Anticipated to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by May 25, 2024, โ€˜Remalโ€™ poses a significant threat as it sets its course towards the North/North-West Bay of Bengal, with projections indicating a likely landfall near the West Bengal Coast on the intervening night of May 26 and 27.

In response to the looming cyclonic threat, the Indian Coast Guard has initiated coordinated efforts with concerned state administrations and stakeholders to facilitate a synchronized response to potential contingencies arising from the impending storm.

With a focus on proactive preparedness and rapid response, the ICG has disseminated pertinent information regarding the evolving situation to all stakeholders, aiming to enhance readiness and ensure effective coordination of actions.

At the forefront of the ICGโ€™s proactive approach are its Remote Operating Stations located at Haldia and Paradip, which have been broadcasting regular and multilingual Very High Frequency alerts, cautioning transit merchant mariners to take necessary precautions and navigate safely amidst the impending cyclonic conditions.

Furthermore, ICG ships and aircraft have been deployed along the projected path of the cyclonic storm, conducting surveillance and reconnaissance operations to provide timely assistance and support to mariners in distress.

In readiness for potential emergencies, nine disaster relief teams have been strategically positioned at key locations, including Haldia, Paradip, Gopalpur, and Frazerganj, poised to spring into action and provide immediate assistance in the event of any maritime mishap or humanitarian crisis triggered by the cyclonic disturbance.

Recognizing the importance of regional cooperation and collective action in confronting natural calamities, the Indian Coast Guard has also notified the Bangladesh Coast Guard authorities, urging them to undertake necessary preparations and disseminate alerts to fishermen and merchant marine vessels operating in the affected regions.

Concurrently, merchant vessels at anchorages have been duly alerted, with respective port authorities advised to implement appropriate safety measures and protocols.

Despite the prevailing fishing ban, the Fisheries Department has been cautioned to remain vigilant and promptly inform country boats in their respective areas about the evolving cyclonic situation, emphasizing the paramount importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of fishermen and seafarers amidst the impending cyclonic threat.

As Cyclonic Storm โ€˜Remalโ€™ continues its trajectory towards the Indian coastline, the Indian Coast Guard remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding maritime interests and ensuring the resilience of coastal communities against the vagaries of nature.

Through proactive preparedness, timely interventions, and effective coordination, the ICG stands poised to mitigate the impact of the cyclonic disturbance and uphold its mandate of protecting life and property at sea.
