Everything You Should Know About EU-India Joint Naval Exercise

On 18-19 June 2021, the EU and India conducted a joint naval exercise in the Gulf of Aden. The exercise involved Indian Navy frigate INS Trikand, EU NAVFOR Somalia – Operation Atalanta assets, including Italian frigate Carabiniere (Atalanta’s flagship) and Spanish frigate Navarra, French frigate Surcouf and French amphibious assault helicopter carrier Tonnerre. The exercise was based on the scenario of an anti-piracy operation. It included cross-deck helicopter landings, complex tactical evolutions at sea, live firing, a night-time joint patrol and a naval parade in the high seas off the coast of Somalia.

The EU and India are committed to a free, open, inclusive and rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region, underpinned by respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, democracy, rule of law, transparency, freedom of navigation and overflight, unimpeded lawful commerce, and peaceful resolution of disputes. They reaffirm the primacy of international law, including the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

In January 2021, the EU and India launched a dialogue on maritime security and agreed to deepen their dialogue and cooperation in this domain. The Indian Navy has been providing escort to World Food Programme chartered vessels, coordinated by EU NAVFOR Somalia – Operation Atalanta. The Indian Navy has previously participated in the Shared Awareness and Deconfliction (SHADE) conference, co-hosted by Operation Atalanta, whose assets conducted several joint exercises with Indian vessels in the past.

The EU and India intend to strengthen their operational cooperation at sea, including joint naval exercises and port calls, and to protect the sea-lanes of communication. They also intend to boost maritime domain awareness in the Indo-Pacific through mutual coordination and exchanges. The EU and India reaffirm their interest to enhance their cooperation in the field of maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Meet Flying Officer G Gopinadh, Auto Rickshaw Driver’s Son Becomes Air Force Officer

Son of an auto-rickshaw driver from Vizag has fulfilled his dream of becoming a commissioned officer in the Indian Air Force. G Gopinadh has been designated as a Flying Officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF) at the graduation ceremony held at the Air Force Academy at Dundigal in Hyderabad on Saturday.

His father, G Suri Babu, who lives in SIG Nagar in Arilova, has been an auto driver for the past 25 years. Despite the financial difficulties, Suri Babu left no stone unturned to educate his son and help him achieve his dream of joining IAF. His efforts were paid off when G. Gopinadh earned coveted pips of Flying Officer and President’s Commissioning into the IAF at the combined graduation parade.

Gopinadh was asked by his father to do engineering, for which he was ready to take a loan. Still, Gopinadh joined IAF against his father’s wishes because of his dream to join forces like his grandfather, who was a sepoy in the Indian Army. Gopinadh had initially joined IAF as an airman after he did Intermediate from Vizag Defence College. According to The Hindu, he has completed his graduation in Dr V.S. Krishna Government Degree College in Hyderabad and his post-graduation in Andhra University. However, he always wanted to become an officer, and his dream came true when he cleared the Staff Selection Commission examination and became an IAF officer, the only one from the two Telugu states – Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, this year.

“My parents have done a lot for me, and I always wanted to give them back and make them proud,” Gopinadh told The New Indian Express. Gopinadh has a sister who works as a lecturer in a private college. He also told how his father used to sleep late at night and get up early in the morning to have some extra income for their needs. “I had worked hard to give better education to my children, and my efforts have yielded fruits now,” said an elated Suri Babu.

“Dreams come true if you make sincere efforts,” Gopinadh said.

This year, the theme of the occasion is ‘Yoga For Wellness’, and will focus on practicing Yoga for physical and mental well-being. Since 2014, the occasion has been observed in mass gatherings in different parts of the country.

Last year and this year, however, the lead event has been presented in a televised programme due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The observation of the International Day of Yoga is a global activity and the preparatory activities normally start 3-4 months prior to June 21. Millions of people are introduced to Yoga in the spirit of a mass movement as part of IDY observation every year.

Yajur Chahal was a unique one and full of motivation for the defence aspirants. Lt. Yajur got recommended for IMA-148 course on 9th Sep 2019 through CDS Entry. It was his 7th SSB interview attempt that got him this success.

DSO- Okay Yajur, I can see that your condition is not at par to appear in this interview. There’ll be many things, outdoor tasks and written tests as well and it’s visible that you can’t open your left eye.

Me- No Sir, I’m pretty much fine!

DSO- Okay Get Up and come with me.

He stood in front of candidates with me and addressed them.

DSO- So, Mr. Chahal is here in a condition you can see. Do you think it’s justifiable to let him go through the process in such a condition?

Candidates- No Sir.

DSO- No doubt, it takes zeal to show up in such a condition, but if He has something inside him, he’ll come back again and will make the great too!

After this, He came with me aside and said

DSO- Look Yajur, I’m here to convince to not to take risks. Health is of first priority, go back home, get proper recovery and come back.

Me- (looking at him in the eye)

With due respect Sir, you’re right! And yes I’m in pain but I can’t just GO BACK!

More Civilian Background Cadets Joining National Defence Academy

Cadets from non-military backgrounds continue to form the largest chunk at the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, shows an internal assessment. The data has been collected by the office of the Chief of Defence Staff. It has been seen in the last six batches that children of military officers collectively form just 5.47 percent of the strength among 1,862 cadets. Children from non-military backgrounds are making the cut, with 1,409 cadets having joined the NDA during the same period. This is 75.67 percent of the 1,862 cadets.

About 18.9 per cent of the cadets at the NDA were from families of Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO) or jawans.

Earlier, the number of children of officers used to be high at the NDA. It was considered a matter of pride for cadets to get commissioned into the same regiment as their fathers’. Over the past 15 years, the numbers have been coming down steadily despite better salaries and assured one rank, one pension on retirement, said a functionary.

CAS Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria reviewed CGP 2021 at Air Force Academy, today marking the successful culmination of training for 161 flight cadets of Flying & Ground duty branches. On the occasion, 6 officers from the Indian Navy & 5 from the Indian Coast Guard were also awarded ‘Wings’.

The President’s plaque & CAS Sword of Honour was awarded to Flying Officer Prajwal Anil Kulkarni from the Pilots’ course, while Flying Officer Kritika Kulhari was awarded the President’s plaque in Ground duty branches.

Flying Officer Prajwal Anil Kulkarni cleared the NDA 2 2016 written exam and SSB interview securing AIR-107 to join the National Defence Academy in 2017. After the completion of 3 years of training at NDA, he joined the Air Force Academy and got commissioned in Flying Branch of Indian Air Force.

Meet Flying Officer Mawya Sudan 12th Woman Fighter Pilot In The Indian Air Force

Flying officer Mawya Sudan from Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district has become the 1st Ever Fighter Pilot From Rajouri J&K and 12th woman officer in the country to be inducted as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force (IAF). Hailing from village Lamberi, Tehsil Nowshera of district Rajouri, Mawya Sudan commissioned into the IAF as Flying Officer.

Flying officer Mawya Sudan, daughter of Sushma and Vinod Sudan has become the first woman officer from Rajouri district to be inducted as a Fighter Pilot in the Indian Air Force. The Fight Pilot’s father, Vinod Sharma, who is a JE in SMVD Shrine Board, told the Excelsior that since her school days, Mawya was included towards Air Force and always wanted to become a Fight Pilot.

The Combined Graduation Parade (CGP) was held at Air Force Academy (AFA) Dundigal Hyderabad on 19 June 2021, marking the successful culmination of training for 161 Flight Cadets of Flying and Ground Duty Branches in the Indian Air Force. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria PVSM AVSM VM ADC was the Chief Guest and Reviewing Officer of the CGP, where he conferred the President’s Commission upon the graduating flight cadets. On this occasion, 6 officers from the Indian Navy and 5 officers from the Indian Coast Guard were also awarded ‘Wings’ on successful completion of their flying training.

The Reviewing Officer was received by Air Marshal RD Mathur PVSM AVSM VSM ADC, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Training Command and Air Marshal IP Vipin AVSM VM Commandant Air Force Academy. Chief of the Air Staff was presented with a general salute by the Parade on his arrival followed by an impressive march past. Highlight of the parade was the ‘Pipping Ceremony’ in which the graduating flight cadets donned their ‘Stripes’ and were awarded ‘Wings’ & ‘Brevets’ by the Chief Guest. The newly commissioned officers were then administered the ‘Oath’ by the Commandant of AFA in the presence of the Reviewing Officer and other dignitaries.

After the ‘Pipping Ceremony’, the Reviewing Officer presented awards to the Trainees who had excelled in various disciplines of their training. Flying Officer Prajwal Anil Kulkarni from Flying branch was awarded the President’s Plaque as well as the Chief of the Air Staff Sword of Honour for standing first in overall order of merit in the Pilots’ Course; while Flying Officer Kritika Kulhari was awarded the President’s Plaque for being first in overall order of merit in Ground Duty branches.

Addressing the Parade, CAS commended the AFA and other Training Establishments for timely completion of the training despite severe Covid constraints placed upon the training infrastructure. He noted the significant milestone achieved by the Air Force Academy in achieving over 20,500 flying hours in the last one year – the highest ever in the Academy’s history.

CAS referred to unprecedented and rapidly evolving security challenges and reminded the young officers that they were entering the IAF at a juncture when a rapid infusion of technologies and combat capabilities was driving a monumental transformation in the Air Force. He also highlighted the change in operational methodologies and functioning with development and operationalisation of major automation and networking projects. He exhorted them to hit the ground running and prove their mettle once they reach the field; in order to exploit the state of art aircraft, weapons, sensors and technologies to their fullest.

The grand ceremony culminated with the newly commissioned officers stepping out in slow march to the traditional notes of ‘Auld Lang Syne’; as they received their first salute from the junior course. They then went past the Saluting Dias and passed through the portals of the Academy, symbolising the beginning of their journey in the IAF.

Flypast by Pilatus PC-7 Mk-II, Hawks, Kirans and Chetaks as well as display by Sarang, Suryakirans & Akash Ganga Sky Diving team added colour and cheer to an impressive graduation parade.

Fake Indian Army Officer Caught, Used To Impress Girls Online

A man has been arrested by the Delhi Police for impersonating an Army officer. Dilip Kumar, 40, is a resident of Mohan Garden in the national capital and was arrested from Greater Kailash-1. According to the police, Dilip used to identify himself as Captain Shekhar, however, he was working as a security guard in a school in the Uttam Nagar area. The Police said that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was also trying to honey-trap the arrested man.

The Delhi Police acted on tip-off and deployed a team at the location where Dilip was rumored to be present. The police team was successful in arresting Dilip who was dressed in Army uniform. A fake ID card and mobile phone have been recovered from him.

According to the police, the accused used to introduce himself as Captain Shekhar of the Indian Army. He used to take his pictures in Army uniform and share them on social media to impress girls. The accused has told the police that he kept this fake identity with the intention of luring girls not only in the country but even abroad.

Police found numbers of girls from India and abroad in his mobile. He had also made video calls to many international numbers. He was a member of nearly 100 WhatsApp groups. The Delhi Police also found phone numbers from Pakistan in his mobile. According to the police’s theory, Pakistani intelligence agents were trying to honey-trap the accused.
