Naib Subedar Singh, who was on leave at the time of the incident, became the target of unidentified assailants leading to immediate action by the military forces to secure his release.

The rescue operation highlights the Indian Army’s commitment to the safety and security of its personnel, demonstrating its capability to respond promptly in critical situations. The circumstances surrounding the abduction, including the motive and identity of the kidnappers, remain under investigation.

The Manipur Police are actively investigating the case to unravel the details of the abduction and to bring those responsible to justice. This incident has drawn significant attention, emphasizing the challenges faced by security personnel even while off duty in conflict-prone areas.

The simmering unrest in Manipur has escalated yet again with the reported abduction of an Indian Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), Konsam Kheda Singh, marking the fourth such incident since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023.

The brazen kidnapping, allegedly carried out by anti-social elements, has sent shockwaves across the region, underscoring the precarious security situation prevailing in the state.

According to officials, the abduction occurred on Friday at 9 am when unidentified individuals barged into the home of JCO Konsam Kheda Singh, a resident of Charangpat Mamang Leikai in Manipur’s Thoubal district. The assailants, armed and masked, forcibly abducted the JCO, who was on leave at the time, and fled the scene in a vehicle.

While the motive behind the abduction remains unclear, initial reports suggest that it may be linked to extortion, as the family of the abducted officer had reportedly received threats in the past. The incident has prompted a swift and coordinated response from security agencies, who have launched a massive search operation to locate and rescue the abducted JCO.

Security personnel have intensified checks on vehicles plying National Highway 102 in Manipur, as part of efforts to track down the perpetrators and secure the safe release of JCO Konsam Kheda Singh. However, as of now, the cause of the abduction and the whereabouts of the officer remain unknown, leaving his family and colleagues in anguish and uncertainty.

This latest incident adds to a series of abductions targeting soldiers and their relatives since the outbreak of violence in Manipur.

In September 2023, former Assam Regiment soldier Serto Thangthang Kom was kidnapped and subsequently killed by an unidentified armed group, highlighting the grave risks faced by military personnel and their families in the conflict-ridden region.

In another tragic incident, four individuals, including family members of an Indian Army soldier serving in Jammu and Kashmir, were abducted and killed while traveling from Churachandpur to Leimakhong.

The sole survivor, the father of the soldier, managed to escape and was airlifted for medical treatment, underscoring the brutality of the attacks perpetrated by inimical elements.

The security situation in Manipur took another grim turn when an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) was attacked in his home by members of the radical Meitei group Arambai Tenggol (AT). The brazen assault on law enforcement officials further underscores the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining law and order in the volatile region.

In response to the escalating violence and lawlessness, Manipur Police issued a stern warning to miscreants, attributing the recent spate of attacks to the notorious group AT.

The police statement also hinted at the possibility of reimposing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the valley if conditions deteriorate further, underscoring the gravity of the security situation in Manipur.

As the search for JCO Konsam Kheda Singh continues, the abduction serves as a grim reminder of the persistent threats faced by military personnel and civilians alike in Manipur. The incident highlights the urgent need for concerted efforts to restore peace and stability in the region and to safeguard the lives and liberties of its residents.
