Set against the backdrop of China’s assertiveness in the region, the Milan exercises will witness an armada of 50 navies converging in the strategically vital Bay of Bengal, sending a resolute message of unity and cooperation in safeguarding maritime security and upholding the rules-based international order.

Headlining the exercises will be the Indian Navy’s formidable twin aircraft carriers, INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant, alongside foreign submarines, demonstrating India’s naval prowess and readiness to counter emerging challenges in the maritime domain.

Scheduled from February 19 to 27, the exercises will feature extensive participation from Quad countries—the US, Japan, and Australia—alongside navies from Southeast Asian nations, emphasizing collective resolve in maintaining regional stability.

Milan Drill 2

“The sea phase of the naval exercise will involve large-force maneuvers, advanced air defence operations, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-surface operations,” revealed a naval official, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the drills. As the 12th edition of the Milan exercises, this year’s iteration promises to be the largest yet, fostering greater interoperability and cooperation among participating navies.

Complementing the operational exercises, the ‘Harbour phase’ will feature a diverse array of engagements, including an International Maritime Seminar, International City Parade, Maritime Tech Exhibition, and various sporting events.

With participation expected from an array of nations, including the US, Japan, Australia, France, Bangladesh, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia, the exercises aim to strengthen regional maritime cooperation and reaffirm commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.

Against the backdrop of China’s growing assertiveness, the Milan exercises assume heightened significance, providing a platform for regional navies to coordinate efforts and enhance maritime security.

China’s increasing muscle-flexing in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the East and South China Seas, has spurred concerns among regional stakeholders, necessitating concerted efforts to uphold peace and stability.

Milan Drill 3

India’s proactive engagement with Southeast Asian nations and its deepening cooperation with Quad partners underscore its commitment to promoting regional security and prosperity. Beyond showcasing military strength, the Milan drills serve as a vital platform for diplomatic outreach, facilitating engagement with key stakeholders across the globe.

As tensions simmer in the Indo-Pacific, the Milan exercises offer a beacon of hope for regional cooperation and unity, signalling a collective resolve to counter emerging security challenges and uphold the principles of a rules-based international order.

In the face of China’s increasing aggression, India and its allies stand united, poised to safeguard the shared interests and values that underpin regional stability and prosperity.
