Specialities of Indian Defence Officer

It’s the dream of every youth to have that uniform on the body, those shining stars/ rings or strips on the shoulder, those awards and medals on the chest. They are always pride for an individual. The culture that you belong to once you are an officer, the style of living, or whatever it’s totally different from the civilian culture we are part of now. Time becomes more precious and motherland the most. Their priority changes and they see things differently. Now you will be thinking that do they have all this from the very beginning.

The answer is a big NO … these things they learn as a part of stringent training that they undergo after being recommended for the defence forces. But yes one thing is very much true that they have the spark to do something in life, they have a bit of each and every quality that is present in a officer which is later developed fully through training.

I had read somewhere that an officer must have the following ability:

An officer should be able to

  • Order from a French menu
  • Climb a mountain face
  • Enjoy a ballet
  • Balance accounts
  • Role a kayak
  • Embolden a friend
  • Tell a joke
  • Laugh at himself
  • Cooperate
  • Act alone
  • Sing a children song
  • Solve equation
  • Throw a dog a stick
  • Pitch manure
  • Program a computer

  • Fight efficiently and
  • Die gallantry

Specialization is for insects ~~ Lewis E Hitchner The above lines speak the ability that an officer must have and Lewis defines it clearly. They should be perfect in whatever they do because specialisation is just for insects. I hope you get the jest of what an officer means for the nation. They are formed of stone and share the ability to survive in every condition, they are made to learn how to strive for excellence and die for their motherland. They are perfect and are adaptable to every condition. That’s why SSB is designed such, that judges your qualities and then only makes you move ahead to get the title of an officer with that shining uniform, stars and medals on the chest.
