The elements of a successful interview

1
Interview is the easiest yet the trickiest part of SSB. Easiest because unlike the other tests, which comprise a number of small tests, in the battery, interview is just one test carrying major weightage. So a huge part of your selection depends on this test. It is tricky because you can never say whether your interview was good or bad. People who get thrashed in the interview get selected many times, and those who think their interview went like a cake walk, do not make it. And thus we call it tricky! However there are a few elements which contribute to a successful interview.

The elements of a successful interview

  1.  That smile, will take you miles: When you enter the room of the interviewing officer, you should not look unduly tensed or worried. Once you wish him, wish him with a smile on your face. Trust me, it’ll lighten up the situation. It’s understandable that you are tensed, but if you’ll smile in that stressed environment, it’ll reflect a great deal of positivity. The officer will sense that you are a confident person immediately.
  2. The walk and talk guide: You should enter the room smartly and not slouch while sitting. Shake hands firmly, if offered, and never offer a hand shake from your side. While talking, keep an audible tone, that is your tone should be neither too loud nor too feeble. It should be just like you are talking to a friend sitting a little distance away from you. Never try to speak in a fake accent, that sounds really funny!
    ssb interview
  3. When in SSB, speak the truth: Lie is a strict no for an officer to be. You can lie, if you are sure enough to defend it. But lies are caught over the course of time and also keep in mind that the person sitting in front of you is an expert. Interviewing officers are like the old and experienced mechanics of candidates, they have seen so many candidates and caught so many lies that they can easily catch yours. So make sure you never lie in the interview. This applies to the PIQ form also.
  4. Remember, he is a lazy guy: Every man is lazy by nature, so for every short question give a long answer. For instance, if he asks you where are you from, then give a detailed description of the place you are coming from. The more you speak, lesser questions he’ll ask, so definitely you need to speak your heart out. This way you’ll manage the time for the interview also, he’ll be satisfied to have learnt a lot from you and you’ll control your interview.
  5. Never beat around the bush: If you don’t know an answer for something, simply say no, rather than doing a guess work. You can guess but say that you are not sure. This shows honesty. Similarly never exaggerate anything you say. So keep your emotions under control and keep your mind open while answering, so that you know what you are speaking.

Passion, a word misused

0
Passion is a very strong emotion, not to be taken lightly. Passion is often associated with something you are crazy about, something for which you can do anything. People often associate passion with love and romance, which is yet another strong feeling. But here we’ll be taking about the passions which you may have in your life. It’ll be not wrong if I’ll say that if you really want to achieve something, you should be willing to do anything and everything to accomplish it. This whole emotion can be easily translated into one word that is passion. If you are passionate about something you are sure to get it, some day or the other. Many candidates go in the SSB and say that they are passionate to join the forces, they forget that this is a very string word, and thus shouldn’t be used lightly, as already said. If you go and say that you are passionate to join the forces, you should have evidence to prove that.

I know somebody who went and said in his interview that he is passionate about airforce, and when the officer asked him a few questions regarding airforce, in the later part of the interview, he couldn’t answer. So it was proved in minutes that he is not passionate about what he said.

How to tell if you are passionate about something:

  1. The first and most important thing is that you’ll have immense knowledge about that subject. If you like football, you must be having knowledge about its tournaments, some players, but if you are passionate about football you must know in and out of it. You must know every player, every club, pretty much everything.
  2. If your passion is a goal, you’ll never let it go. You’ll never say die, no matter how many times you face failure. You’ll leave no stone unturned to accomplish that goal and you’ll try again and again, learning a new thing from every failure you face.
    Passion%2C%2Ba%2Bword%2Bmisused

So in the interview when you are asked the reason why you want to join the forces, and you say that you are passionate about it, it is a very wrong way. You can be passionate about certain things in the forces, you can’t say that you are passionate about the fauj itself! You can be passionate about getting the uniform, you can be passionate about flying, aircrafts or weapons, or you can be passionate about ships. You can also be passionate about some sports or some hobby of yours, because of which you may want to join, as in the forces you get a fair chance to play and pursue you dream.
Passion is a very positive word, it channelizes your energies in a right direction. Every human who has a passion for something, has a very strong and positive personality. If you have passion for any hobby, or any anything, be it books, games or coins, you can always look forward to life.>

Determination: Something That Keeps You Going

0
determination

Things come easy for some of us, and for some of us they require a lot of hardwork, patience and testing times. While your friend might get the thing he desired for, in one shot, the same thing may require you to burn midnight oil. Hard earned things have more importance, more value and are special in their own way. The goals we set for ourselves are big. It is natural to set high standards to achieve. So what to do if you fail back to back, in getting your goals? Just keep going that is what is the gist of this article.

Determination is a great quality. It requires time to be developed. What is determination? It is the thing that keeps you going, even when everything is not in favor, just because you decided to go on. Determination is a quality which keeps you away from the fear of failure, and makes you brave enough to try again and again. Many dreams we have, are failed from being turned into reality just for the fear of failure. Often you realize that you gave up, when you were just a step away from the thing that you desired.Being a defence aspirant, you might have faced SSB, and failed there as well.

ssbinterviewbook

My guess is that if you opened up this article for reading, then definitely you are somebody who is trying hard to achieve his/her goals. Believe me you can achieve your goal, and your determination will keep you going for that. And everybody has that determination in them, its just you need to be good enough to recognize it and let it guide you. Determination is not some magical quality, it is small realist things which you do, to cherish your dreams.

  1. If you have tried for SSB many times and are clueless what goes wrong, seek an expert help. This help may be from a coaching institution, or from somebody you know, who has been in the board, and knows the things. You need to find out what is going wrong, otherwise there is no point in trying again, with the same approach.
  2. If you are tired of giving it a try again and again, and tired of people mocking you for that, then you just need to realize that it is your life. Nobody can do anything unless you want them to. Never give up because somebody else is saying you to. It might be that the opportunity you missed by listening to others, was the one which was going to change your world.
  3. Never give up, not yet, not until you are no more eligible to try.
  4. Do not waste time by running after it. Join a course, join a job and keep on giving your SSB’s as they come.
  5. Determination is the power which will make you work, and work hard, even if you have done 12 hours of job. If you are determined to achieve your goal, you’ll still sit down and prepare, and never procrastinate anything.

Hobbies, Extra Curricular Activities and Sports in PIQ Form

3

Personal Information Questionnaire, or the PIQ form, holds a great importance in turning the tides for you interview and forming the basis of your selection criteria. The PIQ form needs to be filled in very carefully and properly. This is because it is the basis on which your personality will be judged. There are several columns present in the PIQ form, each of them is equally important, but some are like the crux of it. In this article we’ll be dealing with the columns of Sports, Extracurricular Activities and hobbies.

Hobbies, Extra Curricular Activities and Sports in PIQ Form

The Officer Like Qualities which you need to show in the SSB, can be projected very well from these columns. Sports define the kind of person you are. If you are involved in indoor games only, it means you are more of an introvert, while if you play no sport then that means you are a dull person. It is however important to develop a habit to play some sport. You must have heard “All work and no play, makes jack a dull boy”. Here it is “All work and no play, makes you an incomplete person”.
Extra-curricular activities again form an inseparable part of a complete personality. These activities show that you have a complete, developed personality. If you take part in extra-curricular activities, it shows that you have a desire to learn things out of your academic background also. If you have been taking part in intra and inter college/school events, representing your class/institution then it projects your efficiency and capabilities. Winning things in events shows that you have the potential to be recognized at a level. It also depicts your leadership qualities. All these things are very important from the SSB point of view, as these things form an integral part of an officers personality. Being an officer you’ll be expected to not only perform your duty wisely but also to manage a lot of other things. From bunkers to ballrooms, you’ll be expected to master everything. It is said that an officer is perfect in everything.

piq form ssb
Hobbies tend to relax a person under stress. They make you a unique person and show that you have a habit to engage yourself in developing your mind. Hobbies are something which are not a part of daily work, they are something in which you indulge yourself in your free time. They are something in which you are interested in. There can be a variety of hobbies like reading, dancing, collecting something etc.

Tips

  • You should know in and out of what you are mentioning in these column heads. If you are writing about some particular sport, you are expected to know about it thoroughly. Same applies to hobbies also.
  • If you are writing about any extra-curricular activity, then you should be in a position to explain it. To tell when did you win what and to tell about that event.
  • Do not leave these columns blank. Suppose you have never played a sport on a noteworthy level, then too write something which you have just played on a casual level. In the level you can write ‘played casually’

How To Be Successful This Year

The dictionary meaning of resolution is “a firm decision to do or not to do something”. For us resolution is “a decision which you make on 31st December and forget on 1st January”.  I know there won’t be any scarcity of resolutions around you but still  I am penning down some resolutions, out of them you can adopt some, to become a better human/citizen. Some resolutions are based on total humor, the aim is to make you laugh! You can comment some of the resolutions which you have already taken, or at least one resolution which you took and fulfilled!

How To Be Successful This Year

  1.  Throw garbage only in the dust-bins. It’s your country, keep it clean. If you won’t take a step, no Prime Minister can make any scheme to keep the country clean.
  2. Do not waste water. The world is already suffering a shortage of this most essential colorless, transparent, odorless, liquid, without you wasting it.
  3. Intervene people if you see them throwing garbage on the street, or wasting water pointlessly.
  4. The next time you go for a dinner party buffet, don’t fill your plate with food you know you are going to throw. Take only what you can eat.
  5. Instead of instagramming, facebooking or twittering about an issue, go out and do something about it. Making a black dot as your Profile Picture is not going to help anybody.
  6. Inculcate reading habits. It’ll give you an edge in everything, as you’ll gain considerable amount of knowledge.
How To Be Successful This Year
  7. Spend some time/talk on the phone everyday with you parents and grandparents. They have put in a lot of effort in raising you up, and they understand that you are very busy, still if you find time for them, you’ll make them more than happy.
  8. Do not curse your country, the government, the roads, the citizens, the cricket team etc. Saare Jahan Se Accha Hindustan Humara. Be the change instead of cribbing.
  9. Be honest, with yourself the most. Period.
  10. Don’t bunk too many classes for the cricket world cup (for big matches it’s okay).
  11. Please (and I really mean please), do not send game requests on facebook to anybody.
  12. Spend one day in a month without your phone, internet and laptop. The key to find connection with you is getting disconnected.
  13. Give some time to yourself, no matter only five minutes, every day.
  14. Do not check your phone/Facebook as soon as you wake up, similarly do not check your phone/email/social network account, 1 hour before you sleep. It has become toxic now.
  15. Watch/Read/Surf the news. Staying updated with the current affairs will help you in many places.
  16. Clean your closet and in fact clean your life with unwanted and unnecessary things. Keep only the things you use/need.
  17. Try to procrastinate as less as possible.
  18. Help somebody every day.
  19. Go for a jog/walk every day.
  20. No matter what, never lose that smile!
