IIT Kanpur Unveils Revolutionary EM Wave-Absorbing System for Advanced Stealth Technology

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has unveiled an innovative electromagnetic (EM) wave-absorbing system that marks a significant advancement in stealth technology. The Anālakṣhya Metamaterial Surface Cloaking System is touted to offer what the university describes as “near-perfect” EM wave absorption across a wide range of frequencies. This technological breakthrough is expected to enhance military capabilities significantly by employing metamaterials—synthetic materials engineered to absorb or redirect EM waves, effectively rendering objects less detectable.

The introduction of this system promises to bolster the defense against radar-guided weapons. Typically, radars emit radio or microwave signals that reflect off objects, revealing their presence. The new cloaking system enhances the user’s ability to counter Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, thus providing improved shielding from radar-guided missiles. Furthermore, it features an adaptive cloaking capability, which allows it to respond dynamically to various radar frequencies—an essential attribute for modern military operations.

In addition to its advanced technological features, the system is designed with a lightweight and scalable framework, facilitating easy integration into multiple military platforms, including fighter jets, naval vessels, drones, and military installations. The IIT Kanpur emphasized that this cutting-edge innovation is tailored for the demands of contemporary warfare, offering the Indian armed forces advanced tools necessary to maintain strategic superiority and ensure national security.

The Anālakṣhya system has undergone extensive testing since 2019 in various conditions, and impressively, over 90 percent of its materials have been sourced locally. The Indian firm Meta Tattva Systems has been licensed for the production and deployment of this system, which is set to be acquired by the Indian Armed Forces.

Military officials highlighted the significance of this development. Indian Air Force Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit referred to the technology as a revolutionary leap forward in addressing the multifaceted challenges of modern military engagements, noting the increasing complexity of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems. Air Marshal Rajesh Kumar echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that this launch represents a critical milestone in enhancing operational effectiveness on contemporary battlefields, where transparent battlefield conditions can hinder military operations.

Overall, the introduction of the Anālakṣhya Metamaterial Surface Cloaking System heralds a new era in stealth technology, with substantial implications for the future of military strategy and operations in India.
