This article gives you a clear idea about all those important formulas on each topic in Numerical ability syllabus as mentioned above starting with the highest weightage topic to lowest weightage topic.

1. Speed, Distance and Time (SDT)

Speed: The distance travelled by any object or a person per unit time is known as speed of that object or a person.

Distance: The length of the path travelled by any object or a person or a vehicle between two places is known as ‘Distance’.

Time: The duration in hours, minutes or seconds spent to cover distance is called ‘Time’.

Conversion of unit: (Most frequently used shortcut in problem solving on SDT topic)

Average Speed: The average speed of an object is defined as total distance travelled divided by total time taken. Shortcut formula

Relative Speed: The speed of an object with respect to other is called relative speed.

Suppose two objects are moving with speeds of x km/h and y km/h respectively, then their relative speed will be;

  • (x + y) km/h, if both the objects
    are moving in opposite direction.
  • (x – y) km/h, if both the objects
are moving in the same direction.

Simple tricks to be followed to solve problems based on Pipes and Cisterns:

  1. Time taken to fill tank is
considered as positive and noted with (+) sign.
  2. Time taken to empty tank is
considered as negative noted with (-) sign.
  3. If a pipe can fill or empty a
tank in x hours, then the part of tank filled or emptied in 1 hour is 1/x.
  4. If pipe can fill or empty 1/x
part of a tank in 1 hour, then it can fill or empty the whole tank in x hours.
  5. If a pipe fills a tank in x
hours and another pipe fills the same tank in t hours. Then total part filled
by both pipes in 1 hour is 1/x + 1/y.

3. Percentage

Per cent is a fraction whose denominator is 100 and numerator of the fraction is called the rate per cent. Per cent is denoted by the symbol ‘%’

image 9

4. Average

Average refers to the sum of observations divided by number of observations. Also called as mean average.

image 10

5. Simple & Compound Interest

Interest is the cost of borrowing money, where the borrower pays a fee to the lender for using the latter’s money. The interest, typically expressed as a percentage, can be either simple or compounded. Simple interest is based on the principal amount of a loan or deposit, while Compound interest is based on the principal amount and the interest that accumulates on it in every period. Since simple interest is calculated only on the principal amount of a loan or deposit, it’s easier to determine than compound interest.

6. Ratio and Proportion

If a and b are two quantities of same kind, then the fraction a/b is called the ratio a to b and we write it as a: b. Here a is called antecedent and b is called the consequent.

Shortcuts for frequently asked Ratio and Proportion problems:

Compound Ratio: When two or more ratios are multiplied together, they are said to be compound ratio.

Duplicate Ratio: when a ratio is compounded with itself, the resulting ratio is called the duplicate ratio.

Triplicate Ratio: If a ratio is compounded three times with itself, then resulting ratio is called triplicate ratio.

Subduplicate Ratio: If two numbers are in ratio, then the ratio of their square roots is called Subduplicate ratio.

Subtriplicate Ratio: If two numbers are in ratio, then the ratio of their cube roots is called Subtriplicate ratio.

Reciprocal Ratio: If a: b is a ratio, then 1/a: 1/b is its reciprocal ratio.

Proportion: The equality of two ratios is called proportion. ‘::’ is the sign of proportion.

image 13

7. Profit & Loss

Cost Price: The price, at which an article is purchased, is called its cost price, abbreviated as C.P.

Selling Price: The, price, at which an article is sold is called its selling price, abbreviated as S.P.

Profit or Gain: If S.P. is greater than C.P. the seller is said to have a Profit or Gain.

Loss: If S.P. is less than C.P. then the seller is said to have incurred a Loss.

image 14

8. Decimal Fractions/Simplification

A decimal fraction is a fraction in which denominator is an integer power of ten. (The term decimals are commonly used to refer decimal fractions). Generally, a decimal fraction is expressed using decimal notation and its denominator is not mentioned explicitly.

Simplification: Rule of ‘BODMAS’: This BODMAS rule depicts the correct sequence in which the operations are to be executed, so as to find out the value of given expression. Full form of BODMAS is B – Bracket, O – of, D – Division, M – Multiplication, A – Addition and S – Subtraction. Thus, while solving or simplifying a problem, first remove all brackets, strictly in the order (), {} and ||. After removing the brackets, we will use the following operations strictly in the following order: (i) of (ii) Division (iii) Multiplication (iv) Addition (v) Subtraction.

15 Common Grammatical Mistakes You Must Avoid In English

0
15 Common Grammatical Mistakes

India is a country with the second highest number of English-speaking populations. A huge number of native English speakers make frequent English slip-ups. Hence, it’s not uncommon for a non-native English speaker to commit grammatical mistakes in writing as well as in conversations in English Language. Grammatical errors come in many forms and can easily confuse and obscure meanings. But to correct your grammatical errors in English, you first need to realize that you are committing the mistakes. Well, you can start by checking through the following list of 15 most common grammatical mistakes, finding out which of them resonate with you the most and making a mental note of them the next time you attempt to write or speak in English.

Defence Exams Online Courses

1. Misused Pronouns

While introducing yourself, it is usually observed that the speaker mixes up both the possessive pronoun ‘myself’ and the subject pronoun ‘I’, and sometimes uses ‘Myself’ as the Subject of the sentence and misses the verb in the process.

E.g., Myself Ramesh. / I myself am Ramesh.  (Incorrect)

         I am Ramesh. (Correct)

2. Misplaced Apostrophes

Apostrophes indicate that a noun owns something. Singular nouns will always add ’s when you’re indicating possession, even if the noun ends with “s.” Plural nouns that do not end in “s” also take an ’s. However, plural nouns that end with “s” have an apostrophe added after the “s.”

E.g.,

  • A womans purse was left on the bus. (Incorrect)
  • A woman’s purse was left on the bus. (Correct)
  • Two dogs use the dish. It is the dogs’s dish. (Incorrect)
  • Two dogs use the dish. It is the dogs’ dish. (Correct)

3. Capitalization

E.g.,

  • one rainy day, i saw sarah at Union street library. (Incorrect)
  • one rainy day, I saw Sarah at Union Street Library. (Correct)

In terms of capitalization, ask yourself three questions:

• Is this the first letter in a sentence? If the answer is yes, then you should capitalize that word. In this sentence, the first word is “one,” so “one” should be capitalized.

• Is this the pronoun “I”? If yes, capitalize. “I” should always be capitalized.

• Am I using a name that someone gave to this thing or person? If yes, capitalize. “Sarah” should be capitalized, and “Union Street Library” should be completely capitalized because it’s the given name of a location.

4. Contractions & How to Use Them

  • They’re vs. Their vs. There

One’s a contraction for “they are” (they’re), one refers to something owned by a group (their), and one refers to a place (there).

E.g., They’re going to love going there — I heard their food is the best!

Don’t mix it from the next time!

  • Your vs. You’re

The difference between these two is owning     something versus actually being something. “Your” is possessive while “you’re” is a contraction of “you are”.

E.g., You made it around the track in under a minute – you’re fast!

How’s your fast going? Are you getting hungry?

  • Its vs. It’s

“Its” is possessive and “it’s” is a contraction of “it is.” Lots of people get confused because “it’s” has an ‘s after it, which normally means something is possessive. But in this case, it’s actually a contraction.

E.g., It’s disgraceful for a political party to have its members turned against its ideologies.

5. i.e. vs. e.g.

Many people use the terms interchangeably when trying to elaborate on a point, but each one means something different: “i.e.” roughly means “that is” or “in other words,” while “e.g.” means “example given” or “for example.” The former is used to clarify something you’ve said, while the latter adds color to a story through an example.

E.g., I told you my wish before, i.e., I want a car, e.g., a Ferrari as my birthday present.

6. Who vs. That

This one is tricky. These two words can be used when you’re describing someone or something through a phrase.

E.g., Lizzy is my best friend who likes ice cream.

When you’re describing a person, be sure to use “who.” When you’re describing an object, use “that.”

E.g., Her computer is the one that overheats all the time.

It’s pretty simple, but definitely one of the commonest mistakes one may commit often.

7. Who vs. Whom vs. Whose vs. Who’s

“Who” is used to identify a living pronoun. If you asked, “Who ate all of the cookies?” the answer could be a person, like myself (“I did”), or another living being (“the dog did”).

“Whom” is a little trickier. It’s usually used to describe someone who’s receiving something, like a letter.

E.g., To whom will it be addressed?

But it can also be used to describe someone on the receiving end of an action.

E.g., Whom did we hire to join our team?

“Whose” is used to assign ownership to someone. So,

E.g., Who’s sweater is that?

Because the sweater belongs to someone, it should actually be written this way:

Whose sweater is that?

“Who’s,” on the other hand, is used to identify a living being. It’s a contraction for “who is”.

E.g., Who’s responsible for the mess you created?

8. In to vs. Into

Let’s clarify the “into” versus “in to” debate. They’re often confused, but “into” indicates movement (e.g., Sarah walked into the office.) while “in to” is used in lots of situations because the individual words “to” and “in” are frequently used in other parts of a sentence. For example, “to” is often used with infinitive verbs (e.g.,to drive“) or “in” can be used as part of a verb (e.g.,call in to a meeting“).

So, if you’re trying to decide which to use, first figure out if the words “in” or “to” actually modify other words in the sentence. If they don’t, ask yourself if it’s indicating some sort of movement — if it does, you’re good to use “into.”

9. Use of Commas

Commas are most commonly used to:

  • Separate Independent Clauses

You can use commas to separate independent clauses      that are joined by “and,” “but,” “for,” “or,” “nor,” “so,” or “yet.” An independent clause is a sentence that can stand on its own. Here’s how to test it: Would the second part of the sentence (following one of those coordinating conjunctions) make a full sentence on its own? If so, add a comma. If it doesn’t, leave it out.

E.g., My brother is very smart, and I’ve learned a lot from him.

  • Separate an Introductory Word or Phrase

At the beginning of a sentence, we often add an introductory word or phrase that requires a subsequent comma.

E.g., In the beginning, I had no idea how to use a comma.

However, after reading an awesome blog post, I understand the difference.

Other common introductory words and phrases include “after,” “although,” “when,” and “while.”

   10.Use of Semicolons

Semicolons are used to connect two independent clauses that, though they could stand on their own, are closely related.

E.g., Call me tomorrow; I’ll have an answer for you by then.

Notice that each clause could be its own sentence — but stylistically, it makes more sense for them to be joined. (If there’s a coordinating conjunction between the two clauses — like “and,” “but”, or “or” — use a comma instead.)

You can also use semicolons to separate items in a list when those items contain commas themselves.

E.g., There are two options for breakfast: eggs and bacon, which is high in protein and low in carbs; or oatmeal and fruit, which is high in carbs but has more fiber.

  11. En Dash vs. Em Dash

Both “–” and “—” are versions of the dash: “–” is the en dash, and “—” or “–” are both versions of the em dash. You can use either the en dash or the em dash to signify a break in a sentence or set off parenthetical statements.

The en dash can also be used to represent time spans or differentiation.

E.g., That will take 5–10 minutes.

The em dash, on the other hand, can be used to set off quotation sources’

E.g., “To be, or not to be, that is the question.” —Shakespeare.”

   12. Affect vs. effect

Affect is a verb – “to affect” – meaning to influence or have an impact on something. Effect is a noun – “a positive effect” – referring to the result of being affected by something. There is also a verb “to effect”, meaning to bring something about – “to effect a change”. However, this is not very commonly used.

E.g.,

  • He waited for the medicine to have an affect. (Incorrect)
  • He waited for the medicine to have an effect. (Correct)
  • They were directly effected by the flooding. (Incorrect)
  • They were directly affected by the flooding. (Correct)

    13. Watch vs. Look vs. See

“See,” “look” and “watch” are often confused in meaning. However, they should be used in different situations. The difference between the three verbs can be explained in the following way:

  • Look — to look at something directly.
  • See — to see something that comes into our sight that we weren’t looking for.
  • Watch — to look at something carefully, usually at something that’s moving.

So, we can “see” something even if we don’t want to, but we can only “look at” something on purpose.

E.g.,

  • Stop watching my private journal. (Incorrect)
  • Stop looking at my private journal. (Correct)
  • I look at the snow falling. (Incorrect)
  • I watch the snow falling. (Correct)
  • I don’t play tennis, but I look at them playing every day. (Incorrect)
  • I don’t play tennis, but I see them playing every day. (Correct)

  14. Since vs. For

You use “for” if you don’t have to calculate the period of time, because the amount of time is indicated in the sentence already. You use “since” if you have to calculate the period of time, because you only have the starting point.

E.g.,

  • I have known him for always. (Incorrect)
  • I saw him since last year. (Incorrect)
  • I have lived here for two months. (Correct)
  • I have lived here since 1995. (Correct)

  15. Dangling Modifiers

This mistake happens when a descriptive phrase doesn’t apply to the noun that immediately follows it.

E.g., After declining for months, John tried a new tactic to increase ROI.

What exactly is declining for months? John? In reality, the sentence was trying to say that the ROI was declining — not John. To fix this problem, try flipping around the sentence structure (though beware of passive voice):

E.g., John tried a new tactic to increase ROI after it had been declining for months.

Better, right? So, the rule is to place the modifier immediately after the noun or pronoun it’s modifying.

Make a mental note of these errors you may commit often while speaking or writing in English. English, like many other languages, has its own set of tricky rules and complexities. But with a little bit of practice and help from guides like this one, you can become an expert in English Grammar. Cracked SSB Interview In 10th and Last Attempt

0

Hello everyone, my name is Nitin, I got recommended in my 10th and the last attempt from SSB Kapurthala via CDS entry on 10/oct/2019 and I am sharing my experience and strategies to help all folks out there which are striving hard and are determined to become army officers. DAY 1/ SCREENING: We were called one day earlier in the evening at Kapurthala on that day only documentation was done.

The next day began with the screening process. OIR was a bit harder as compared to other centers, 2 sets were there and both were updated one, SSBCRACK OIR ebooks, RS Aggarwal will be very helpful to prepare.
PPDT. A very blur picture of an old man wearing a coat background was not clear at all. Only 29 were screened in out of 95 who reported on the first day.

DAY 2/ PHYSIOLOGY: Practicing TAT, WAT, SRT at home with a timer will improve your response and you will be confident and comfortable while giving your physiology test.

I prepared my SD in advance so overall physiology was quite easy to me as some pics in TAT were repetitive.

DAY 3-4/GTO: First GD topic was which ongoing issue has the potential to turn into a worldwide war

  • USA-Iran
  • Abrogation of Article 370
  • Hongkong crises
  • Youth are very stressed nowadays, which could help them to overcome it Technology, professional mentoring, religious practices
  • In GD, some people make the mistake by being dominant or either not speaking at all. Try to make a balance, speak in a clear and confident voice. Reading newspapers will help you for sure.
  • • In GPE be attentive, as even a second of distraction will lead to a big loophole in your final plot. Be cooperative with your group. I gave the conclusion after the GPE and it went well
  • • For PGT, HGT, FGTand other tasks just listen to the briefing of instructions clearly and be cool, calm and confident. By seeing the structure carefully you will be able to draw a solution.

• Command task was a bit difficult as GTO sir made my subordinate to go back and asked me to solved alone handling all the helping material alone, by analyzing the structure and using my helping material I was able to complete the task on time.

ssbinterviewbook

DAY 3/Interview( on the same day in GTO dress ): Interview sir started with the rapid-fire and asked a few mathematical conversion questions like converting speed from km\hr to m\sec and direction based question.

As I was from ECE branch I was asked questions regarding radars, radiowaves and microwaves were also asked.

Most of the question were from PIQ only. I would advise that you know yourself in detail, carefully fill the PIQ form as it plays a very crucial role and be attentive to the question asked by the interviewer. Try to be brief, clear and confident while giving your response. Prepare for the basic technical question if you are going for technical entry and know about the arm you have applied for in detail like army, navy or airforce.

Know about your strength, weakness, what you have done to improve them, sports you play, your role in your family, about your friend, teachers and spare time activities.

DAY 5/ Conference: I was made to sit for 10 minutes outside the conference and inside the conference, I was asked that if I am very satisfied in my corporate life why I want to join the defense force. Also to rate my performance and then I was asked to leave.

When the results were announced I was the only one who was recommended from 29 candidates, I called my parents and my mentor Brig Dixit to tell them the good news and I also want to thank SSBCrack as it well repeaters like me by providing the success stories which fill me with energy and enthusiasm.

OTA Gaya Will Close Soon – Cadets Will Move To IMA

0
ota-gaya-closed

Indian army has decided to close OTA Gaya and move the cadets to IMA Dehradun. Sources in the Army said it was getting evidently infeasible to run the OTA in Gaya due to lesser number of cadets every year.
After the infamous war in Kargil , an increased demand for Army jobs and requirement for more infrastructure for training personnel were contemplated. An army officer informed that however, it clearly did not happen. The number of people who could qualify as officers in the Army was unexpectedly much lesser in number.
Even OTA Chennai faced quite a challenge to fill up half of its available seats as, the officer remarked, Short Service Commission did not come across as an attractive option for people willing to join the Army. He then went on to say that IMA Dehradun had been training about 300 cadets less than its usual strength of 1,650 cadets.

However, the officer added, that the idea to shift the cadets from Gaya to IMA was to utilize the latter fully in terms of its capacity. Other factors were also contributing to the similar idea, one of them being Gaya’s weather, which is excessively humid and unsuitable for military training practices.
However, a second Army officer, when asked about the acute shortage of officers in the force, was of the opinion that such a move could affect plans to maximize the number of in-house officers through promotions from the ranks.

ssbinterviewbook

The source went to include further that the quality of officers who got commissioned into the Army from OTA, Gaya, were among the finest, though steps should be taken in the longer run to improve the strength of the cadets instead of going for any other alternatives.

6 Attempts, 3 Recommendations, 2 Merit Outs, Made It Finally

0
icg-ssb-interview-story

Hello, I’m Hardik. I’m Btech in ECE and I’m from Delhi. I’ve given total 6 attempts of SSB before making it in merit for ICG Assistant Commandant. And the journey had not been smooth. I gave my 1st SSB attempt in March 2018 for AFCAT entry in Varanasi, AFSB-4. I got recommended there. There I had my CPSS for flying branch. I cleared it too. But fate had some other plans and I got medically unfit for flying branch but got fit in ground duties from which I eventually got merit out. That was the highest point of setback in my life. But after 10 days of my merit release I had another SSB lined up. I grabbed the strength and went for it. 2nd attempt was in Bangalore SSB-12 for Indian Navy. I got recommended in that one too but again got merit out! Again, demotivation. Again got up and courageously went for my next SSBs.

3rd and 4th attempts were from AFCAT entry AFSB-1 Dehradun and ICG entry Noida respectively. And I got conference out from both of them. Heartbreaking. But after so many attempts you already become a fauji in a sense and you just don’t give up.

5th attempt was again ICG, and I got recommended there, cleared medicals and everything. But I had stopped relying of merit lists now so I kept on trying for every entry possible.

ssbinterviewbook

Recent was my 6th attempt again from AFCAT entry, again in Varanasi. And I got the worst failure of all my SSB journey when I got screened out for the first time. That was the final nail in the coffin and that’s when I decided to have other things in mind apart from SSBs and have some other back up exams too.

While I was considering other exams and career opportunities, this merit list showed up with my name there! Lesson learnt : After your lowest comes your highest.

spot_img

Many setbacks came. SSB and non SSB related, but I never let anything hamper my SSB performance, nor was I casual in any attempt. SSBCrack has helped me a lot in all my attempts and I’m glad I took help from them. I have learned a lot from their tips and suggestions.

Ups and downs are inevitable. But as Winston Churchill said “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” That’s the only way out.
