He was warmly welcomed with the customary Guard of Honour presented by the Indian Navy at the South Block, New Delhi, underscoring the significance of the visit in strengthening the longstanding ties between India and Australia.

Scheduled from April 2 to April 6, 2024, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond’s itinerary includes meetings with key dignitaries such as the Chief of Defense, Chief of the Air Staff, and Defense Secretary at New Delhi.

His visit also encompasses interactions with the leadership of the Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command in Kochi and the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, where he will engage with the respective Commanders-in-Chief and visit key naval installations.

At the Southern Naval Command in Kochi and the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond will have the opportunity to gain insights into the operational capabilities and readiness of the Indian Navy.

He is scheduled to visit prominent naval assets such as INS Vikrant, the Druv Simulator, and facilities managed by Naval Dockyard, Mumbai (ND(Mbi)) and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).

The visit of Vice Admiral Mark Hammond assumes added significance against the backdrop of India and Australia’s shared perspectives on contemporary maritime security issues in the Indo-Pacific region.

Both countries have been actively collaborating in various bilateral and multilateral fora, including the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS), ASEAN Defense Minister’s Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus), and the QUAD.

Furthermore, the visit comes on the heels of the successful participation of the Royal Australian Ship HMNAS Warramunga during MILAN 24 and recently conducted maritime exercises, underscoring the deepening cooperation and interoperability between the two navies.

Vice Admiral Mark Hammond’s visit serves to further consolidate the strong and enduring bilateral relations between India and Australia, reaffirming their commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The engagements between the naval leadership of India and Australia not only underscore the importance of maritime cooperation but also reflect the shared commitment of both countries to fostering a rules-based maritime order and upholding the principles of freedom of navigation and respect for international law.

As maritime challenges continue to evolve, the partnership between the Indian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy is poised to play a pivotal role in addressing shared security concerns and promoting regional prosperity and stability.
