In a substantial anti-narcotics operation, Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Special Narcotics Police Station and CID (Crime) of Mizoram, has successfully seized 20,000 methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately Rs 6.66 crores. The drugs, weighing a total of 1.908 kg, were confiscated on April 27, 2024, in the General Area Mualpuikawn, Salem Veng K-Section, Aizawl, Mizoram, where one suspect was also apprehended.
This operation is a part of Assam Rifles’ broader strategy to combat drug abuse and trafficking in India’s northeastern states. Over the past four years, Assam Rifles has made significant drug seizures totaling over ₹4,200 crore, with noteworthy captures each year from 2020 to 2023.
Moreover, Assam Rifles has actively engaged in numerous anti-drug awareness campaigns, particularly targeting the youth in states like Nagaland and Mizoram. These initiatives often see collaborations with local authorities, community organizations, and prominent local figures such as Miss Nagaland 2022, Hikali Achumi. The campaigns focus on educating the public about the perils of drug abuse and the importance of healthy lifestyle choices.
The challenges posed by the porous Indo-Myanmar border, which facilitates the illicit flow of drugs from the Golden Triangle, are a significant concern. Assam Rifiles’ efforts in raising awareness, coupled with its enforcement actions, underscore the critical role the force plays in both community engagement and in disrupting the drug trafficking networks that plague the region.
