO Tasks: Few smart candidates think that they should fix up things in advance, like asking people and deciding amongst the group that who should call whom in the command task, or how to proceed in the group discussion. Dude this is not going to help, any amount of manipulation that you do is not going to work, in fact you’ll see the opposite things happening. So it is rather better to spend the time in preparation instead of try to convince people shrewdly.

Hope now you know what mistakes to avoid during GTO tasks. In you have more tips regarding SSB GTO tasks do write them in the comment section below.

Learn From The Movie SAVING PRIVATE RYAN

0
saving-private-ryan

(Testimony: I do not intend to hurt no one’s feeling by suggesting English movies.  What I care is to refer you the best in the world. Also what you read here is not a copy-waste. This is what I felt inside when I saw under mentioned movies)

I used to suggest war movies like ‘Tango Charlie, Border, Black hawk down, etc when someone asks, to know about a soldier’s life and military operations. And I added one more movie to this group; it is 2014 released ‘Fury’. It’s such a nice movie, about 5-6 soldiers destined to fight with a Tank during a war.  But now I suggest just one movie and it is SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.

Learn From The Movie ‘SAVING PRIVATE RYAN’

As considering it as the best among several war movies, I would like to list out what we get when we watch SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, FURY and PEARL HARBOR.

  1. A Cool Captain, Emotional and Protective Enough (Both Tom Hanks and Brad Pit). A leader must be like this. He is a brave heart who leads a group of soldiers. Consoling them, motivating them, leading them by showing the way ahead.  In no situation he was out of ideas and bravery.
  2. Timing for Action. In the commencing 30 minutes of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, a soldier is taking his helmet off only to kiss it after it saved him from a direct hit. And in next second what Tom Hank (Capt.) sees is his dead body besides him. The movies well depicts the situation which needs excellent timing, to fire, to load weapon, to wait for Captain’s Order, to run across, even to grunt upon his buddy’s death.
  3. Reality of War. People are getting killed in a matter of seconds. Both sides suffer and there is blood, body parts everywhere. THE FIRST 30 MINUTES OF SAVING PRIVATE RYAN IS A MUST WATCH. You could see a soldier looking for his right arm which got detached in heavy shelling. Another soldier is lying down; half dead and besides him we could see his intestine which came out as his belly got busted in .50 Cal’s firing.

“There is no time needed at all to turn a children’s’ park into a cemetery”

  4. Soldiers Life – Before and During War. You will see how a soldier serves, what he/she do during peacetime. You will also see what they do and what happens to them on war zone. All 3 movies alike make you say that Dying is Better than Getting Injured. The only difference between life in peacetime and war time is the former will be up to your expectation and the latter will be beyond your expectation. Simply Unbelievable.
  5. There is no one like Old War Buddies. Have you ever been asked by a friend for a piece of chewing gum when it was in your mouth?? Well, you could see one in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Have you ever had a friend who always watches your back?? Well, and then watch Pearl Harbor.

And finally, war is nothing personal. You can still find humanity in there.

IT’S NOT YOUR ARMOR OR AMMUNITION, BUT THE FLAG OF YOUR COUNTRY PATCHED ON YOUR UNIFORM, WHICH MAKES YOU AN ENEMY.

What Should Be The Next Step After AFCAT?

0
What Should Be The Next Step After AFCAT

It has been few days that AFCAT has got over, and I can see the buzz on the social media about the probable solutions and aspirants eagerly matching answers, discussing about the cut-offs and other such issues but I feel sad that at some forums the discussion is going in the wrong direction because what should be discussed is not being taken up by many.  I can understand that gen- y is little less on patience level and specially this generation youth needs things at the lights pace, but still matching answers and discussing about what would be the cut-off is in no one’s hand except the air force authorities. I have been receiving queries on what could d be the probable cut-off this time. I would say one has a very clear idea about the performance in the entrance exam, so the ideal thing to do in this period is to design the strategy of future.

Next Step After AFCAT

For those who have done well I will suggest start preparing for SSB, as air force authorities usually declare result in about a months’ time so you don’t have much time as once the result for written is declared, SSB starts immediately. So start working as SSB is all about personality and let me make you clear that developing personality is not a day’s job it needs a lot of time, effort and dedication to do so. Those who know they have not performed well are still waiting for some miracle and praying to GOD that the cut-off should be low because the paper was tough. My suggestion would be to start preparing for the next written as that might help for a miracle and can get you recommended. The following steps can help in future preparations:

  • Defence is a place where luck factor hardly works so your hard work can only get your dream true. Work for it.
  • Start immediately for SSB preparation as that will anyways not go waste and will help in realising yourself thus resulting in improvement in personality.
  • Self-introspection with deep thoughts is the best technique to master and review oneself. On one hand it tells about your OLQ’s and on the other end it tells about the weak zones that need a build-up.
  • Start early as personality is something which gets eroded from the environment you live in, people you are surrounded, etc. and needs time for improvement. So the more time you spend in analysis, the more easily you get selected.

Analysis is really important for personality to gauge the flaw. Still If you have any confusion or feel to take individual assessment of personality for olq’s or prepare from your place itself through one to one interaction through my mentoring / counselling program drop me a mail at [email protected] or add me on Fb and drop in a message. You will get a revert for your queries and it would be a pleasure to help serve the future officers. But remember to achieve goal start working hard on personality aspects and you will surely achieve your dream.

Life Changing Decisions For SSB

0
ssb interview tips

“Sometimes the smallest step in right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tip toe if you must but take the step.” Someone has rightly said that constant movement in the right direction is better than taking large leaps towards success as that might not be permanent. Small steps lead to big success. Walk tip toe if needed to reach your goal because whatever small you do for working towards your goal is just a small step towards success. You need to cover a large distance and then only can see the glory of winning. In this way there will be thousands of problems and many stoppages but you need not stop and just continue walking. Consistency is the only key that can take you towards your goal of clearing the SSB. Why because:

Life Changing Decisions For SSB

  • Never break trust of anyone. The place you aspirant are aspiring to go need utmost purity. Maintain the dignity of the place and try to live life like an officer always .
  • Life has a lot to offer, never lose hope.
  • Work hard consistently.
  • Don’t look for shortcuts they are only helpful in solving maths problem that too when basics are clear. Work hard to achieve so that you can be proud of that.
  • Try and try till you succeed.
  • De motivation is the biggest enemy for anyone. Don’t allow it to come near you.
  • Time management is the funda that needs to be learnt.
  • Never feel bad for people who laugh at you, they do it because they cannot do anything else. Say thank you to them because they are your real motivators as they make you realise that you have still lot to achieve and reach to heights where such people can’t reach

I know it’s difficult to accept failure and it’s difficult to try again but don’t feel bad. Always keep trying. I am sure you will in course of time fins a reason of why you were out or failed a particular time. Life gives reason for everything, might be not instantaneously but later in life. And the best way to find reasons of failure in SSB is self-introspection. History has seen that whosoever has mastered this technique has done wonders in life. I have seen many incidences in my course of life where life had snatched everything , I felt like leaving everything but then the ray of hope sprinkled more courage over me, strong will and dedication towards my aim forced me to work more hard. I achieved a lot and felt like I have done a lot in life. But then suddenly a push back and again came to the same point where I started from. This life is so tricky and such a viscous circle that no one has ever understood what it wants. And believe me that’s the fun of life.

Hope these are some of the useful points that I use and have experienced in life. They really helped me achieve a lot and push back big difficulties. Still you need to share your personal problems related to any facet of life, you can drop me a mail for personal counselling, individual mentoring related to SSB at [email protected] or drop me a message at Facebook with the problem. I would be really pleased to help future officers who are in a process of getting ready to protect my motherland.

While I was planning to write something for the blog on one side I was appreciating idea of our Prime Minister Modi on the other side for declaring a new theme for the republic day which was Women based because he wanted to show the power of Indian women to the strongest nation. It was first time in history when the guard of honour was a woman. That’s the pride of our nation. Times are changing and we are nowhere living in dark ages where woman is just confined to four walls of house, or they are illiterate and would only do the household work.  They have moved a step ahead and they are managing both the sectors well. They are taking care of home and job simultaneously. They are raising the horizons and have reached till the moon. They are there on the Everest and are occupying many successful positions like CEO, CMD, etc.

GD Topic Series: Are Women Fit To Join Indian Defence Forces

Earlier defence sector was skeptical whether women will be able to manage the physical toughness needed for the job, but our Indian pride has left every convention behind and is doing wonders. That’s why at many places where women entry was restricted in the defence having now been opened for our ladies and they are as successful as men counterpart. Women are restricted to enter the fields in defence where more often the work needs physical stamina, but yes they are doing good in technological field and administrative services. But now the view point is changing and they are allowed to manage fields also. They are provided physical training which is nowhere less then what is provided to men. Every coin has a flip side as well. There might be cases arising for sexual harassment or other such things but I think women are not afraid of any such thing and are ready to serve the nation with full pride.

These are just my viewpoints but we can also speak about the flaw of this thing. GD always have the advantage of presenting the viewpoints in a balanced fashion.  Just remember to follow the basic etiquette’s of the team participation and GD is an easy round for all. Selection is purely based on the content knowledge, group behaviour, confidence and body language. Communication apart from this plays an important role. Body language in such an exercise is very important and I would deal it in a separate article. Still If you have any confusion or feel to take individual assessment of personality for olq’s or prepare from your place itself through one to one interaction through my mentoring / counselling program drop me a mail at [email protected] or add me on Fb and drop in a message. It would be a pleasure to help and resolve queries and clear doubts which are more often myths .So keep working hard and practice is the only key to success in such rounds.
