The Bihar Regiment has mourned the passing of Lieutenant Colonel Rajat Kumar Tripathy, a veteran Army officer who served the nation for more than 26 years. Lt Col Tripathy passed away on September 9, 2026, at the age of 48.
Born on August 6, 1978, Lt Col Tripathy was commissioned into 5 BIHAR on June 24, 2000. During his military career, he served with distinction across multiple operational areas and held a variety of important appointments.
Lt Col Tripathy also served at the Bihar Regimental Centre in Danapur and at MINTSD, Pune, as an instructor, contributing to the training and professional development of fellow personnel.
His service also took him overseas. In 2005, he was deployed with 10 BIHAR as part of the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC), representing the Indian Army during an international peacekeeping assignment.
At the time of his demise, Lt Col Tripathy was serving as the Joint Director of the Regional Centre, Chennai, under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS).
Remembering him as a “dedicated soldier” and an “inspiring leader,” the Bihar Regimental fraternity said that Lt Col Tripathy embodied the highest traditions of the Indian Army throughout his career.
The regiment extended its heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family. Lt Col Tripathy is survived by his wife and son.
His passing has left the Bihar Regiment fraternity mourning the loss of an officer who devoted more than two and a half decades of his life to military service, including operational, instructional, peacekeeping and ex-servicemen welfare assignments.
