Hello, everyone, I am Baanee from Delhi, for a long time now I have been reading stories on SSBCrack and I always wanted to write one myself. Hence I would like to take this opportunity to share my experience hoping that it would help or inspire someone.
I come from a defence background, hence the passion to wear the uniform was always there because this was not just a job for me it was a way of life that I did not want to stop living. I did my engineering in Electronics and Communication, I took this branch because this branch had a good scope in the armed forces and also in the Govt sector because I knew I did not want to work in the private sector at any cost. In my fourth year I gave AFCAT, appeared for UES Campus selection for Navy. I got my ssb call up for Navy at 12 SSB Bangalore on 22nd February 17. I reported at the railway station and seeing around 400 candidates waiting there with me, that’s what made me a bit nervous. We got through the the document check, our phones were taken. The next day we had our screening tests, OIR and PPDT. I attempted all questions in the OIR, I wrote a very normal story for the PPDT and tried to put across valid points in the discussion. The results were announced and I was screened in! 40 candidates were screened in and I was given chest no. 03.
Next day we had TAT, where I wrote normal and positive stories; WAT, I wrote the first response that I came to my mind because that’s the only way I could complete all the words in time ; SRT, here also I wrote my natural reactions and completed all 60 SRTs in time; SD, I had prepared this well before hand and wrote it down. On the same day I had my interview as well which went on for about 50-55 minutes. The interview consisted questions about my family, education, extracurricular activities, sports, hobbies, friends, teachers, good and bad qualities, fears, adventures, current affairs and some technical questions. My advise to everyone would be to be natural and honest because if you lie you ‘re bound to get caught.
The next day we had our GT 1, group tasks are the most fun part of the SSB. We had all our tasks on the first day itself except the command task and the final group task. I participated well in the GDs , GPE and GOR. I gave a few workable ideas in the PGT and the HGT. In my lecturette I took the last topic and spoke on Distance Learning. In the individual obstacles I could only complete 4 obstacles in the given time.
On the second day, my command task went well, I was called as a Subordinate by 3 other people in my group. FGT went well too.
On the final day, the day of the conference we were all nervous. I wasn’t expecting anything, I thought whoever gets recommended I ll observe and learn what that person did to make the cut. I waited for around 10 minutes before my turn, I was asked a few questions about what I thought of my performance and who would I suggest for recommendation. And then they asked me who was a better choice I or the other person. I thought for a bit and I said her name and gave a reason for why I thought so.
After the conference , the results were announced and I was recommended! Alongwith 7 other people. That was the day that I actually believed that I had it in me to become a proud officer in the uniform! We stayed back for our medicals, I was given a TR for ECG abnormality but I was declared fit in my review.
Exactly after 10 days after I returned from Bangalore I had my AFCAT SSB at 4AFSB Varanasi. I did not have time to prepare anything extra this time. I went and gave all my tests with the same mindset. But this time I got Conferenced out. This was not entirely unexpected because I knew my performance in my GTs was not up to the mark and I could ‘ve done a lot better.
After being recommended once and conferenced out later my confidence had gone down a bit. But my aim was clear and I knew I had to work harder.
After my final exams, I got my SSB call up for Army SSCW TECH-20, in 21 SSB Bhopal on 14 June 17. I really wanted to make it this time as I had lost all hope to get in the merit list for Navy as many of my friends had recieved their joining letters and I had heard nothing.
I reported on 14th June at the railway station , a total of 100 candidates had reported , after the screening tests I was screened in and I was given chest no. 02. I gave my psychological tests with the same strategy, completed all TAT, WAT & SRT. I had my interview right after it. It started with the general questions but after that it was all about current affairs, history , civics, geography of the world and a lot of technical questions. I hardly knew anything. And my interview went on for 1 hour 45 minutes. I didn’t know what to expect.
The next day was GT 1, GD , GPE & GOR went very well , I gave my 200 per cent. In my PGT and HGT I gave a few workable ideas. This time also I took the easiest topic for the lecturette.
On GT 2, I did 7 obstacles, I was called as a subordinate by most of the people in my group. In my command task my GTO talked to me for about a good 10 minutes about my performance till now , previous attempts, education, family, my inspiration to join the Army and also about what I thought of my fellow group members. I was given a bomb to diffuse using three approaches. I was able to do it in time.
Current Affairs questions will be from last 5 months (for AFCAT, NDA, CDS, TA)
On the day of the conference I was very nervous and wasn’t expecting a positive outcome. My conference went for a little longer. When finally the results were announced the officer said that he would announce the results sequentially. And when he started he straightaway said chest no. 11 and announced the others who were recommended I knew I hadn’t made it. But then he closed the file and then announced chest no. 02. I couldn’t believe my ears, I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes! I called up my parents after 5 long days and gave them the good news and they told me that they had recieved my joining letter to join the INA in the morning itself. I couldn’t thank god enough for the day I was having!
We stayed back for our medicals and were given our phones. I was declared medically fit.
I came home on 26th of june. The merit for Army is expected to be declared in August.
I am now going to join the Indian Naval Academy on 10th July.
My each SSB experience was worth living to bits! I got to know my strengths and I learned from my mistakes which have eventually helped me to grow. With my family always by my side and my friends who covered for me when I missed college for all my SSBs, all of it became so much easier.

A Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter of the Indian Air Force (IAF) with three personnel on board went missing near Sagalee in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday. “The chopper was on a flood relief mission from Tezpur to Arunachal when it lost contact around 4 PM,” IAF sources said.
Efforts to locate the chopper are being hindered by inclement weather. Arunachal Pradesh has been battling severe floods caused by incessant rains and the raising Brahmaputra River.
“Weather is turbulent in North-East. I’m safe but whole State machinery is geared up to locate IAF ALH chopper missing almost at same time,” Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said on social media.
Just before the incident, the chopper he was travelling had made a preventive landing due to incessant rains.
Mr. Rijiju added that, Arunachal CM Pema Khandu and the State Government are mobilizing local people to locate the missing IAF helicopter.
Lately, women have shifted their centre of interest to defence services in incredible proportions. But that alone is not an adequate precondition to join in the services. There are certain physical standards those need to be addressed by the aspirants so as to avoid any risk of injuries during the training. And sculpting the upper body for developing strength is of utmost importance for women aspirants because women typically have a higher lower-to-upper-body strength ratio. This may cause to have a weak core and under performing muscles. This renders into under-expressed lower-body strength since your core is not accessible to translate lower-body strength into full-body movement.
Therefore, given below are few exercises which are considered significant for upper body strength.
1- The Push-Up
The pushup is primarily credited as the king of all upper body exercises. It’s because, this is the single upper body exercise that engages most of your upper body muscles groups, collectively, than any other upper body exercise. It is also responsible for an individual’s overall physical fitness. The pushup is chiefly designed to train the chest muscles (pectorals). But, it also employs the biceps, triceps, shoulders forearms, wrists, and core muscles. It also enhances the cardiovascular system of your body. Hence, doing a few sets of pushups a day is the fastest way to build your overall upper body strength. There is no right number of push-ups for a person to do, however, try increasing the number by one each day.
2 – The Triceps Push-Up
The triceps push up is an extension to the push-up. It targets all the major muscles groups of your upper body, essentially the arm, chest, shoulder and core muscles. However, what makes the triceps push up different from a regular pushup is the fact that by placing your hands closer together you put more emphasis and thrust on the triceps. This is a great exercise for strengthening the area in the back of the upper arms.
3- The Plank
The plank is one of the best and most effective exercises for your core because it builds isometric strength that sculpts your waistline and improves postures. There are many ways to do a plank but three of the plank variations would be more than required for the women aspirants, namely, the forearm plank which is usually considered as a standard plank, straight arm plank, and side plank. Plank exercises train abdominal muscles to be strong and these muscles provide support for your entire back and spinal column and in doing so, they play a pivotal role in preventing injuries.
4- The Chin Up or Pull Up
This is a challenging strength training exercise. When you want a functional, rigorous, and comprehensive exercise that targets most of the muscles in your upper body, the chin-up is your go-to because it engages the latissimus dorsi muscles of your back, and also involves a number of muscles in your arms, shoulders and chest, including your triceps, biceps and lower.
5- Side Crunches
Side crunches, also known as oblique crunches, is a functional ab exercise targeting oblique muscles. It is a core training exercise, that helps in improving your balance by strengthening your abdominal muscles. Strong core muscles improve your posture, that benefits your body in better functioning in sporting events and military training. The most significant benefit of this exercise is, it minimises strain on the neck and lower back.
6- Lower Back Extension
This exercise is the simplest of all body weight exercises and ideally effective for isolation, elongation and strengthening of the muscles of your lower back. It stabilises the muscles of the back and reduces the likelihood of injuries and ensures that the target muscles are being worked out. Since it’s a very simple exercise with effective measures, it must not be overlooked by the aspirants.
7- The Superman
This is another power-packed exercise that strengthens your upper and lower back muscles by isolating them as you lift your arms and legs off the floor. It builds the flexibility of the lower back muscles. This exercise also serves as a stretching exercise for your lower back muscles and the core muscles and relieves the tension and strain which often lead to lower back pain.
8- Dips
Dips are intense and effective isolation exercises that build and develop strength by targeting several layers of your upper-body muscle groups. They emphasise primarily on your triceps but also engage your forearms, shoulders, chest and lower back. Dips ensure that there is an even development of the muscles on your shoulders and back and also improves your lockout strength.
9- The Sit Up
This exercise boosts your overall torso health and strengthens underlying stabilising muscles. It works on your core and back muscles. It greatly helps to increase your flexibility and range of motion. This exercise is beneficial as it improves body posture and reduces the risk of getting a back strain or injury.
What? When? How?
Perform these exercises four to five days a week.
Warm up with 5 to 10 minutes of cardio, i.e. easy running, jogging, cycling and cool down with 5 to 10 minutes of easy stretching and jogging.
During your workout, always focus on breathing and good form, and body posture.
Drinks lots and lots of water and have a healthy diet.
Defence services in India are one of the most prestigious services which every young man and woman yearn to be recommended for. With women candidates applying for the armed forces in progressive measures, the service has certainly brought about a positive attitude in our society. A massive change in the mindset of the people came when Indian Air force inducted the first batch of women pilots into its fighter squadron.
Also, Indian Army will soon allow women in combat roles, breaking yet another gender barrier. Defence is not only strengthening the borders of our country but also acting as a great leveler. Women are no less active than their counterparts in being a part of the national heroic services and contributing their bit towards the nation.
And the indispensable qualities that every woman aspirant must possess or develop to be a part of the prestigious armed forces are:
Positive Thinking: The most necessary instinct not only to crack any exam but also to move forward in life as a winner is by being optimistic throughout. You transform into a motivational bag; inspiring while living because you know what it is to be out there fighting for not only your life but also for millions who might not even know you ever. When you step up and feel positive about what you are doing is for a greater good and for the soil all of us believe in. You take the best out of each situation because life is meant to live and grow rather than crib about it. It’s your attitude that is reflected throughout the tasks given to be performed and you increase your chances of being selected to serve your country.
Confidence: A great man said, “Confidence doesn’t make you successful but it does give you the power to face all challenges” and an officer exhales confidence while being humble at the same time. You have to believe in yourself that you are right for this service and today you can do what you aspire to, with a silent call in your mind. Confidence makes us do things; we believed we never had the capacity to do. So you should weave confidence inside you, it’s a trait which can’t be ignored.
Leadership: One who leads is never forgotten and when it comes to “Officer-like qualities” the ability to follow orders and lead, both are equally necessary. Following the chains of orders and being able to respond and reproduce them again in a different situation, is a rare quality. Leadership requires standing out in terms of qualities from others, being disciplined, having sharp skills and a great control over your emotions. Because you are the one who others will follow and all that goes wrong now goes in your bag and baggage. So better be aware and responsible about the same and become a true leader. Life gives chances to all to lead their fate but not all have the will to grab the fortune. What is certain is we all can for the least try to be leaders and develop such traits.
Fitness: Mental and physical fitness are of utmost importance for these services. Defence services are challenging and very demanding. Without being mentally fit, you can’t survive the training because it requires all of your enduring capacity. And mental fitness refers to being stable and patient in all situations and having a winner spirit. In totality, an officer is a warrior dressed with sagely patience and wisdom in battlefield and day to day tasks. And women aspirants must have this idea in their minds beforehand that the training won’t be easy, only then can they pull themselves through.
Easy Adaptability: All the aspirants need to be in full frame of healthy mind to easily adapt to all situations at any moment of time. You should be ready for surprises and thrill and try to intake them as a natural part of your services. You never know what awaits you; moreover, you can’t be fragile rather stay active and tough by all means to live a life of a soldier.
Good luck!

A Military court has stopped the Indian Air Force (IAF) from releasing a lady officer from service over health issues, including being overweight, while asking the force to wait for her medical test results before any action.
The lady officer of the rank of squadron leader is posted at Sirsa airbase in Haryana and has completed 10 years in the IAF as a short service commission officer and had sought a further extension of four years.
In a plea filed before the Armed Forces Tribunal here, the lady officer had contended that “she has been denied extension of short service commission for four years on account of her not meeting the requisite medical category”. She had said that the reason for denial was because she was “found to be overweight as well as suffering from hypothyroidism” and was suppose to be released on June 15.
The officer claimed that despite her requests, IAF authorities decided to hold her medical review only after June 15 – the day of her release from service. However, IAF authorities did not accept her plea to hold her review before June 15 as she wanted to have a medical report with her before she was to quit service. As per schedule, her review date was July 1. The officer had approached the court to quash the orders dated by virtue of which she was being released on account of non-extension of her short service commission.
The IAF opposed the plea saying she had been informed way back in February 2015 that she was not maintaining her medical parameters. “Despite sufficient time being given to the applicant, she did not bring her health condition within permissible parameters as a consequence of which, there was no alternative but to deny her benefit of extension of service as well as her release from the service,” the IAF said.
The AFT bench headed by Justice VK Shali said, “There is no justification of discharging the applicant till the report (of the medical board) comes.”
